All of your AirBnBs look great! I’ve been listening to the Shampoo & Booze podcasts even though I don’t have one. Maybe some day, after we get out of our current house.
I agree with your assessment that sales are strangely consistent. My sales every week in August is about the same amount. Just the number of sales and the average sale price changes.
Week of Aug 11 – 17
* Total Items in Store: 1438 eBay, 3 Etsy
* Items Sold: 13
* Cost of Items Sold: $43.40 + $0 Commission
* Total Sales: $313.05
* Highest Price Sold: $74.65 Duck wildlife painting
* Average Price Sold: $24.08
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $10
* Number of items listed this week: 9This past weekend, I visited a family friend to pick up items he wants to sell. His wife passed away early January. I was already doing commissions for her, so this is just an extension of that. It’s a lot of glass and china, some fabric and jewelry, and two coats. Not terribly exciting.
This summer, I’ve been getting mostly free items and this commission stuff, but I still want to source. That’s the best part of eBay selling, isn’t it? I have a neighbor running a MaxSold auction, and I might bid on some of her items (it won’t be the hour drive to pickup my stuff!). My next auction isn’t until the middle of next month.
So sorry to hear about the back issues, Amatino. I can totally relate. I go to the chiropractor every other week, which I’ve done for the past 10 or more years. This is a genetic issue in my family. My dad had problems when I was growing up, and he had surgery a few years ago.
I also do a set of exercises every morning as prescribed by my chiropractor. I wake up feeling crampy, and the exercises do a world of good. If you are interested, I’ll either describe them or find a link online.
I managed 9 listings last week. I’m not expecting much more this week. Daughter goes to college on Thursday!
Looks like a vintage brass door stop
I had a iPhone 5s and recently purchased a 7+. The issue with rotating photos is now minimized. Occasionally, I get a rotated photo, but not often. When I do notice the issue and repoint vertically, it adjusts properly.
In general, the eBay mobile app is buggy. From what I understand, Apple no longer supports iPhones less than the 7, so the operating system is beginning to lag technology. I hate that you can’t buy an iPhone, a computer, or an iPad and not have it work for 10 years or more.
Steve – That’s a great sale of $1600!! Even the price you paid, the rest is now gravy!
My better sales this week pale in comparison:
This 1973 Coleman propane lamp looked like it was never used. It took about 1.5 years to sell for $27. I bought it in a online auction for a few dollars.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183810124050This casserole sold for $27, and the shipping was $31 to CA. In her feedback, she said that it matches her set. That would be the only reason to spend so much to ship it. I got it for free.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183911735920My biggest sale wasn’t all that big. I bought this bedspread for $1.15 in an online auction, and I sold it for $32.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183864314784Looks like we pressed submit at the same time – yes, quite a trip that would be!
The center of NJ would be an accurate location since I live in pretty much half way up or down in NJ.
Damnit, my response was eaten by the ever constant expiring SL login machine! I’ll just rewrite the whole thing because I forgot to copy it before pressing that damn submit button.
Amatino – Yes, my sales are up, but what is causing the increase? You are asking if the increase is due to the higher listing numbers.
I would estimate that about 25% of my sales are from items I’ve newly listed in the past three weeks. However, my sales are up more than 25%.
One reason is my low listing numbers in July compounded by being on vacation for half that month. This includes two weeks where I had extended shipping.
Another reason is that July sales are traditionally sucky, and folks start back to school shopping in August, so sales in general increase.
Lastly, there’s that algorithm where active accounts get more exposure. I think this is what you are asking; whether eBay is giving me a boost. I can’t really say for sure based on the other factors involved in the timeframe, but I’m sure it has helped. I had a few sales of items in my inventory since 2016, my first year of eBay. Perhaps those were helped by the algorithm? I really don’t know.
On the other topic, you would have quite a trip ahead of you: Oregon, Colorado, NJ. Probably 3000 miles round trip!!
Here is eBay’s policy on military items:
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/military-items-policy?id=4342&st=12&pos=1&query=Military%20items%20policy&intent=military&context=9004_SELLERIf you expand the part “Read our full policy”, then scroll down to “Allowed”, you will see uniforms.
For completeness, here is the police-related items policy:
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/policerelated-items-policy?id=4319I believe it is OK to sell military uniforms if they are vintage. I’ve sold a few in the past, and never had an issue with eBay.
The one issue is police uniforms. If you can prove that they are obsolete or if you can get permission from that police unit, you can resell it. I had a vintage police jacket taken down by eBay once. I didn’t want to do the work to get it back up, so I took the patches and buttons off and sold those.
Great podcast! I really don’t like selling clothes either, but I recently received a very large amount for free. This is my next project to get them listed as quickly as possible. I do have clothes on sale right now, but I may up the percent off to get them moving. I hardly have room for the 6 or so bags of stuff I have to list!!
I’ve been trying to get my average price up. I’ve been somewhat successful, but not nearly as much as I’d like to be. My highest price item is often a home run, but not this week ($32 bedspread).
Week of Aug 4-10
* Total Items in Store: 1439 eBay, 3 Etsy
* Items Sold: 18
* Cost of Items Sold: $20.50 + $8 Commission
* Total Sales: $318.65
* Highest Price Sold: $32 Washington Bedspread
* Average Price Sold: $17.70
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $33
* Number of items listed this week: 51I made the same sales amount as last week, but had to sell four more items to get there. Average price is down. However, I’ve already had two sales this week that are higher than the $32 bedspread, so things are looking up!
I managed, to my amazement, to list 51 items. This is now the third week that I’ve listed about 50.
I’ve been able to get through about 95% of the hard goods that my parents’ friends gave me. Now I need to tackle clothing. I still have some clothes left from auctions a few months ago plus all this stuff from my parents. Maybe 6 or 7 bags plus some stuff hanging up in the laundry room including a bag of ties. I don’t care too much about clothing, and now I’m not going to have enough room to store it all. I’ll need to find spaces in bins and drawers.
Anyway, this week I’ll be on a short trip Thursday through Sunday. I’m still trying to get my daughter ready for college. She moves in on August 22. I don’t expect a 50 item week for at least two weeks, although, clothing can be pretty quick once the photos are taken.

My mom enters sweepstakes, and, about a year ago, she won a free setup of a Facebook business webpage. She gave the prize to me, and I now have a Facebook page for my eBay business.
My idea was to post little blurbs about different items in my store with a link to the item. I’ve been doing it on and off as I see the little reminders come up in my Facebook feed.
So, now I should be promoting it. I get these offers to have the page advertised, but I don’t want to pay the money. What I should be doing is finding different Facebook or website collector groups and pasting my link. So far, all I’ve done is paste the link on the forum here and to some of my family. I’m just not doing what I should be doing if I was going to use this thing correctly.
I’m sure it would help sales if I did advertise. There are YouTubers that get much better sales because people watch their videos and want to buy from them. I just want to list and not spend the time figuring out how to advertise. I let eBay do that stuff. But, I keep posting because maybe someday I’ll do something about it.
If you are interested, here is the link. It’s about time I posted something again.
https://www.facebook.com/UpSmartLLC/I specifically list posters as priority because I don’t want to buy the tubes. I priced them once, and they are too expensive considering the types of posters I have to sell. Needless to say, I don’t sell very many of them.
The cost to ship an item Priority at less than 1 pound is cheaper than 1-2 pound rate. However, it is more expensive than first class. Priority does come with insurance, so there’s that. And, yes, you can’t use the tubes (triangular cylinders?) for anything other than Priority.
For cost, I use eBay’s shipping calculator. There is no easy way to calculate a cost specifically for the tubes, you just put the weight and dimensions in.
08/11/2019 at 2:56 pm in reply to: Does anyone recognize the maker of this cased glass vase? Italian? #66208Since I buy most of my inventory at auction, I often get stuff without any stickers or marks. These items can sit for years instead of months because I’m too honest to say otherwise.
I’ve got these wine glasses that seem to match “Longchamp (Clear) by CRISTAL D’ARQUES-DURAND”. Measurements, design, and all that match, but I’m too honest to label them as that unless I am certain.
