LOL – no it would have been good to go early, but I stuck with the crew and we slept in. Your advice was sound. I would love to go again with a lot more time. Even just picking up cool items and checking them out or educating myself by chatting with the vendors would be worthwhile. Plus it’s a treat to be around others who appreciate these items and see them in great condition. I’m just spoiled where I live because I can pay less and there is a lot of vintage stuff.
Went to this and I have some quick tips on how NOT to do it.
#1 Bring your kids.
#2 Bring your husband who doesn’t like to shop.
#3 Pay an entrance fee for everyone.
#4 Do not bring hats or sunglasses and wear long sleeves.
#5 Go expecting low prices, at least in the back corner where they didn’t bother to clean anything – nope!
#6 Go late and don’t give yourselves much time.Ok, seriously it was fun. But I think you would need to go very early and give yourself a lot of time to shop and haggle. The vendors seemed to be very used to people overpaying. In the front, the pyrex lady was charging double what it goes for on ebay. And even in the back, the deals were scarce. I bought one item – a Catherineholm lotus pan, just marked as enamelware. I should be able to pay for our entrance fees with the profit. I’m appreciating my local scene a bit more. If I went back, I’d look for special items to keep in the front and forget about scavenging. They said the Long Beach one is better and easier to get through. I did like how they kept the new stuff out in it’s own area and the clothing specialists separate.
Fun fun I quickly snaped a few pictures Rose Bowl quick pics

Hi Guys,
I work part-time and on Ebay so I can take care of my kids most afternoons. I’m the last surviving lady in our small immediate family, and my husband and I are both only children. Our dads are ok for now, but it is foreseeable that one will go mentally and one physically downhill. I expect it will be my privilege to be their caregiver and advocate while doing Ebay. I think it’s pretty awesome that you put your family first and it’s a shame our society doesn’t recognize that. Kudos and best of luck making it work. I love to scavenge in the Balboa area when we visit San Diego. It’s a beautiful city I once lived in.-

It has been slow for me too and I do think it’s election related. The overall mood here on the coast is not great and the weather is warm to boot. Have you tried running sales or doing a couple of auctions?

* Total Sales: $208
* Highest Price Sold: $68 New Anthropologie Knobs
* Average Price Sold: $42
* Returns & Int’l Sales: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $15
* Number of items listed this week: 0Another pretty slow week, but I did sell RA items, some as Christmas presents per buyer. Life is really getting in the way of listing and my contract work is quite busy. I’m in a tax sensitive field, so post-election should get interesting. I’d love a day of simple ebay listing with a scented candle lit and a podcast on…
I learned about money from my dad, a proudly cheap Swede from MN. My dad grew up wealthy but is extremely thrifty because he is super practical and cares not for impressing others. He’s about doing his activities not buying – “a car gets you from point a to point b”. My father-in-law grew up the poor son of a trucker in the South. He was cheap out of necessity and dreams of being rich – he just finally bought himself a new luxury car and now he won’t turn on the air conditioning.
I share this because it’s interesting that my husband and I both learned to be frugal from each of them for different reasons. They both were all about education and helped us with college and graduate degrees so we could help ourselves. We are pretty much the same with our kids, but they are still growing up and I think you need to scale the lessons and examples until they are ready to hear it. As a bit of a helicopter mom, I find it hard but useful to let them fail in safe circumstances. My son at 13 has already gone from a spender to a saver once he realized it’s no longer fun to buy just to get something, and had some of his own purchase regrets.
I do share Jim’s belief that much is nature not nuture. Some kids will be harder to influence then others and maybe need to make more mistakes.
I don’t watch tv much at all but had read this article during my lunch break. I like the ads. The gist is finding the perfect unique gift – kind of taking on etsy. Smart approach I think. The mood is sh*t around here with the election shock, but people will get back to shopping soon I’m sure and turn their attention to the holidays.
Hi – yes, same artist. I added two more photos to the board.
I shop a few online deals Thursday or BF am but mainly for gifts. I’ve also gone to brick & mortars after the first rush and looked high & low for items misplaced by the crazy am crowd, but most items I was targeting were gone. RA is much better for me on 12/26. I always hit my favorite store when they open. My eBay sales were actually better in January than December last year.

What kind of knife are you using in your shipping videos to slice cardboard? Also can you show it if you are using a thank you card please? Thanks!
Thanks Jay! If I am able to make some headway on my vintage backlog next year, I’ll have some cool sales to share in the future. I’ve kind of forgotten what all is in there. Definitely some items I wouldn’t buy again too. I pay more per item while thrifting, but that’s the kid free limited time I have to shop.
Not sure my strategy is too different but the online RA items move faster and keep my small store active so I don’t mind the hybrid with a higher COGS.
My kids tease me about couponing “Mom loves coupons” and selling on Ebay. So far, they just want me to sell their stuff and give them the money. Of course, I tell them they have to do the work – typing, photos, packing, etc. – and I will help them sell on my account. This is my daughter’s first listing:

She got all artsy with her photos and overpriced it. Just like her mother! “) But it was fun to explain the options and process to her.
11/07/2016 at 8:12 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 283: Running Our Businesses Without A Safety Net #5108I’m with you Anna. I actually had an even worse week than this selling a single item. Unfortunately, I countered an offer for $200 that I should have taken too. No listing – non Ebay life is very demanding right now and some post-surgery residual pain is getting in the way. I also dropped my usual sales % to 10 from 15 or 20. Hopefully this coming week will be better.
Don’t forget it’s a holiday weekend (Veterans Day Friday) so it’s a good time to run a sale.
Retro Treasures I agree. Some of my new RA items don’t return as much but they sell faster and keep my store active. I’m also editing my used purchasing habits based on listing and packing time, because my time is so limited.
Hi Kate, this happens often. I find cool art that I respond to but I cannot make out the signature and I’m not quite sure of the medium. Looks 60s. The poor photos were done hastily – sorry. Thought I would run it by you.
