Yes, I can see global shipping could be an issue. If you see that the buyer is in another country, then modifying the listing would be the better solution. It doesn’t happen that often (at least, not to me), so the few times you might end up with a potential non-sale is no big deal. Just remember to make that copy and keep it in draft!
I’m not aware of eBay having an issue with selling only part of a listing. They do have access to your messages and will consider them for dispute resolution. I see no reason why they wouldn’t look at them as part of a sale.
In the past, I would modify the listing for a request forgetting to make a copy, and then I would be screwed when I created a listing for the stuff that wasn’t sold. When I made a copy, I would then modify the original, and then the customer could purchase it and all was good. But, as you said, occasionally, the listing would end up being unsold.
What I do these days, and perhaps it’s not the best method, is I make an offer in the reply to their request. In the comment field, I’ll specify that the offer is only for the items that they requested and that I’ll refund them any overage on the shipping. So, if they don’t buy, then the listing hasn’t been modified.
In many cases, the buyer believes (or, at least, I think they do) that if I am selling three items for $30, then I will sell them one for $10. But, I take into consideration that I have to create a new listing and potentially take more photos, so I’ll only sell for higher than the $10. So, whatever, they don’t buy, and I’m not out any extra work. At least I gave them the opportunity.
09/06/2019 at 1:44 pm in reply to: MORE EBAY SHIPPING SUPPLY OPTIONS PLUS EASY WAY TO FIND DISCOUNT CODE #67477Yes, I was quite happy with the reintroduction of the 12x10x8. I’m finding that I have gravitated to the priority box 12x12x8 instead; however, someday I’m going to need it for FedEx, and I’ll be happy I have them.

I have a listing for two vintage framed paint-by-number paintings that were listed July 10, 2018, so over a year ago. It has 550 page views and 21 watchers. It is currently 15% off with a sale price of $58.65 and best offer turned on.
For whatever reason, the listing is showing up as “send offers eligible”, but I get an error every time I try to send an offer to watchers. I guess it is some kind of glitch, or perhaps eBay doesn’t allow to send offers on something that has so many watchers.
So, what’s up? I know these types of paint by numbers are very popular. Maybe people are interested, but don’t want to buy it? I don’t know.
I’ve heard that a random blogger might link to a listing, and then that item will get all sorts of views and watchers, but no sale. It would be pretty rare to happen, but it could.
09/04/2019 at 9:37 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Iceland Air Card deck, Telephone Index, 8-Track Stereo, Keens, Advent tweeter #67405I forgot about those address books. I remember seeing them “back in the day”.
I didn’t have any interesting sales to post last week, but I have a few of note this time.
I had bought a vacuum cleaner a few years ago at a garage sale for $5 and came to like it better than the one I had. I used it for a few years, but then the belt kept breaking. I decided to part it out. The lock on the buyer’s handle had broken, so she bought mine for $17. It fit perfectly, and now hers can be used for years longer!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183654453969I recently visited Pittsburgh to visit family and gather some items for commission. A family friend passed away earlier this year, and her husband wants to downsize. I listed this full length mink coat in size 22, and it sold in a few days for $250. That’s probably a small percentage of what she originally paid, but it was pretty high for used fur coats on eBay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183933279108This Asian smoking jacket was given to me by one of my parents’ friends. I don’t know that I’d ever seen one before. Sold for $34.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183932318550I bought an auction lot of mostly men’s coats earlier in the year. Each item came to less than $1. I could tell this one was quality, but it had some condition issues. I sold it for best offer of $25. Hell, I sell clothing in perfect condition for less!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183933185633Last year, I purchased a box lot of silver plate for $10. Over half of it was very old Gorham in a fiddle shape pattern, and most of it sold very quickly. The rest of it was Mappin & Webb in a similar fiddle pattern. Both are quality manufacturers, but this is the first of the M&W to sell. I paid less than $1 for these five teaspoons, and it sold for $30 to someone in Santiago, Chile!

I don’t normally use this function, so I don’t know all the ins and outs of how it works. However, perhaps you can add some words in the body of the description to say that the discount applies to multiple listings.
If you select several orders from the same buyer, then press “shipping”, select “Print shipping labels or invoices”, then “continue”, a shipping page will come up and eBay will ask if you want to combine shipping for the same address/buyer.
If you normally just select “Print shipping label” for a single order, you won’t see this option. Since I usually ship all my sales from the past 24 hours at once, I’ve always been able to use this option. eBay automatically puts in the one tracking number into the different orders.
NOTE: If someone bought more than one item, but used a guest account or different usernames, DO NOT ship those items together. A guest account means someone decided not to make an account on eBay, and each purchase has a different random username. You will not be able to put in the tracking information for the other order(s), and the buyer can say they never received the item. I’m not talking from experience, though, this happened to a different seller on the forum.
Amatino – I bet you do real well with your Le Creuset cookware. That stuff is very expensive. Even when I’ve seen it at auction, it gets bid up much higher than most stuff. I bet it sells fast!
09/01/2019 at 9:37 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 426: Our Financial Lives Are Tied To The Mysterious Whims Of A Website #67223I’ve been able to use classic shipping this whole time. The “Go back to classic label printing” link in the top right corner still works, but only if I have more than one item that I am shipping. I think that you two print out labels one at a time, but I save all my sales from the past 24 hours and print them out all at once.
I agree with you on breaking up sets and selling one to five items at a time. However, I do have two sets that I am selling together. One is a set of vintage china that is not very common. I have it as local pickup only. The other is a set of silver plate flatware from a German brand that is very rare in the US. I had to go to the German eBay site for research. I believe the set was made in the time between WWI and WWII.
Week of Aug 25 – 31
* Total Items in Store: 1444 eBay, 3 Etsy
* Items Sold: 11
* Cost of Items Sold: $8 + about $110 Commission
* Total Sales: $420.49
* Highest Price Sold: $250 Vintage mink full length coat Size 22
* Average Price Sold: $38.23 ($17 w/o the big sale)
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
* Number of items listed this week: 14My numbers this week weren’t too bad because of a big sale of a fur coat. It is on commission, so it isn’t as good as it looks. Still a good sale.
Yes, I would agree with an auction house. She could see ones in her area by looking at current sales at auctionzip.com.
She could set up an online auction. MaxSold is one in my area, but there are others. Again, auctionzip.com would show the online auction companies in her area.
You could arrange a commission agreement for you to sell them on eBay.
She could also sell them on eBay herself, or try a local option like Facebook marketplace.
She could find a dealer who specializes in pop culture to buy out her collection. She probably wouldn’t get the most this way, but it would be gone quickly.
I did not really push much this week. It’s my son’s last full week before school starts, so I didn’t want his week to be boring. I managed 14 new listings. I have lots of photos that he and I did together, but the listings will have to be done this coming week.
With the holiday weekend and my son starting back at school on Thursday, I’m thinking my next big listing week will the Sept 8 week.
Congrats to the Vintage Two 🙂 for your great numbers!
I have some fabric to list myself along with lots of lace trimming. It’s on commission for a family friend. The wife passed away earlier this year, and the husband is downsizing.
It looks like a keychain to me. Like one you could buy at Things Remembered or someplace similar, and they would engrave it with your initials. If it doesn’t open for keys, then I’m not sure.
I don’t normally hit list from the phone, so I can’t really help you from experience. But, I wonder if you check your inventory now if it would be there. Maybe it just took longer?
You should look at sold prices when determining the value of an item. I could list a pencil from the Dollar Store for $999 and no one will stop me. It doesn’t mean that anyone will actually pay that price.
Looking at solds, there are a few outliers, but most are $10 or less. The pricier ones may have the errors.
Agree with the price strategy of pricing high with make offer!
I’ve had to do this in the past, but thankfully it was with media mail, which is a constant price over the US. I’ve called eBay about this at one time, and the CS rep didn’t have a good answer.
I have two very heavy tire rims that can fit into one box, but then I won’t be able to pick it up. I have the listing set as a local pickup.
I’ve thought about what I could do. I could figure out what the total weight would be and then add extra weight to account for the difference in one package vs two. I could also add in a handling charge. I guess you can calculate the cost to different cities and try to use those two methods to where you wouldn’t be out too much. For example, the total weight plus an extra 10 pounds then a $10 handling charge, then see what that would come out to across the US.
If you set it up in that crazy method, I have no idea how eBay would ship it through the GSP. However, Steve Shultz talked about doing this in one of his videos, and it shipped no problem through GSP. When I did more than one box for a set of books, I made it US only.
