There have been two times in the recent past where we’ve bought something from Amazon, and they told us to keep it. Both times, I’ve sold the item. One was a damaged lazy susan, which was still usable. And the other (which was only a month or two ago) was a furnace filter pack where they sent us the wrong one. We ended up repurchasing it from a totally different site.
Both were Amazon sellers, and not Amazon itself.
Gotcha, Amatino. I think you once had a challenge where the death piles had to be around a year old, but I can work with this better (not that I don’t have stuff older than a year 🙂 ).
I also want to thank Amatino for my challenge gift I received yesterday! This will be great for future online auction pickups. It might not show so well on the photo, but the ends of the shoes and hat are little balls! So cute!
01/11/2021 at 3:46 pm in reply to: Buyer reqts return claiming item not authentic but is also auctioning the item #85105The shipping label is specifically for your address. She cannot use it to send it somewhere else. My guess is that she is hedging her bets so that, if the curtain doesn’t sell on auction, she can ship it back and get her refund.
There is always the possibility that she is planning to ship something back that isn’t the item you sent her.
I would copy the item number of her auction and save that link just in case. Then, report her to eBay. Even if her auction doesn’t end up in a sale and she sends back the item, what she is doing is not right.
01/11/2021 at 2:16 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 496: Can Your Business Run Without You? #85096I sold a large number of items this week, but they were mostly lower cost. I expect that people are spending those $25 gift cards they received during the holidays.
Week of Jan 3 – 9
Total Items in Store: 1441 eBay, 27 Etsy
Items Sold: 29 eBay
Cost of Items Sold: $80 + $21.80 Commission
Total Sales: $463 eBay
Highest Price Sold: $59 for 2 sets new Charles Heidsieck ice bucket + empty champagne bottle
Average price: $16
Returns: 0
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
Number of items listed this week: 18My high COGS are due to the two ice bucket & empty champagne bottle combos I sold. I paid way too much for them, about $20 each, during my first or second year of selling on eBay. Glad they’re gone, though.
Yes, this is something that is frustrating with eBay. I buy my labels using the bulk shipping page, so all the label costs get combined into one price. If you buy your labels one at a time, you can find the email for when you bought the label off eBay.
If you can’t find it, do you remember the dimensions and weight of the box you shipped? You can put that information into eBay’s shipping calculator with your and your buyer’s zip codes, and then you will have what the cost would have been.

Then, print out the tracking information into a PDF file. The fact that it shows a package sent priority mail means that it was insured. I suggest using the USPS tracking rather than what you see on eBay. Just cut and past the tracking information into goggle, click track package, then “View details on USPS”. The tracking information there is the most detailed, and the product information will say that it was sent priority.
18 new listings.
I have three vintage Realistic CB radios (untested) to list, and then I will have completed one death pile box.
Is there an age limit for a pile to be considered a death pile?
You need to go to USPS.com, Help menu, and then File a Claim. Not sure, but they might want you to file a missing package first.

I wouldn’t get them a subscription like the Bark Box, but cats are much different than dogs. They really aren’t into playing like they were when they were kittens. Also, they puke often, so a variety of snacks wouldn’t be a good thing for them. Anyway …
I posted a few weeks ago asking about how to ship a mercury thermometer. Temudgin pointed me in the direction of FedEx, which does allow you to ship mercury that is contained within a manufactured item. I sold the first one last week, and the buyer did not want me to post feedback for him. I guess he doesn’t want his environmentalist friends to find out? I’m very concerned about the environment myself, but I totally understand the conundrum. Digital thermometers just don’t work as well. Anyway, paid hardly anything in an online auction, sold for $24.

Something looks not that nice in an auction, and no one wants it. You throw out the shade and dust it off, and voila, $70.

I bought an online auction lot of tools. At the bottom of one of the boxes was a bunch of calligraphy tips. Paid about $1, sold for $26.

Many online auctions would do better with books if they did the research and pointed out the good ones. But, then I wouldn’t find these gems like a newly translated first edition One Hundred Years of Solitude from 1970. I paid pennies considering my low bid and large number of books, sold for $50.

I’ve had this jacket for about two years. It had a Japanese hotel tag. I assumed it was something that would have been sold at the hotel gift shop, but my buyer’s feedback set the record straight:
It is a really nice uniform top made in the 1950’s Very authentic & nice.
That said, I looked up other hotel uniforms, and my price was about right at $26. Paid maybe $1.

Another item from the same auction lot as the thermometers is this hair dryer from the 1950s. This person really didn’t throw anything out.
Look! I’m not the only one who is trying to park their car in the garage!!
I also sell on commission for a family friend. For your cost of goods sold, you use the amount that you give to your parents.
My commission is 50% of a sale. Let’s say I sell something on commission for $20. I first subtract off the eBay fees, which is usually $0.30 plus 12.35% for a premium store. For a $20 sale, that leaves $17.23. Rounding down the numbers, half goes to me ($8.61), and the other half to the original owner ($8.61). The $8.61 to the original owner is my COGS.
I hope that makes sense.
Was my goal 20 last year? I think I will stick with that.
01/05/2021 at 5:46 pm in reply to: Is Your eBay seller protections monthly summary messed up? #84958I just sent a message to eBay for Business on Facebook. I would think that they would know about this, but I sent it anyway.
Week of Dec 27 – Jan 2
Total Items in Store: 1450 eBay, 27 Etsy
Items Sold: 22 eBay
Cost of Items Sold: $38.98 + $8.15 Commission
Total Sales: $436.53 eBay
Highest Price Sold: $70 Copper & brass tone table lamp
Average price: $19.84
Returns: 0
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
Number of items listed this week: 19Lower average price but more items and less commission sales, so it was better than last week. My highest sale was also a large item, so I’m happy to move that out.
In November, I found a quiet period in auction sales where I was able to buy some large lots at very good prices. I’m still overwhelmed with all of that stuff. I’m glad to see auctions going high right now while I can focus on listing. Yes, sourcing is the fun part, but I have to cut back for a while.
Anyway, I listed 19 items last week.
I moved one deathpile box from the garage into the house, and it is almost empty. I’ve got another one to move in, so hopefully I will report on both of them next week.
