My last three months has been crazy and if not for our emergency fund things would have been much worse. I started getting sick in January with odd new symptoms appearing almost weekly it seemed. Then the Covid shelter in place orders hit which caused us to close our antique store, auction house and thrift store temporarily since we aren’t allowed to have customers congregate there. 10 days ago the Dr’s finally figured out what was wrong with me and I had emergency brain tumor removal. Luckily the surgery went as well as it could have in every way and I was back home in a couple of days. Also Ebay sales have remained very strong during the Covid situation and I feel as long as I can keep listing eBay alone should be able to support our businesses until the shelter in place in lifted. I guess I just wanted to tell people build up that emergency fund, this has been a real eye-opener how quickly things can go wrong. I hope everyone else is getting by ok during all this.

Best wishes to you and glad you are doing well. The Emergency fund is critical to any business owner of any size, and any family of just about any size (even the very rich)!

The brain tumor is horrible news, but it was great it was removed with no complication. Amazing.
Yes, having an emergency fund makes me sleep well at night. Six months is our goal.

@trunkfullofjunk, I am wishing you a speedy recovery from all your health problems. Not knowing what is causing symptoms is maddening. When I am well, I seldom think of my health as an asset in much more than an abstract glancing kind of way. When I am not well, or in other moments of clarity, I would put a very high dollar value on my current level of well being and I am so grateful for it. Of course, second to my health and my family’s health is our safety and peace of mind. Our emergency fund is a strong element in keeping equilibrium in unsettled times. Best wishes to you, Daniel.

Thank you all for the well-wishes. Another bit of advice, make sure you have good health insurance. I have a marketplace plan. Since my original post, I have had another brain surgery and am now in the midst of radiation and chemotherapy. So far the total medical bills my insurance will not pay is over $475,000. Please get good insurance everyone as this just adds more stress to an already stressful situation.

Glad you’re making it through. Obviously at this point, health is more important than medical debt.
With $475,000 in bills, do you just expect to declare bankruptcy? The US medical system is so broken.

Have you tried applying for County Medical Services? If you are in the US, its a good place to file a claim before declaring bankruptcy over medical costs. You have to do it quick though.

So sorry to hear of your medical woes. Adding insult to injury, comes the cost of meds. While I assume everyone knows about this, I still feel the need to share. I found out about GoodRx from another podcaster years ago. Thankfully, I don’t take any meds, but at the time, my mom was spending hundreds of dollars a month on hers. I was able to take advantage of GoodRx for my mom and can I just say, it has been a blessing. GoodRx (in case anyone out there still does not know) is a discount for meds. No membership required just go online and sign up and Bob’s your uncle. I liken this program to “I’ve got a guy…” You just look up the meds you need on the site and all of the pharmacies offering that medication pop up. There are virtual coupons and you choose what pharmacy you want to buy your meds. On just 1 med, my mom was saving literally hundreds of dollars. Be well and stay safe, everyone!

GoodRx works for pets, too. My dog has prescription eyedrops. Without the coupon they were over $100; with coupon, $16. I didn’t even have to sign up, I just print the coupon or show it on my phone at the pharmacy. I’m grateful for it, but also don’t really get why it works.

What kind of marketplace plan do you have?
