MyCottage,
I was wondering what your rate of return is and on what items. I was also wondering if you could share a little more about your statement “it hasn’t been a problem”.
Jay,
It appears that they are trying to become a central location that people go to for ecommerce information whether as a seller or consumer. The more data they gather about stores (what they sell, their ratings, etc.), sellers, and consumers etc., the more they make that data available, and the more they are able to become a resource for sellers and/or buyers, the more power and influence they have and create. This then leads to advertisers wanting to pay them to advertise on their site. If they grow enough, companies such as eBay, Amazon, etc. may take a look and pay to partner with them or buy them out. In addition, if their traffic and use grows enough, they can easily change from being a free service to being a paid service. Moreover, If they have it set up to “drop a cookie” on visiting computers, it gives them more tracking abilities and therefore data gathering opportunities. Many do not realize that a cookie is most likely being dropped on their computer when they visit a site. This cookie then sends information back to the originator about such things as sites you visit.
Jay, think about this way. If you want to know what other sellers are doing in ecommerce across platforms or if you want to shop but do want to take the time to visit the various platforms, would you go to one main place to find the information you want if you could? The answer is probably yes which is what they are banking on. This could actually reduce and/or increase traffic to a particular platform.

Yes, Free Returns will probably effect search rankings. A seller will have to make the decision as to what is best – the search rankings + sales against the factors involved with free return shipping.
Jay,
They are collecting data. Data leads to traffic. Traffic leads to advertising dollars. Traffic + data can lead to contracts with major companies such as ebay who want their data. Ebay just bought out a company who deals in data which they are incorporating into the seller experience and most likely are using when making marketplace decisions.
I find it interesting that at the bottonm of the website of this page, they have the logo of several major companies such as ebay and Amazon. So, I guess that must mean they are gathering data from across marketplace platforms.
As with most websites (especially those focused on gathering data) a cookie is probably set to drop on any computer that visits the site. Cookies are dropped on computers to track user activity for data gathering and/or marketing purposes.
Jay,
While a seller might see an increase in sales, the other side of the coin is: the loss in shipping a seller will assume as well as the possible loss of dollar value and time for any items returned that cannot be resold because of the condition they are in. Of course EBay is going to “sell” the upside of free returns. It’s good for their marketplace ( just like charging us extra and/ or higher fees), but it is not necessarily good for the sellers. They are a technology company. What a technology company can do with the information they gather is endless. Take a minute to read the section titled About Us if you visit the site.
MDC Galleries,
Let me say that I am a very small-time seller, so what I do may not apply to sellers whose scale is larger than mine. I am learning it is best to keep everything simple although simple may lead to more time investment. The more integrated one becomes into eBay’s or any other company’s programming (such as using anything automatic like Business or Return Policies), the more opportunity exists for small and large scale programming issues to occur which may effect sellers individually or on the whole. There are some things we all must participate in (creating a listing) because it is simply part of the platform but others things are optional and once opted in, the account coding becomes part of a larger set of specified programming coding. When a company’s programming changes or when a company is running a programming test that goes out to all accounts, once the programming test is retracted it is not guaranteed that all accounts will go back to how they were before the programming test. That is simply the nature of programming and coding. There are many codes at play at one time and all it takes is for one code (that is supposed to interact with another code in order to create or undo an action) to be off to change the sequence of events programmed to happen. Remember, it only takes one letter or number error to throw off coding and the subsequent actions.
The other main thing I have learned is that there is no such thing as no returns with eBay unless there are extenuating circumstances. eBay sets up the platform in favor of returns because it is best for their marketplace. Just read their 30-day money back guarantee. In addition, read the wording on this page,
Return an item for a refund
https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/returns-refunds/returning-item?id=4041“If the item you received doesn’t match the description in the original listing, or if it arrived faulty or damaged, you’re covered under the eBay Money Back Guarantee. You can return it even if the seller’s returns policy says they don’t accept returns.
If you no longer want an item, you’ll be able to see in the listing if the seller offers returns, how long you have to request a return, and any other conditions. You can check the listing by selecting the item in your Purchase history.”
Personally, I did look over business policies and did not think it was for me. With this discussion, I am going to review my account just to make sure there is nothing active that I do not expect to be active. As for returns, I do not use anything automated. I handle that myself.
I think each seller will have to make the choice as to whether it is best for them and the use of their time to use Business Policies and/or any automated features that are not mandatory.
anniethrifts,
What a frustrating thing to have happen. I would offer that in your most calm professional voice, you call back and speak with a supervisor and then calmly share the facts. Stick to the facts only.I think all sellers would benefit from clicking on Account Settings in the drop down under their name on the left side of the main page. Then go down to Site Preferences and carefully go through each setting. To look at each one, look on the right side where it says Show. Click to open it. Then look over each one and if you wish to change it, click on edit.
If it is the end of the quarter, they may be out due to demand. They may restock each quarter based on supply and demand and for statistical purposes. I would think that if there was going to be some kind of termination of some of boxes, ebay would make an announcement so sellers can find other box sources. It really is not to the benefit of ebay not to supply their sellers with boxes due to the fact that it is free advertising and can help promotes ebay activity.
I would call ebay. I wonder if it is a programming glitch or if there are international restrictions on certain materials (and therefore categories) used to make certain items.

IndySales,
I am not sure why you would refund. You have the documentation to share regardless of which ebay rep answers your call. Why would you have a defect? I would also not worry about feedback. This is clearly on the buyer and not you. I agree with calling ebay to get this closed. I would imagine that PayPal would also back you up if the buyer takes it that far. It seems that the buyer wants her cake and wants to eat it too. She wants to be refunded for an item she does not have which is supposedly damaged but yet someone else is making use of it. So how damaged is it if someone else is making use of it in some way, shape, or form?

I just wanted to share some information with you that may be of benefit regarding your daughter’s educational pursuits.
First, in regards to her testing, if you have not already, you may want to speak with a counselor at her school to see if she qualifies for test accommodations on the ACT/SAT testing. https://www.collegeboard.org/students-with-disabilities
In regards to her college pursuits, by law a person cannot be denied admission to a college due to their disability. You are right about the American with Disabilities Act. There are also other laws that protect persons with disabilities when it comes to attending college. This is a list of laws put together by Houston Community College – http://www.hccs.edu/support-services/disability-services/disability-laws-in-higher-education/. Just because a person is covered by a law, it does not mean a particular college is right for them. You are right about making sure the college chosen is one that will be a best fit for your daughter.
When choosing a college,
Step 1 -make sure your daughter’s medical condition, brain impairment, and anxiety disorder are fully documented and current. Step 2 – If you have identified a college you think your daughter might be interested in attending, look up the college’s website. Once at the website, look under Services. Go to the their Disabled Student Services link where you can read what their procedure is for applying to become a student in the program and for making an appointment with one of their counselors. When you call to make an appointment, ask to have their eligibility paperwork sent to you so you and your daughter can fill it out and have it ready by the time of the appointment. Bring both sets of paperwork to the appointment. This will help them in determining your daughter’s eligibility for services. If she is determined to be eligible for services, they will speak with you and your daughter as to what her goals are, the most appropriate educational path, and how to apply to the college. They will also be able to speak with you as to whether she qualifies for specific and general accommodations.-

I concur with calling ebay. Unfortunately, eventhough she may be past ebay’s window, she is not past PayPal’s window of return. I would offer to check her other feedback for any patterns. I would also offer to work to make sure you are calm, factual, and focused as you handle this. I concur that this could be a clothing rental.
This buyer sounds pretty determined. Make sure you track everything you do and document what is occuring through ebay messaging just in case there are any glitches along the way.
