Wow! That clock would not have left my house! I still haven’t found one yet and I have my dad looking too.
I was shopping on Ebay yesterday and noticed at the top was delivery options 1-4 day filter. Also free returns was displayed first in the lower menu. Just wondering if anyone who is allowed to participate in guaranteed delivery or doing free returns has noticed a difference in sales? I’m on the waiting list for GD.
I expect that retail will continue to change. But, stores like Costco, Target and Walmart combining groceries/drug/clothing/home goods will probably come out winners. Pure clothing stores I expect to continue to struggle. The TJ Maxx companies I do have confidence in. I even bought some of their stock in my retirement account. I just picked up a few items from Marshalls yesterday to resell and give as gifts – Rae Dunn, Philosophy skin care, Velvet. A lot of their (especially home decor) stuff is junk from China but there are some really nice brands hidden in there at better prices. It is excess of the true product and discontinued items, not made-for-outlet poorer quality. You can’t search their deals online by brand, so one needs to go hunting in the store. If I did Amazon, I would definitely source there.
11/08/2017 at 5:12 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Schott jacket, Pin Up vignettes, Steering Wheel, TV VCR Combo, Walkman, Ham Radio #25295Thanks Steve. I don’t like dealing with clothes but sold a Patagonia tee my son outgrew overnight, so they seem to move well. Happy to report that I sold some other things I’ve had listed quite a while.
I held out a long while to get a good price for this. Paid $5.99 at GW and thought it was awesome. Artist was listed and I thought it was cool. Blenko Art Glass Pottery Ashtray
Took a best offer of $38 for this. Paid 3.99 indy thirft. Small nautical painting
These 1980s mugs are winners. Paid $2 at a very pricey estate sale in my neighborhood. Taylor & Ng Mug
I’ve been struggling to sell vintage wrapping paper, but this sold quickly, paid $1 at the storage unit clean out thrift. African American Christmas Wrap
This is an interesting topic. I think there are definitely some people who are well off but don’t mind buying clean used items. Maybe some would be put off by shopping at thrifts – I suspect more people under 40 than over. But lack of time to hunt and convenience are key. The internet is always open and you can find exactly what you want quickly without digging. Plus in our not so distant memories was the great depression. Even our wealthiest clients were fairly paralyzed emotionally.
My friend just had a vintage tiki birthday party. She found amazing deals on vintage tablecloths and a beautiful dress on Ebay. While I charge high prices for my hunt time and would have priced her finds much higher, there are other (volume?) sellers on Ebay who do not require as much meat on the bone or maybe do not value the same items as I do. So, there are bargains to be had on Ebay. Even those like my friend who could easily afford to shop new love to get bargains and authenticity too.

Number of items listed this week: 6A lot of low dollar Christmas spin offs. These are items I had for sale last Christmas and don’t want to continue to store another year. It was a very busy non-ebay life week and thus not much listing and no sourcing. I’m focused on another small death pile box of Christmas and it should be a better listing week. I have two boxes of flatware and some serving pieces I’d like to get up.
If I lived near an Ikea, I would sell lots of these awesome reusable bags Ikea Zipper Bag and Large Ikea Shopper. They also make fabric bags now and then. I have purchased them online as plastic is banned here along the Coast. Plus, easy to store and cheap to ship.
Have a great week.
11/06/2017 at 10:12 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 333: The Illusion of Keeping Up With Everything #25100Steve that clock find would have me high for like a week! What a deal.
Yep. And lesson learned about storing unlike items together without proper wrapping. Seems like you kind of have to pay your dues making each mistake and then you know what not to do. I think participating in SL helps me avoid a few altogether. Just listening all this time prepares me take things in stride even though I’m kind of a perfectionist. So, thanks again SL!
I still have not heard from this person. I received the replacement item from the other seller and shipped out today with a shipping upgrade to Fed Ex Home. Fingers crossed they do not leave me my first negative. Packed the crap out of it.
Still no word. Someone on my Facebook reseller group who is a much better researcher than I actually found a replacement. So, I’m shipping out the other two pieces late and will send the replacement piece when I get it. I hope she doesn’t leave me my first negative for being so late on delivery. I’ll try to fight it if she does.

Number of items listed this week: 13Slow week but Sunday was good again. I don’t really have a good scavenging story but I love to pick up overlooked household cleaning products at estate sales.
Treated myself to a rummage sale (one of the big annual 3) and it was kind of a bust. Not much older vintage stuff, more newer items, lots of shoppers, prices fairly high. I felt a bit zombie like in there. Also had a garage sale with my friend, which was hoppin’. I purged about 6 boxes of unlisted used stuff that was bulky, unbranded, or regrettable rookie picks and mostly got what I sourced it for. I decided sometimes I used to go a bit past granny chic right into too granny. I also found another box of vintage Christmas items to list while I was going through things. Now I need to reorganize a bit the unlisted items in storage. There’s some room on the shelves! Still plenty of backlog though.
Had my second real customer issue of all time. I can’t get this person to answer my messages. It involved a item that broke in storage and I’m working on a solution.
With Halloween events and continuing education seminar, it’s not looking good for listing this week. Boo. Happy Halloween! I can’t wait to watch Stranger Things 2 later.
To qualify as a Top Rated Seller, you can only have up to 0.5% of transactions with one or more defects over the most recent evaluation period…
The defect rate won’t affect your seller performance status until you have transactions with defects with at least 5 different buyers, or at least 4 different buyers to impact Top Rated status, within your evaluation period.
Hm, I have a .42 rate now without this one. But only 3 buyers if I get this one. So maybe ok? Ebay is flagging the % in my seller performance display.10/26/2017 at 9:45 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Harley gloves, vintage microphone, trucker wallet, vintage Apple monitor, models & trains #24479Steve, I forgot to comment on last week’s video that your denim Levi’s fleece lined jacket really took me back to my high school days in the 1980s Napa Valley. I think every guy had one but I haven’t seen one again until now. Funny how certain things really trigger a strong memory for you.
I was lucky to find this super cheap in a bag with other worthless ones. It was actually worth more, but I took a best offer of $25 and the buyer was thrilled. https://www.ebay.com/itm/332380772554 One of those moments when I’m like “it’s a tiny piece of plastic someone is grateful to pay $25 for”. My husband has been telling the kids I’m taking advantage of people. 🙂
Paid $3 at a garage sale and praying they arrive unbroken. Sold immediately. https://www.ebay.com/itm/232531845059
I heart selling vintage nos linens. Paid $5 at flea market. Sold quickly https://www.ebay.com/itm/232516342234
I sold a whole bunch of these RA plates I source for about $10 in quick succession. https://www.ebay.com/itm/232523504359 I later was pleased to see on my own home page that Ebay was showing this first when I clicked on the horizontal image carousel bar for Anthropologie plates. Could have been a pin on Pinterest getting active too. Whatever the case I’m grateful. I just ordered the last remaining 4 from the retailer at clearance prices of $4. Also Ebay is showing this as my first suggestion to restock in the growth recommendations.

Number of items listed this week: 19Solid week on Ebay for my little store. My daughter had a long playdate this weekend and I treated myself to a little bit of morning sourcing and afternoon of listing. I was very picky about my sourcing and mainly bought things I have sold before. I did splurge a bit on a lot of Dansk flatware for $50 because that grumpy thrift lady knows her stuff. We were both grimacing after striking the deal. It was fun to get out and I had a long chat with a regular who has an antique booth about the pros and cons of sourcing estate sales, thrifts, and social networking locally. Renewed my pact to get through my rookie backlog and go to estate sales for the good midcentury stuff. I continue to work though the backlog, bringing one box of seasonal or similar items up from the garage at a time. I love taking a box down that’s listed. On the RA front, I sold a whole box of dog art plates before I even had the chance to unpack them so that was great too.
I get emotional on Ebay only about giving up on stuff that is not selling. I finally donated a handful of items a couple of times last year that had very few views and it hurt a little bit. It’s like admitting defeat, but I know I can make better choices today as a picker and there is just so much stuff out there to keep the store more active. I also get a bit impatient and frustrated talking to the basic store reps overseas. I always end up politely asking for a supervisor.
R&J: after enjoying some time at home I’m wondering if you might like to do more multi-day sourcing trips in the nearby metro area(s)? Perhaps you could swap AB&Bs with someone or sign up for an online luxury pet sitting service? Reflecting on some of the great items you pulled out of there before I imagine you would find even more amazing stuff. Just a thought. Have a great week everyone.
