For better or worse, tomorrow is Spring Seller Update Day Wenig tweeted: “we promised among other things this year enhanced seller protections and tools to be successful on our marketplace. Step 1 of a multi-part plan comes this week with the Spring SR. We’ve listened to seller feedback and are making changes directly in response. More Tuesday..”

I bet a lot of this update (the “multi-part plan”) will be focused on Managed Payments.
My dream change would be removing return reasons under free returns and/or revising service metrics to include an intermediary step between the 3 and 12 month tier.

“We’ve listened to seller feedback and are making changes directly in response.”
I love this phrase… newspeak right out of 1984, by Orwell.

I was sent a seller survey a while back from ebay. I am assuming this is the feedback they are referencing.
Their inability to handle cases in a logical and consistent way and the constant lying and lack of transparent documentation of Customer service cases has GOT to be fixed. They’ve done permanent harm to my seller relationship to ebay. If they fixed this one thing, so many other issues would resolve themselves organically!
I pointed out the hypocracy of their “in alignment with industry standards BS” when their systems are nothing like their counterparts. Even amazon provides detailed email summaries of all Customer service cases.
Needless to say, I’m not exactly looking forward to the update with optimism.

There is no reason for non store sellers to have access to promoted listings. It is a pure cash grab and that is bull shit.

Sellers: We hate the returns system.
eBay: We hear you. Now there’s a button that allows you easily relist an item after the return closes.
Sellers: That’s not wha-
eBay: We raised FVFs.
Everything else just feels like a repeat of info we already had: PayPal coming to MP, volume discounts, forced GTC, etc. The “enhanced seller protections” also seems like a rundown of the existing rules with some easier access to buyer reporting. The only interesting bit is a reference to a future update that would help you fight bad feedback based on your track record.
Overall just a whole lot of nothing IMO.

IndySales – your “we raised FVF” comment made my day. I actually lol’d.

I’m with Julie B. I count it as a pretty big nothing burger when the section that will probably impact me the most is the section about changes to categories and item specifics. Granted, I only did one quick read through, and I might have missed something, but most of this just doesn’t mean much to me. Things I was hoping to see, such as coded coupons and employee limited access to accounts, are not there…no changes to store layouts, no additional store tiers….

I was a bit surprised that NJ is now requiring online sites to collect sales tax. I’m not surprised that NJ opted to do this as my state will do anything to collect more taxes, but I just didn’t know that this was going to happen. And the effective start date is … tomorrow!
I’ve been collecting taxes for in-state purchases by setting it up in my account preferences. Does anyone know if I need to do anything tomorrow to turn that off, or will eBay do that for me?
Maybe someone from Washington or one of the other states that have already opted in will know the answer.

Well, thankfully nothing dramatic. The fee increase stinks, but I’ve never sold anything that comes close to reaching the fee limit so it doesn’t personally affect me. It will definitely hurt others though.
The use of calendar dates for relisting will also help some people who use that as part of their selling methods and accounting, but again, it doesn’t really impact me that much.
The ability to refund a percentage of the sales price after a return is a nice addition. I’ve never been in a situation to offer a partial refund before, but I can foresee instances where that would be helpful. I’m a little confused if that option will only be available to sellers utilizing free returns as it’s mentioned once specifically with free returns and again with no mention. Most of my items are buyer pays returns and partial refunds would be helpful in a case where I may not want the item back and I could simply work with the buyer to refund them the sales price minus what they would pay to ship the item back. They’d end up the same financially, and I wouldn’t have the hassle of relisting and reselling.
All in all, looks like nothing major for at least the next few months. Here’s to looking forward to the fall update.
