for some reason, “OfferUp” keeps auto-correcting and making it “offer”. I meant “OfferUp”.
debitsandcredits, I too am guilty of the death piles. I, as always have a lot going on. I stopped sourcing since the pandemic and not a moment too soon. I have so much stuff to list and this pandemic has sort of “helped” me realize I need to just list. All that being said, I simply have not had time to though.
As for the print you have, can you try selling it on craigslist, or offer-thus saving you any fees, and maybe throw in the the listing description as something for a restorer to practice on? Idk. Just a thought-maybe a silly one, but maybe just trying one of those 2 places to sell might save you the stress of thinking of the fees involved.
I typically use craigslist or offer (with success) for selling things I don’t want to/or can’t ship. I have small furniture items, or just smaller items not really worth selling on ebay due to the time/weight/fees involved.
And then there’s the “prop” section of ebay someone (sorry, I cannot remember who) mentioned and I keep bringing up because “why didn’t I think of that” keeps running through my mind when I think of the props idea.
Not sure I understood the article correctly. Here is my question. I sell on Etsy. I involuntarily get charged 15% of my sale through Etsy for Google Ads to bring me a buyer. So, I’m not paying to “list” the item on Google, but I am being charged once a sale is made-as long as up to 30 days from when the ad was clicked on, leading to the sale.
The article does not state if Google charges you for the sale made, as a result of the “free” listing. And let’s say that Google does not charge you-why then am I paying Etsy 15% of my sale made through the Google Ad? Shouldn’t that be up to me to choose (or not) to list the item myself? Or is the Google Ad listing only free if you place the listing directly yourself? Or, is “Google Shopping” different from “Google Ads” and could that be the problem? I have no idea.
So sorry to hear of your medical woes. Adding insult to injury, comes the cost of meds. While I assume everyone knows about this, I still feel the need to share. I found out about GoodRx from another podcaster years ago. Thankfully, I don’t take any meds, but at the time, my mom was spending hundreds of dollars a month on hers. I was able to take advantage of GoodRx for my mom and can I just say, it has been a blessing. GoodRx (in case anyone out there still does not know) is a discount for meds. No membership required just go online and sign up and Bob’s your uncle. I liken this program to “I’ve got a guy…” You just look up the meds you need on the site and all of the pharmacies offering that medication pop up. There are virtual coupons and you choose what pharmacy you want to buy your meds. On just 1 med, my mom was saving literally hundreds of dollars. Be well and stay safe, everyone!
debitsandcredits, Ha! That is hilarious-penicillin + kidneys. You are absolutely correct.
A follow up to a follow up. So. This buyer who was questioning my price on the fabric.
The buyer again asked me about why my price was so high. I had to take the opportunity to ask her why she sold her shoes for $150., when I could pay $60. for those very shoes. In response, she sent me an apology, stating that she did not mean to offend me. Ok. I did not reply. Didn’t know what to say, and moved on with my life. The next day (day 3) I get a sale totaling $99.65. Great! I grab the items and go to make a label, when I see that it’s for this buyer who keeps questioning my prices. I gladly wrap up her items and take to the post office. Today, I decided to take a look at my sellers dashboard and see that I was charged $14.95 in Etsy “Ad Fees”. Not a mathematician, but that is 15% of my sale-before I pay Etsy, PayPal, taxes, COG and my time. Omg. I just did the math on my “profit” and before taxes and my time, I am at $59.39 on a $99.65 sale. Honestly, I felt kinda bad for charging her what I did and thought about refunding her a tad just to give her a “re-seller’s discount”, but now, I just feel justified
06/25/2020 at 11:56 pm in reply to: Gains from selling online (besides $$$)/ Offsetting corporate job downsides #78763Yep. Location, location, location. I have a niece who lives in Culebra, a tiny island off of Puerto Rico. I went to visit her about 8 years ago and asked her to take me to a thrift store or resale shop. She gave me a glazed look. Puzzled, I asked her “What? What’s wrong?” She told me there aren’t that many on the main island, (and there are “none” on the island of Culebra), so she had to think of where to take me. We found one on the main island. It was just closing as we drove up, so I never got to go.
Anyhow, my niece told me that thrifting is not really big in Puerto Rico. I have another niece that lives in the Dominican Republic. Now there, you can have a dress made for $20.and a pair of shoes repaired for $2. At those prices, Who “needs” vintage?
Here in Chicago, thrifting opportunities are abundant.I have 2 thrift stores walking distance from me. Both are on the same street and one is a block away from me. The other is about 3 blocks north of that one. Also, I live next door to an apartment building. People move in/out pretty much every month. As I was throwing out trash, a tenant was moving out and placed a framed print on the ground face down. I walked up to the tenant and asked him if he was throwing the frame (I didn’t know what was on the other side of the frame). The tenant asked me if I wanted it, I could take it. So I did. Then on Monday, someone threw out nice bed rails with casters (I did not take them) and I have gotten countless really nice furniture items and household items that I could sell-but I’ve kept a lot of it.
I took a looksee at your link. Maybe use the keyword “movie prop”? Since someone (sorry, I can’t remember who) posted about the movie props that sell on ebay. Good luck!
All this talk about magazines. I still have them sitting in my car. Keep forgetting to stop at a donation box. However-I wanted to pass this thought through the forum. I have been on a puppet making frenzy. I was on ebay looking for any “interesting” patterns. I have absolutely no business doing this, has I have many “adult” things to do such as clean the garage, organize, sort and list. Anyhow. As I clicked through a few “solds” and newer puppet patterns on ebay, I noticed someone was selling a pattern that they cut out of a magazine (and disclosed that they did) on ebay. I wouldn’t mind do that if I could. I wouldn’t have to keep the entire magazine, and I can easily store in a smaller space. Is that “legal” to do? I wouldn’t want to get in any trouble. Just a thought. I know I have looked for quilting or sewing patterns and I would (if I found it) buy a pattern cut out from a magazine, but not sure it’s acceptable to do. Has anyone done this?
A follow up to my original post. So when the original message came to me, I had a lot going on. I was curious, but today I acted on my curiosity. I always wonder when someone questions my “why”. I always feel that the person doing the questioning is either the competition, or just mad because they did not think of it. Anyhow. I decided to see if the potential buyer had a shop. She does. I sell fabric on Etsy. The potential buyer sells new, name brand shoes she “decorates” with fabric. Anyhow. She is selling her shoes for $150. a pair. Tempted to ask her “why” her shoes are so expensive. As Rosanne Rosannadanna would say. “It’s always something.” At least now I know.
I used to sell exclusively on Etsy for a time. I honestly don’t know which is better in terms of fees. Etsy keeps changing things, and I stopped trying to keep up. I will tell you of a recent experience though. I sold an item for $14.95 last week. I had just listed said item a few days prior. Okay great! Or so I thought.
Here’s what happened. The next day I get a prompt on my Etsy Sellers Dashboard. The message was letting me know that said item was sold through Etsy Ads. Huh? I didn’t sign up for any “ads”. Long story short…The item sold for $14.95. Because the item sold through Etsy Ads, I was being charged $2.69 as a fee for the ad that I did not ask to be part of. Then there is a listing fee. I say .80 cents, because there is a minimum of 4 months x .20 cents, so that is .80 cents. There is a multi-listing fee of .20 cents, then there is the percentage Etsy takes, the percentage you pay PayPal, and then your taxes. How much have I “profited”? Is it worth it? These are the things about Etsy which make it difficult to sell on Etsy. AND Etsy wants you to offer “free” shipping? No. Not after all of those fees. I did not offer free shipping on that particular item. If I had, I really would not even bother with Etsy. I would just sell on ebay and call it done.
I did receive a “So, how did you like selling through our ads?” type of question. I was quick to reply that I did not sign up for it, did not like it, and asked to be removed. Here’s the kicker. If you sold $10,000. or more on Etsy in a year’s time, you do NOT have the option to opt out of the Etsy Ads promotion! Oy!
Looking forward to checking out some of these podcasts. I always look for Jay and Ryanne’s email to hear the SL podcast. For some reason, when I hear their podcast, I almost have it recorded in my brain. I love Jay and Ryanne’s laughter-it makes me laugh more. But the content is always very interesting and pertinent. HOW Jay is so so equitable really blows my mind. I truly think listening to Jay’s rationale has helped me as an online seller. Not to mention, I am only able to have been on ebay for the time I have “because” I have listened to SL! Both Jay and Ryanne’s tips have convinced me to stay on ebay. Thanks, Jay and Ryanne!
But I am a multi-multi-tasker. Two weeks ago, my brother called me. As we were talking he asked me how ebay was going and I told him “good”, then went into a few brief scenarios. My brother then said, “well, I should let you go so you can list.” I responded “List? I am listing! and I”m watching the news.” I don’t think I have ever not been a multitasker. sigh.
As for podcasts I like, I like Scavenger Life-duh and sewing/fashion related podcasts. I listen to “Dressed”, “Sewing Out Loud” and my favorite “All Grown Up Now”. The latter being short stories about the experiences of a New York based, gay, fashion instructor from Oklahoma. If you are bothered by strong language-this may not be the podcast for you.
Antique Frog, Right? I was truly mesmerized by this whole miniature crime scene recreation doll house thing. Sometimes when you think a thing is “gory” enough, you are fascinated by it. And by gory, I think I actually mean “Gorey”. As in Edward Gorey.
Not really a “death pile” item per se, but I did have a lot of 20 sweaters I used to wear when I worked a full-time job. Was wanting to put in the donation bin, but on a fluke, just decided to list and at least get half (before fees and all is said and done) of what I paid for them. It worked! I sold most sweaters and while I probably just profited $5. from each sale. It was a win for me, because I was glad to rid myself of them and came out with about $100. I’ll take it!
The only thing on my “wish list”. I ‘wish” I could sell all the crap I have!
