headscarf example – not my favorite depiction, but it gets the point across
The large print word on the bottom of the doll is pronounced “baranky”, which in Russian refers to the bagel-like bread pictured in this wikipedia article:
https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Бараночное_изделие#.D0.91.D0.B0.D1.80.D0.B0.D0.BD.D0.BA.D0.B0Makes me think that there used to be some of these baranky in her hands, perhaps hanging on the ribbon?
For comparison, the bottom of the doll that Nancy found with piglets is a word that roughly translates to “pig lady.”
I think MyCottage is correct about the ear-like protrusions at the top of the head really being the ends of a knotted scarf – there are many depictions of eastern european village women wearing scarves on their heads like that.
photos of death piles would be cool! Then you can show progress along the way (first there were 10 piles, then 9, and so on).
I’ll be here cheering you on!
Crystal,
I got the same advice from ebay on a recent return, and it all turned out fine in the end. I just made sure that I called them when I received the undamaged item back to confirm that the right thing to do was to refund the buyer via paypal (minus my restocking fee), and then I called them after I did that and provided the paypal transaction id number, and they closed out the return/case. I think this must be how they are now working around their software, which doesn’t seem to be able to handle the “incorrect return reason” situation. My understanding is that if you try to do the refund via the ebay website, this will result in the buyer getting refunded original shipping as well, so that’s why I was advised to use paypal instead.

you could also try searching your paypal history.
01/05/2017 at 10:43 pm in reply to: Free Insertion Listings with Premium Store — Is the Amount Cumulative? #9664You are given a monthly allotment of “insertions”, not of “listings.” It’s still early in the month, so most of your listings that were inserted last month are not yet 30-days old. When they reach 30 days, they have to be re-inserted, and it’s at this point that you use up your allotment of insertions.
01/04/2017 at 6:26 am in reply to: Need some advice from the group about selling high end audio equipment #9528I would also seriously evaluate how interested/excited you are about selling and learning about audio equipment, especially considering what a pain the packing part will be, plus the hassle of consignment, etc. I don’t mind making a big effort if it’s something I’m excited about, but otherwise, no way.
01/03/2017 at 3:14 pm in reply to: Hi! Karen from New Hampshire – Ebaying because of Chronic Fatigue/FMS #9486Hi Karen,
I’m in a similar situation, ebay-ing with CFS. It’s hard, but I’m grateful for the flexibility it offers. I’m with you on the goal/strategy of going for higher-profit items, listing at a high price, and being okay to wait a long time to get that price. When one has only a tiny amount of physical & mental energy to spend per day on shipping/photographing/listing, profit per item really matters. I spend most of the day lying around on the couch or in bed anyway, so I’m now trying to think of that as the productive “waiting” part of the business equation. 🙂 Based on my experience of the last year, I’ve decided that 250 items is the max size store that I can handle, so maintaining that with higher-profit items is my goal for this year.
Oh, here’s another CFS-specific tidbit. Others on SL often mention how they listen to the podcast while working/listing. Well, I can’t do that! Do to brain fog issues, I can’t pay attention to two things at once. If I pay attention to the podcast, then I make mistakes in my listings. If I pay attention to listing, then I miss what is being said in the podcast. So I listen to the podcast while relaxing in bed. 🙂
For the same reason, I have to completely pack and label a single purchased item before printing out a label for the next one, otherwise I get the labels all mixed up! Not meaning to complain here, just sharing my strategies for adapting my process to what works with the limitations I have. Setting my handling time to 3-days also helps a lot to accommodate those absolutely-zero-energy days.Best wishes!
I would call ebay. Based on my experience with two incorrect INAD returns recently, I recommend calling ebay at every step along the way, before taking any action on the website. Learned this the hard way, when I mistakenly escalated a case by selecting the “want ebay to step in and help?” option on the website.
I’m doing my own numbers tracking by month now, but I’ve calculated what an average December week looked like for me so as to be consistent with others’ numbers (divided Dec sales by 31 then multiplied by 7).
# of items in store: 250
# of items sold: 11 (4% sell through rate)
Total revenue: $382
COGS: $62
Gross profit: $310
Average sale price: $35
Average gross profit per item: $30
Highest price sold: $275 (handmade men’s shoes, paid $15) – highest sale ever!
Returns: 2, One was a NOS 1980s ski hat that started falling apart after two weeks of use. Next time I invest in any NOS items, will have to do a better quality check.December was a fantastic month for me, and I’ve sure come a long way in the last 12 months. Last December I was thrilled to sell something for $10-15. I’m also feeling great b/c yesterday I removed 25 low-value non-selling items from my store, AND I decided that the lowest price I will ever have anything listed at is $9.99. Before that I was playing around with lowering prices on cheap things that weren’t selling, and it was just getting ridiculous – like going down to $4.99 & $3.99. What a waste of time!
Goal for 2017 is to maintain the same store size while increasing gross profit per item. Would love to get closer to $50. This means I will have to shop more, but buy less, which also means higher mileage costs since I’m in a rural area, so I’ll have to keep an eye on those.
Thank you J&R and the rest of the SL community for your help in getting to this point.

That is really cool! I wish there was one in my area! Not just for free packing supplies, but for the whole concept…
Jay – I have noted and very much appreciate your use of the term “hypothesis” instead of “theory” (both here and on the podcast). I only just discovered this year that I have been using the word “theory” incorrectly for so long.
Hi Becky! So glad to see you on SL! I’m a big fan of Dorky Thrifters.
I think the scanning rules are different for Priority Mail vs First Class. I bring my packages to my PO, and they scan the Priority Mail packages immediately. First Class packages don’t get scanned until the truck picks them up from the PO to take them to the next distribution center.
