AtomicStar – THIS HAPPENED TO ME THIS WEEK – i do NOT have Free Returns, but based on a false INAD and the following story I am just about to assume it doesn’t even matter.
Buyer gets jacket. Jacket does not fit (YES, size and measurements and even my own style notes added about fit). Buyer even said in message to me “I did read your notes, but I guess I guessed wrong.” Cool, no problem at all. But then I see I would be paying the return shipping. What? NO. So I told buyer to donate the jacket, and i just issued them refund b/c I was NOT going to pay another $8 for shipping. Ebay is very slick though. When you let them keep item, and click “refund the buyer” It posts the sale amount and then sort of suggests by way of a radio button to add in original shipping as a refund, too. NOPE.
The gurus tend to swing toward “fashion” IMO. I am happy to pick up catalog brands (or mature brands) if the entry price is low. Would I spend $8 on an Alfred Dunner top? No. But $2 or the bins? Sure.
I also have the 6 (bought in 2016). Mine loses battery super fast while listing, using my marco polo (video chat app), and taking photos. I will check into the battery switch as well. I have sort of a complex charging schedule for it so I can maximize time.
For about 2 months, I had a second iphone 6 (an extra we had) and it was fantastic. I used it for ebay and posh only and it was very good. I had to give it up to my husband when he dunked his phone.11/07/2018 at 8:41 am in reply to: Ed Welch Journal of Antiques Article – Selling Higher Priced Items #51335HistoryNerd – I have used online authenticators/appraisers with good success! Not to be rude, but we are talking about a $1,000 piece of art not $10,000 – so I think you could start with an online expert (who are from auction houses around the world). It’s pretty cheap too ($15?). See what they say and then decide if you want to find someone IRL. I have used Value my Stuff which was founded by a Sothebys guy. I am getting ready to send them a tapestry today to review.
AtmoicStar – I see it all the time and pass on it. The reality is if she bought it, someone else will too! Glad it can have a second life and you are making money. I just went to their website and they do have some cute items! Ha!
I would love to win an online clothing lot auction. The ones I have seen are a giant gaylord of blurry clothing with no brand names.I think when we remember some of this job is simply data entry it takes the “I don’t want to…” out of the mix.
11/06/2018 at 8:13 pm in reply to: what is this shot glass looking thing with the painted dog? #51320I think the dog looks like a foxhound plus the red rim (like fox hunt coat). That was my first impression? Not sure if that helps.
Sometimes it’s just a psychological wrap – you know the item is fine, but the buyer may like seeing more padding. But they don’t really need expensive bubble wrap. As for breakables, different story.
Steven S – your numbers just WOW me. I think I need to catch up on your WHAT SOLD videos. 🙂
Halloween Week was Meh!
in ebay store: 950
Items sold:24 ebay, 4 posh = 29
Sales: $683 ebay, Posh $150 after fees – $833
RETURNS: 2! In One Week. UGH. Fit issue and a FAlse INAD. I am very lucky usually.Buyer side – I purchased a flawed item from one of the big fashion clearance sellers. Well, it arrived with a piece missing. They used a stock photo of complete item and kind of used a real photo but didn’t disclose the flaw just “our items may have damage” which they said covered themselves….
They have free returns. I contacted them and we agreed on a partial refund. They have totally ghosted me. I have sent 4 messages! Is this their strategy? I am going to send one more message and then leave a neutral. Maybe that will get their attention, I hate doing that but YEESH. This is the second bad experience I have had with these super large sellers lately, no wonder ebay is making some of these changes.11/02/2018 at 7:38 pm in reply to: Ed Welch Journal of Antiques Article – Selling Higher Priced Items #51133Thank you for sharing this rather curious reseller’s parable.
So, the buyer and his expert needed the provenance of the original dealer? What if Welch had simply said “I got it at a flea market,” Then, No deal? I guess he ad 3 other buyers interested at this ONE show he could have sold it to. Where did the first dealer get the painting? A level 1 dealer? So, let’s say:
Level 1 junk dealer sells Painting for $1000 and does a happy dance to a Level 3?
Level 3? dealer sells the painting to level 6 Welch for $7200?
Welch Sells for $35,000 to a level 9 dealer extending his skills (although I would argue, he sold the painting in 1 day within a small crowd, so maybe NOT a stretch after all?)
Level 9 dealer sells to the end user for $50,000 in his fancy shop.Of course, we are talking antiques and finery here and the 1980s.
Interesting.. I had a package go from Missouri to Puerto Rico to Arizona this week. The buyer was tracking it online and said “uh is this normal?” um NO! He got it right on time, but it was so strange.
What further made me stress was I had a package that same day going to Puerto Rico so I had convinced myself I swapped the labels.
Good tip on barcodes. I usually sharpie them and put label over, but not always! If you can only share minimally – do your own closet items and do seasonal items.
yes – I have had pretty good luck w/ kids clothes (boots/ Coats) as well! I don’t sell many, only higher end brands when I see them. I rarely pick up kids.
In the phone app, scroll down to “SHOWROOMS” in the SHOP tab and you will see what they are currently showcasing and try to source those items if you can or cross post them. For example, today it tells me “oversized blazers, leopard print skirts, and camel coats (and more).
Inventory for hard goods is tricker for me. Clothing I have the tubs/number system down using custom SKU field. I don’t have a back-up for this, however. Wonder how concerning this is.
Ok, back to hard goods inventory – I have open shelving with random “bins” of hardgoods. I just kinda know where they are mostly b/c I do move things around often as I acquire new items/make a grouping or lot of items/etc. I keep antique paper ephemera in my dining room buffet due to basement moisture and worry about wear /tear in the “dungeon.”This is very good to know . In future, I would probably buy insurance on it myself if possible if I were to run into this in future with over $50. What a mess! Surely there has to be an easier way to anticipate buyers not shipping correctly.
Priority A is my secret sauce! Order a stack on USPS (free) and use as needed.
However, I have been grooving on cubic shipping using Pirate Ship lately. It imports ebay sales – super easy but perhaps not for a newer seller right now. I am in middle America so it saves me money shipping to coasts mostly using polymailers. -
