I know to look something up before thinking it is junk, especially if it looks like junk. This vintage step ladder with paint splatter, dirt, and general wear sold for $42. I bought it in an online auction lot with other tools, maybe paid $1.

This is a primitive sculpture that I bought in an online auction with another one (that has already sold) for $5. I had no background on the item, and I didn’t want to make anything up. I described it best I could without saying it was Mayan or Aztec or whatever. It looked old. Sold for $68.

A lady contacted me about whether I would ship a very heavy vintage metal tabletop that I had as local pickup only. I looked up the cost to ship and added additional money to buy a box. She agreed to a $100 shipping cost and full price of $199. She also bought a set of vintage knives, which have the same color scheme as the table. I got both items for free.
The knives have already been shipped. Because of the snow storm earlier this week, I wasn’t able to pickup the boxes for the tabletop until today. I will ship it out this weekend. Her address is in New Orleans.

I bought a bathroom closet full of stuff somewhat because of this MOJO PIK from the 70s. I’ve found so many other valuable items in that closet, but this one was the grooviest! Paid $1 at most, sold for $21.55.

This square tissue box was also from that bathroom closet. This is the third time I’ve sold it, so I hope it sticks. I think “Florentine Style” was what threw people off. Florentine boxes are usually older and made of wood. The “Plastic” in the title and description didn’t seem to set them straight. This time I added in “Shabby Chic” to make it seem less authentic. Sold for $22.
I’m surprised that they are doing away with Parcel because not everyone is willing to use FedEx/UPS.
I use the Parcel Select option to give the buyer a discount on priority shipping. It is very rare that priority isn’t the same price with the eBay discount. However, lately I’ve been making FedEx the main option on anything big or heavy, so I’m really not shipping anything parcel.
GoDaddy is a simple accounting system that does not do inventory. You have to use a much more sophisticated system to be able to add in inventory. I do it the way you mention; I have an Excel spreadsheet for my inventory and add in COGS as items sell.
There are some sellers who add in an item’s cost as a non-business expense or some category that doesn’t affect your numbers. Then, when an item sells, they move the category to cost of goods sold. I don’t do it this way, and it is only good if you don’t have a large inventory. I don’t remember all the details.
Was it two weeks ago when you guys mentioned that you had yet another business for your downtown area? Then today you talk about having time management issues? I realize that your business plans can take a year or two to come to fruition, but you two really do need to think about having an employee or two. Maybe just an assistant that can run errands and small tasks or someone more business savvy. Another eBay helper might be in order as well.

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
Number of items listed this week: 9My total sales are about the same compared to last week, but I sold five less items. My average price is much higher. The nice thing about my highest price sale is that I got it for free! I originally had it for local pickup, but someone in New Orleans was willing to pay $100 to ship it there. Once this snowstorm blows over, I have to drive about 40 min to a box supplier. I will have to combine 2 boxes because they didn’t have one long enough.
Ahhhh … I just listed a few board games yesterday!
PS – I bought one of those small, cheap light boxes that you mentioned in a post somewhere maybe a year ago. I found that I can take photos on top of the dining room table without any special lighting. I use it for jewelry and very small items.
I had a light week as well with 9. I had too many non-eBay related stuff going on. I have eBay and a part time job, but then there’s the family thing.
My total for the death piles is 3. I did start working on the one I pulled from the garage, but didn’t get that far.
@Amatino – Your setup is incredible! Just having something outside the house is very cool, but then your space is super nice and large. I know you’ve mentioned your perfectionism/OCD when it comes to photography, but I found the diffuser to be unhelpful because I want as much light as possible. I stopped using the third light that goes in front of the item because I kept tripping over it and having to replace the broken bulb. Those bulbs aren’t cheap. I’m sure you can figure it out, though.Wow, that is much better than I thought. Perhaps I should go back and polish mine (and then retake photos). I have a set of five.
I’d like to piggyback off this post for a Worthpoint price. I have a set of shot glasses that have the same markings as the first listing and the same design as the second listing.
Can I get the price and date for each?

(The seller describes the design as a lady passing by a window, but it looks like a garbage can or R2D2 to me.)
Thanks!

I wouldn’t have known what this item was except that the original owner had a sticker “Amish bed warmer” on it. It was bought with a bunch of other stuff, so cost about $1 and sold for best offer of $20.

One of my commission sales; a very nice mid-century metal bud vase, artist made. Sold for $56.

This was mentioned a month or two ago, but you can sell an old, unused calendar by saying when it will repeat again. This Tutankhamun calendar put out by the MET in 1977 will repeat next year. Not a huge sale; just interesting. Paid maybe $0.50, sold for $10.67 on sale.

Set of antique Tiffany plates, in stained condition, sold for best offer of $45. Bought at an auction about two years ago for around $4 as part of a larger purchase.

Just a few hours after I listed three Realistic CB radios, a buyer asked whether I would take $45 for all three. I said that it was too soon for negotiation, and he should contact me in about a month. Less than two weeks later, all three sold to a different buyer at full price (about $63 total). The original buyer sent me a congratulations message, so he was still following them. They were purchased with other vintage electronics, and cost less than $1 each. Here’s the listing for one:

Another commission sale; a Sajen brooch in the shape of a frog. This family friend had a huge collection of these Sajen pins, all in sterling with gems; kind of an expensive hobby. This was probably the most expensive one I’ve sold to date for $139.
I’ve never had such a thing happen. You might want to call up customer service on this one.
@Amatino –
I am totally jealous that you have a separate building just for eBay. I remember all the photos you posted during the construction and after final completion.
I want to know if you have a background for your items, or do you just photograph against the wood surface?
I noticed this message in my feedback page today “You can find the item’s listing details next to each feedback you’ve received. Details for private listings or items you purchased are hidden from visitors to your Feedback profile.”. Does this make sense? If I go to some other buyer’s feedback, I can see the feedback he left for others. I think buyers can see mine. Am I misinterpreting it incorrectly?
I used Gixen for the first time this week to make sure that I would win some matching pieces to my dish set. Not that it was going to be a popular item or that I really needed to snipe it, but I didn’t want to have to worry about timing or calling attention by putting in an earlier bid. I was just the second bidder with a bid $0.50 above the first.

I brought another item up with those ties, so I’m holding off my celebration of completing another death pile at this point.
Whoot Whoot! Also, I’m glad I’m not the only one 🙂
