anniethrifts,
How do you upload photos directly from the Mac Photos application to your ebay listing draft on ebay.com? I also take photos on my iphone and then they get transferred to my computer somehow via icloud which enables me to see them in the photos app. But then to get them to ebay, I’ve always exported them from the photos app into jpeg files, which I then upload to ebay.com. Is there a way for me to skip a step and get them to ebay without exporting?Sonia
My working hypothesis on running sales on ebay (which I do regularly now, even if it’s just 10%), is that people who have viewed and/or are watching the items will get a notification from ebay about the price change, and that reminder about the item drives them to buy it. Of course, the larger the price reduction, the more likely they will be to buy it. That’s how I explain to myself the uptick in sales that I get in the first few days of a sale. No, I have no scientific proof of this.
Wow. That is a really nice improvement. It looks like it corrects the colors to be a bit more accurate, too. Does it work well even in cases where the background is not white?
Thanks for sharing the before/after photos.
aperture,
What does the Lightroom autocorrect feature do? What kind of problems does it help with? Not all rural areas have no culture. Just a lot less in general, but again, how often do I need to go do cultural things? The rural area where I live (sorry, not revealing where) has a number of fairly well endowed foundations that support lots of performing arts events in our area, as well as several movie theaters. In the summer there are more jazz and classical concerts than I have time to go to, and most feature top musicians from the nearest big city several hours away. Better they come to me than I have to go to the city! And there are also 2-3 very large rock and country music event weekends every summer if you like the “hordes of people” kind of thing. On the other hand, the picking here is not as cheap as it seems to be in Luray. My average COGS is much higher than $1, b/c there’s not much here for sale for just $1, except at infrequent rummage sales.
So it’s just a matter of research to find an area that fits your requirements.
There’s also the option of smaller and cheaper cities. I heard Lexington KY is supposed to be cool.

04/21/2018 at 7:15 pm in reply to: What is the deal with $0 value gift card lots selling for $$? #38086I clicked on the first listing and maybe I’m gullible, but it seemed legit to me. It said “for collecting or crafting purposes only,” and even described some cosmetic flaws on several of the cards. I tend to believe the crafting story, once I learned from ThePaperCastle on youtube that crafters buy lots of scrabble tiles (and other types of game tiles) on ebay. Those apple cards are kinda cool looking.
But who knows.Yeah, I’m getting those numerous crazy specifics, too.
04/18/2018 at 10:46 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Dallas lunch trays, Porcelain bowls, Paint by number kit, Ford trucker hat, Technics amp, 3M transparencies #37952A few favorite sales of the last year or two.
London Country Buses very thick wool conductor’s coat by Briggs and Gibson. From 70s or 80s. I wonder how and why it made its way to the US. Purchased for $10. Sold in 3 months for $99 and sent on its way to Hong Kong. I wonder what the next stop will be on its around the world tour?
I think this is the first pair of Birkenstocks I found and sold. Was excited to find a rare “color.” Purchased for around $7 and sold in 4 months for $77.
Nike Internationalist sneakers. I don’t usually buy Nike sneakers, b/c I’m not interested in keeping track of which ones are valuable and which aren’t. But these were an interesting color, so I looked them up and they seemed to sell reasonably well. Purchased for $5. Sold in 4 months for $44.
Back in 2014 (aka 2 BT), I purchased an Ivanka Trump dress for myself that I never wore. So it was still new with tags when I sold it in 4 months last year for $55. I bought it on sale, so I don’t think I paid more than $40 for it, if that.
I could NOT pass up this bunch of yarn (10 skeins) that was still in the original shipping packaging with a postmark of 1948! I think I paid $2. Didn’t generate much interest, but eventually sold after 5 months for $33 (I lowered the price from $44).
So I knew from Jay & Ryan that slouch boots were no longer popular, but I bought these anyway b/c they were LL Bean (good quality) and in like new condition, and there weren’t any others like it online. Paid $5. Sold in 5 months for $44.
BOLO for good quality mens panama hats. I never thought about them or knew anything about them, when I came upon a crappy yard sale on a super hot day that had a stack of these things – some without hat bands. They seemed good quality to me, but I really had no idea, and there was no cell reception there! And I really like to avoid buying items that won’t get a profit of over $30, b/c i have limited storage space, and no desire to change my storage system which works for the 400 items I have. So, with the help of the heat, I whipped myself up into a state of anxious indecision, finally deciding on getting 3 of the hats. They were $2-3 each. When I got home I kicked myself for not getting more, but oh well. This is the best quality one – sold in 4 months for $70. The other two have not yet sold, but have watchers. I think I need to lower the price a little.
This very old wool bucket hat I found at the bottom of one of those crappy bins. I had seen this bin in the thrift store many times, and finally decided to go through it. I thought this hat was cool, and it looked very old, and it turned out it was made by some old luxury brand, Conte de Florence, that I had never heard of. There was nothing else like it online, so I bought it for $2. Sold it in a few months for $50.
All this talk about my best sales is really boosting my ego. So to balance things out, I’ll end with a dud again. I sell quite a few embroidery kits and make good money from them most of the time, and sometimes even hook rug kits. So I bought a new in box Nascar hook rug kit for $1 when I was in an area that had no cell service. Isn’t everything Nascar supposed to be super cool? I ended up donating it rather than waiting forever to get $7-10 for it. I don’t have my photos anymore. Here’s the exact same model for sale on ebay right now:
https://tinyurl.com/y9c7egy8Jay, it’s not always possible to put the cheapest option first for all buyers. Regular priority might be cheapest for buyers that are close by, but I also might put a medium flat rate box option that would be the best option for far away buyers, but more expensive for close buyers. So these far away buyers will only see their best option if they go looking into other shipping options.
I sometimes put in a note to remind myself how I was planning to ship the item. For example, priority mail tyvek envelope vs. box. Regular polymailer vs padded polymailer.
I keep track of my inventory and COGS in GoDaddy in the following way:
in the “non business” expenses tab, I created a new category called “Inventory”, and that’s where I enter in new items I’ve just purchased, along with purchase price and location purchased. Then, when that item sells, I just change the category of that item from Inventory to Cost of Goods Sold, and the date from the date of purchase to the sell date. This works really well for me. BUT, it will not work well for anyone with more than 500-700 items in their inventory, b/c there isn’t a good search function for finding an item that has sold.
I have chronic health issues. If they get really bad, I may need to shut down my store for a while until I feel better. Having to deal with a large pile of sales when I’m feeling better may just re-trigger things, and it would definitely stress me out to know that I absolutely have to get better by a certain day or my shipments will be late. Or say somebody in my family dies. After I’m done with the funeral, etc, I’m going to want to ease back into ebay slowly, not have a big pile of shipping work waiting for me. Or maybe I need to shut down my store indefinitely to go take care of a sick family member.
In other words, life doesn’t always run on a predictable schedule.
The only part of vacation mode that makes sense is the option to also disable transactions in your store while you are away. That is something I could see using once in a while.
