Hiya, I know you guys use extended handling time as opposed to Vacation mode. What problems did you run into with vacation mode?

The “vacation” mode is just not the optimal solution. If you put on Vacation Mode but do not change your handling time, then eBay will punish you for late shipping. And buyers can complain the item was shipped late and eBay will back up the buyer.
eBay told us to change our handling time if we were going to be away.
I guess my question is “why do people think Vacation Mode is a good solution”?

Jay,
I personally do not understand vacation mode. It does not seem to be well thought out by ebay. I do not understand how one can be on vacation mode and still be expected to conduct business (ship) as usual. I am really glad it is addressed in here because I think it saves alot of future headaches from happening. -

The only part of vacation mode that makes sense is the option to also disable transactions in your store while you are away. That is something I could see using once in a while.

But why not just change handling time? Allow transactions and then ship when you return.
Whats the benefit of shutting down your store?

I have chronic health issues. If they get really bad, I may need to shut down my store for a while until I feel better. Having to deal with a large pile of sales when I’m feeling better may just re-trigger things, and it would definitely stress me out to know that I absolutely have to get better by a certain day or my shipments will be late. Or say somebody in my family dies. After I’m done with the funeral, etc, I’m going to want to ease back into ebay slowly, not have a big pile of shipping work waiting for me. Or maybe I need to shut down my store indefinitely to go take care of a sick family member.
In other words, life doesn’t always run on a predictable schedule.

Understood. Makes sense that a seller may want to close their store down temporarily because of health or emergency issues.

We want to, eventually, travel a lot and for unplanned lengths of time. So we’d need to be able to put our store on hold without losing any of our listings. I’m sure we’d still have to pay the store subscription every month but that would be a small price to pay.

So you want to be able to close your store for long lengths of time, but still have your items available to relist.
You can only extend your handling time for 30 business days. Does anyone know how long you can out your store in vacation? Or is there another way to solve this issue?

I am going to be away for 8 weeks and looking for solutions to this. Normally I switch my handling time but, as Jay says, you can only extend it as far as 30 days.
My understanding of vacation mode was that it only hid your listings from searches, so someone that had previously purchased from you could still buy an item, and you would get dinged for late shipment.
However, I looked at vacation mode again and it seems to have changed. The check box now reads:
“Keep people from buying your fixed price listings while you’re on vacation. Your auction style listings will still run as scheduled”
and the information link for this check box states:
“When you select to hide your fixed price listings, they will be hidden almost immediately (although this may take up to a few hours) from search and store pages. In addition, buyers will not be able to make purchases from the listings.”
This suggest to me that you can actually stop anyone from buying from your store so long as your items aren’t on auction.
Has anyone used vacation mode recently? And does it now actually prevent purchases, rather than just doing a bad job of hiding your listings?

I’ll let others answer your questions about vacation mode since we dont use it.
But with extended handling time, remember that it’s 30 BUSINESS days. If you add in weekends, it’s about 45 days. So if you’re gone for two months (60 days), you could put your store on vacation for two weeks, and then kick on the 30 business day extended handling time.
You just need to really look at a calender and count the days

I’m currently using vacation mode for the first time in years because there’s a complicated medical situation going on with my Mom. I booked a one-way flight and had no idea of my return date, so changing handling time wasn’t an option.
Like dragon, I remember hearing years ago that if people had your item on their watch list they could still purchase it while you were in vacation mode. I’m pretty certain that’s no longer the case.
I’ve been on vacation since Sunday and haven’t had one sale. I did a test run signing in on my other ID, searching for one of my items and trying to purchase it. The item still shows up in search, but when you click “Buy it Now”, it says that the seller is away and not processing orders at this time.
Listings continue to end on their scheduled dates.

Terri,
depending on how you set up vacation mode, buyers can absolutely still purchase items. See the config screenshot I shared above. If you don’t check the last box, then buyers can still buy.

It absolutely can prevent purchases (and has been able to do so for at least the past few years that I’ve been on ebay), but that’s just an option – as you mentioned, the text you quoted has a checkbox next to it. If you don’t check that box, then buyers can continue to purchase your items, but they’ll see a banner message telling them you are away.
For everyone else’s benefit, here’s the VM config screen.

Yes, you have to check the box.
