The biggest luxury for me is being debt free. Life is about making choices and I choose not to take on consumer debt, particularly for luxuries.
I much prefer to drive or own something that is older or less glamorous in exchange for being debt free.
It really feels different.. at least to me.
USPS money orders can be verified and cashed on the spot at many post offices. Yes, it’s an extra step, but may be worth it if there’s a question.
Helping someone who is motivated and a self starter is fun. In the end you’ll learn a lot from her as she gets more involved.
I’ve met so many people, who say they want to earn more income and learn how to sell. In the end they aren’t willing to do the work or find it over whelming and quit.
Helping your cousin is a nice thing to do.. Good for you.
“kids younger than us (i turn 40 this year) are going to be a generation where college and home ownership might be 100% unattainable because of cost. is that the country we want? i don’t”
Yes, we really sold a generation of our youth a real bill of goods. Congress passed a law giving the lending institutions unprecedented power to collect student loan debt. Then we convinced anyone that would listen that the “ONLY” path to financial success in America was through a college education.
Over time, the colleges took advantage of this new found access to money and raised the cost of education to the moon.
The result is crippling student loan debt. I’m guessing this has hurt more people than it is helping.
The “Sink or Swim” mentality has it’s merits, but do we really want to have our kids in six figure debt, before they are old enough to buy cigarettes? Do we believe, they have the maturity to make these life changing decisions at such a young age. If we aren’t careful, we may end up with a generation of indentured servants.
“We’ve listened to seller feedback and are making changes directly in response.”
I love this phrase… newspeak right out of 1984, by Orwell.
Hi Linda,
I just moved from Long Beach to the High desert. The real estate prices are way way cheaper here and you actually get land.
I changed my handling time to 15 business days and left it there for months. Yes, my sales slowed, but my store never closed and there was no stress regarding shipping.
It’s not just retrieving the items that’s an issue, you’ve also got to ship them. You need access to all your shipping supplies. as well as your printer etc. Most items shipped out in far less than 15 days, but again, I didn’t stress about shipping at all.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the difference in postage. When you consider your other expenses you’ll be having,, the difference in postage won’t even show up on the radar.
Yes, purge the bulky stuff and keep your eye on the big picture. The most important thing is that you make the move as successful as possible.
When I moved about 125 miles away, I rented a storage unit and basically moved everything I wanted to keep in it. I changed my handling time to 15 days and stopped listing and sourcing. I prepared my house for sale and eventually sold it. I them found a great deal on a newer house with land in the new area and started moving in. I had to outfit a storage building (trailer) and set up a shelving system and shipping station in the garage. After all that I finally moved my handling time from 15 days back to 3 days.
Sure, I lost a lot of sales, but the move went really well. My new home was about 1/3 the cost of the house I sold
If you do decide to move cross country, set up a new mailing address ahead of time and notify everyone. I waited too long and it ended up stressing me out. You’ll also need to set up forwarding of your mail with the post office. I also ended up going paperless with most of my bills.
Toward the end of the move-out, I was purging like mad. You cannot begin this soon enough. Sell it, trash it or donate it. I cannot imagine the hassle and cost of moving a car collection and all the associated tools etc.
Have you contacted a realtor yet. I would recommend doing it sooner than later. The house will need to be as empty and clean as possible to get the best price.
I’m happy to answer any questions you may have.
Good Luck
In the area I currently live in, its fairly common to purchase a retired steel shipping container for about $3000 and use it for storage. They are really tough and weather tight.
Typically they are 40 feet long by 8 feet wide and about 9 feet tall.
Many people also have them modified into workshops with electricity and extra doors.
I wouldn’t have any reservations accepting a USPS money order. You can cash them at just about any Post Office. Just tell the buyer, you won’t send the item. until payment clears.
I ended up getting the same deal on the same day at Home Depot. The only place I saw it advertised was on the internet and they wouldn’t show the price until that day.
They didn’t even have the sale price marked in the store, but when I got to the register is rang up.
Thanks again for the heads up Andrea..
if you go to the page for your business policies, you should be able to edit each one.
The easiest way to find the page is to go to account and it should show up in the drop down menu.
Are you missing the option to edit?
Check your seller dashboard.. if you don’t see a link, click on your feedback and you should see a link there.
With a Flat Rate Padded Envelope, you need to change the setting to USPS packaging to get the option, even if it’s already in the listing and was paid for.
I also noticed they specifically said Media Mail is not an option for my listing. Hopefully this won’t become a problem on listings in which the customer pays for Media Mail.
Life is interesting..
04/10/2019 at 6:37 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Vintage TV trays, Quack medical device, books, Tension pole lamp #60009Wow, too bad about the radio arriving broken.. I’d heard stories about Global shipping items getting repacked in the past, but I thought that was a practice that had been stopped.
I can’t imagine someone would complain about your packing Steve. My guess is that it was repacked.
At least Ebay took care of you,, but it’s still a bummer.
Great video as always..
Keep them both.
You’ve already taken the major portion of depreciation due to the age.
Also it sounds like you’ve had them for a while and you know the history and maintenance. This adds value that only you can realize.
Not having a backup car leave you very vulnerable in the event that one of them goes down.
Two Hondas.. if you do decide to sell one, it will go quick, but I think you’d regret it.
Good Luck.
04/10/2019 at 4:08 pm in reply to: New eBay shipping page–can't use printer setting to shrink label #59988I went to the new page and wasn’t given the shipping option for flat rate padded envelope, which is what the customer paid for.
The only way to get this option was to switch to USPS packaging and then it came up.
Adding another step to the process.. just what I needed.
