I’m sort of running into the same confusion. eBay just started collecting for NJ in May. Once the second quarter ends, I have NJ sales from April and I think beginning of May that I will still need to report and pay online. I’m not sure what I need to do with the in-state sales after they started to collect tax; I’ve been assuming that I do nothing.
I noticed that the tax information for the first two eBay-handled sales were loaded into GoDaddy as uncategorized. I haven’t tried to figure out what I should be doing with that.
Anyway, I’m going to have to make a few phone calls. I think I would prefer to call GoDaddy over eBay.
Was this comment based on what Jay was saying during the podcast? I think he was referring to a buyer who purchased two listings. One was a cruet set and the other were mugs. Jay was concerned that putting too many fragile items into one box may cause damage, and he is suggesting that they not combine shipping when the same buyer buys more than one fragile item.
But what Retro was saying also – you can purchase a second label for one listing and both will track with the item. I sold a set of antique books where each book was 7 or more pounds and there were 8 or so books in total. I packed them in two boxes. I bought the first label as normal. Then I bought a second label under “print another label” in the pull down menu right next to the item.
I’m not a big seller, but I can say my weekend was OK. Not great, not poor. However, my week was really slow with one day of no sales.
I think this time is slow every year; colleges have let out; schools are winding down; people are starting to go to the pool or beach starting Memorial Day; vacations will be happening soon; and so on.
I’ve done it before, but sales of more than one listing don’t come all that often. Sometimes I feel I have a mini-replacements.com in my basement, and, if someone is trying to complete a set, I might sell several items at once. Several months ago, I sold 4 or 5 listings of one pattern and shipped them safely from NJ to WA.
I certainly don’t sell as much as you guys, so I can’t say that my way is best. However, I can try to at least explain my method and you can decide whether to implement it or not. Now, I just need the right sale and I need to remember. I’m not sure which thing is less likely to happen.
I listed 19 items this week. I’m still busy with outside eBay stuff, but I did OK.
Ryanne – I don’t think that you need to ship out pottery items separately for safety. My concern is to not only protect the fragile items from the box being hit from the outside, but also protect the items inside from hitting against each other as they are moved.
Let’s say I have a set of plates and a set of mugs sold to the same person. I wrap up the plates in bubblewrap and cocoon them in cardboard. I then wrap the cocoon in bubblewrap. I do the same to the mugs; bubblewrap, cardboard, bubblewrap. Then, using packing tape, I tape the plate cocoon to the mug cocoon so that they don’t hit against each other when traveling. Then the box with packaging all around.
If I remember the next time I sell a number of fragile items to one buyer, I’ll put together a video.
I had a slow week:
Week of May 26 – Jun 1
* Total Items in Store: 1375, eBay, 3 Etsy
* Items Sold: 13 eBay
* Cost of Items Sold: $10.70 + $8 Commission
* Total Sales: $224.59
* Highest Price Sold: $37 Vintage rocking doll cradle
* Average Price Sold: $17.28
* Returns: 0, but one refund see below
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $5
* Number of items listed this week: 19Things to do list: 3 vintage bar lights (from my death piles) have been rewired and listed!
My highest sold price was actually a typewriter for $42, but the buyer said that it didn’t work when he received it. He wanted the accessories that came with it, so I gave a partial refund.
I enjoyed the new Shampoo & Booze podcast, although I do not rent out anything at this time. Good luck!
06/02/2019 at 8:09 pm in reply to: Study: “What You Need to Know About the Modern Online Shopper” #62835My dad has prime, and I sometimes use his benefits. One thing is Amazon photos. I have the app on my iPhone and use it to back up all my photos including eBay.
The Mercado Libre site is quite interesting. I noticed that the question & answers are shown on the page. Do you have the choice to let the Q&As be shown, or does it do that automatically? With eBay, you have a choice whether or not to show them.
You really do get some good stuff through those auctions.
I found a few matching or similar pieces. The sellers don’t seem to know the answer either.
And I saw your new listing, so you’ve probably seen them as well.
To my untrained eye, my first thought was Korean because their alphabet has that oval in combination with other letters. I looked at the alphabet online, and I don’t see anything with the “#”, but did see the oval. I also didn’t see any “H”s with a higher bar, but I did see something that looks like a “T”.
I also tried drawing with detect language using Google translate on my iPhone. It didn’t seem to find that first letter. It either gave Greek (such as the letter pi) or Chinese (but the letter didn’t match).
Anyway, that’s a long explanation to say that I think it is just someone’s design and not a word. I assume that there are no marks on the bottom?
Possibly, but I could not find any research showing that a two handled cup was a popular thing 100 years ago. But, I updated the title to read “mortar or cup” and modified the description accordingly. Thanks!
If he is still within the 30 day return window, or very close to it, I would go ahead and refund him.
If he is well outside that window, then it is up to you. I haven’t had that situation yet, and I’m unsure what I would do.
Steve – Your video reminds me that I have to sell a keyboard I bought about 10 years ago at a garage sale. I wanted my kids to see if they had any musical interests. They are teenagers now, and neither is playing any instruments.
I bought some silver plate at auction not really paying attention to brand or type. I ended up with a number of items made by Christofle, which is a high-end French brand. These go for $100 and higher, but mine was scratched up and not in the best of shape. I accepted a $75 offer. I paid about $1.50.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183796121064I was inspired by Ryanne from a few months ago as she had listed groups of wooden hangers for reasonably low prices. I had a number of them lying around. I was able to find a dozen, some with hotel names on them, and sold them for $20.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183771842137I keep mentioning my friend who was cleaning out his garage and invited me to grab what I wanted. I wasn’t going to take any of the toys, but this box was still sealed – NOS. It sold for $28 to someone in Australia.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183790413142This brooch was handmade and artist signed. A friend of my parents had bought a bunch of them for gifts, but never gave them out. I had four listed and have been holding on to the rest until a few sold. They’ve been listed since September, and this one is the first to sell. I wonder if I have them priced too high at $18.50.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183423671766This kitchen slicer dicer thing was from the 70s. I purchased it in an online auction for a little less than $3. I have another one still listed. Sold for $20.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183810404257I figured this NWT sports jacket would sell soon. It’s good for spring or summer since it is made of a light weight material. I paid about $1 at a live auction, and it sold for $37.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183758511527I cleaned the mortar to remove the crusty residue. I polished it slightly being careful not to damage it or remove much of the patina. I finally got the listing up last night:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183828733325If you want to check your original listing, do a “sell similar” and see what the shipping comes up with in the new draft.
Then I would call eBay and have them pay for the overage on shipping.
