We don’t have kids, but if we did…I’d do everything I could to get them to catch the scavenger bug.
Has anyone here been able to incorporate their kids into their scavenging and selling? I know teenagers can be difficult, but I’ve always thought that getting paid to work on an eBay store would be so much more fulfilling than the minimum wage jobs I had in high school.

My son is still too little to really help, (he’s only 8), but we give him little jobs to “help”, like putting labels on packages and carrying boxes into the post office. He comes with me when we hit the thrift stores, and asks “Are we getting that to keep, or sell?”. I have made a point of giving him a few dollars from time to time, as “payment” for helping. Money is still kind of esoteric for him. He isn’t a very materialistic kid, so getting money for work doesn’t make a big impact yet.
I hope that when he is older, he will want to sell on his own. I suspect he’ll end up in a tech job, like his dad, but hopefully he will see ebay as a good side-hustle.

Two of my kids (9 and 6) have items listed in my store. Just today my daughter came out to ask if I had anything she could list. I gave her some 90’s NWT Christmas plush bears. They help take the pictures of the items and help do research. When their items sell, they help pack them. I explain how the fees and shipping work and show them what their profit is. Half the profit is deposited in their savings account and the other half is theirs as cash to do with as they please.
It’s a great learning tool.

I can’t think of a better way to teach kids how to make money. Much better than preparing them for a boring minimum wage jobs.

My kids tease me about couponing “Mom loves coupons” and selling on Ebay. So far, they just want me to sell their stuff and give them the money. Of course, I tell them they have to do the work – typing, photos, packing, etc. – and I will help them sell on my account. This is my daughter’s first listing:

She got all artsy with her photos and overpriced it. Just like her mother! “) But it was fun to explain the options and process to her.

My son is 8 and has started showing interest in what I do with eBay. He often comes with me when I go to thrift stores or auctions and usually gives me a good amount of time before his interest is no longer held by the process. My only saving grace at one particular auctioneer’s events is that they are family friends and the auctioneer has his son and my son run items when they are there. That keeps my son busy for most of the auction.
He does ask if something if for us or eBay quite a bit. He has asked to list some of his belongings as well. For now, I do the listing and give him the final profit. I figure that I’ll start really getting him involved around 10 years old and set him up as an employee so we can start putting money into a ROTH IRA account while he is young. Even if the tax rules change in his lifetime, the amount of time the money will have to grow will give him a nice little nest egg later in life.

My kids are 14 and 16 now. When I first started my daughter would go thrifting with me and help with photography and shipping but then she lost interest. My son has also helped with photography but not recently. I’ve offered each of them to do photography for me and I’d pay them $1 per item but so far they haven’t taken me up on it. A couple of weeks ago my daughter said she wanted to open her own eBay store but hasn’t mentioned it since. If she did, I think we’d want to set up her own pay pal account. I’d like to see them both learn how to do this. I think that as they get older and start actually having crappy part time jobs then it will become more obvious to them why doing ebay is a good idea.

I pay my kids a 10% Finder’s Fee. Two of them love it the others don’t seem as interested. My son finds stuff I would never pick up and my daughter and I are in friendly competition to see who gets to certain areas first since we both pick up similar things. It’s fun!
