You can’t. That is why free shipping is not recommended by many sellers on this forum.
One thought is to offer a small percent off, say 5 or 10% where you would still be comfortable with included shipping. Then, if someone makes a counteroffer, you will be able to see where they are located. However, that person might be buying the item for someone else, and they might want it shipped to a different address. So, you would have to make a condition on the offer to ship to their location.
Another thought (for the future) is to change your listings so that shipping is extra.
12/27/2020 at 1:37 pm in reply to: Can you ship a vintage thermometer with small amount of mercury #84634Excellent, and thank-you for that help! I will be in the business of vintage thermometers shortly 🙂
When my children were young, the doctor would want to know their temperatures very accurately. The digital thermometers at that time were not that great. In addition, the battery would die eventually, and I wouldn’t have a replacement on hand.
So, I switched back to the mercury thermometers I had from “back in the day” and just made sure that my kids didn’t bite down. No problems with batteries or inaccuracies. Nowadays, the newer digital thermometers are better, but I’m keeping my mercury ones on hand.
12/27/2020 at 12:14 pm in reply to: Can you ship a vintage thermometer with small amount of mercury #84629From my research, a vintage thermometer would have more mercury than the 100 mg that the post office allows.
I researched the FedEx site, and I found on the bottom of page 87 at the link below is “Not accepted unless contained in a device and the package does not exceed 1 lb. (0.454 kg) of Mercury”.
https://www.fedex.com/content/dam/fedex/us-united-states/services/HazmatShippingTable.pdf
The weight of one thermometer is less than 5g, and it is contained in a device, so I think I’m good.
What I couldn’t find is the correct method of marking the package. I might call FedEx tomorrow and ask. Does anyone know where I can find that information?
12/26/2020 at 9:05 pm in reply to: Can you ship a vintage thermometer with small amount of mercury #84622Yes, it definitely has to go ground shipping. The package has to be marked appropriately.
My longest delay (still not delivered) was shipped Dec 2, tracked when leaving NJ on the 6th, then finally a scan in MI on the 23rd. Still not delivered, and it is a Christmas item. It’s a bit pricey, so I want the item back before I refund.
I have an area rug that was shipped out on Dec 10, and, other than the acceptance scan, nothing.
I just accept the return and let the buyer get the label from eBay.
I think the idea is if you have a discount from the USPS that is better than eBay or if you want the buyer to use FedEx or UPS, then you have the opportunity to send your own.
Usually, eBay provides the buyer with a label and takes the money out of your funds. The only time I’ve heard where the seller has to buy a label is when the buyer is outside of the US.
Is your buyer international? If so, you either have to go to their country’s post office website and figure out how to buy one, or you tell the buyer to buy his/her own label, and send you a photo of the receipt. Then you pay the price of the label when you receive the returned item back. At least, that is what I’ve read about an international return.
Hum, in that case, you might have to cancel the sale and ask your buyer to repurchase with the correct address. Another thought is to buy the label directly on the UPS site (you might pay more), and then copy and paste in the tracking number to the eBay sale.
I don’t normally use UPS, but, when I use FedEx, I don’t get charged for the label until I use it. I’m pretty sure UPS is similar. So, if you print out a label, don’t use it, and then print out a second one, you should only be charged for the one you use.
Google it to be sure.
12/21/2020 at 6:25 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 493: eBay Helping Buyers Understand Shipping Delays #84536I have a few delayed items, and I’m getting updated tracking for all but one. The one item is stuck in Michigan, and the buyer is not being patient (it’s also a Christmas themed item, so I get it). If I lose that one, I might have to pay the $15 to reroute the item back to me as it did have an $89 price tag.
I recently received an email from an international buyer wondering where his item was. He bought a book in May, but never paid for it. So, I agree, some of the NPB are those who don’t realize that they didn’t pay and they don’t check their email much.
Before the pandemic happened, I had an insurance case where the post office told me that I had to bring the item into a post office for inspection. Although I had already refunded the buyer, they did take it into the PO, but were denied because they had thrown out the packaging. So, yes, the post office is pushing back on insurance claims.
For a packing slip, I use the bulk shipping tool, and then print out the “picking list”. I cut up the list to make small packing slips. I use those to match the item with the label, and then throw it in the package before taping up. It has the item, the price, and the address. I always write “Thanks, Sharyn” on it for a personal touch.

Number of items listed this week: 29I had a really good week, but it was mostly due to several items on commission, so my COGS are high as well. I have one family friend that I sell for.
12/21/2020 at 2:07 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 493: eBay Helping Buyers Understand Shipping Delays #84526@Doublythumbs – Funny you mention the Kensington ware. I received a bunch of this stuff from my one consignor and listed it over a year ago. My first sale was in July, and I just had the second one yesterday. I have four to go. So, yes, not big sellers.
I think that the hammered aluminum look sells better.
Because of the snow storm that happened last week, I tried to get my garage clear so that I could actually park in there. No such luck, but I ended up listing most of the books I recently purchased in an online auction. I thought that would reduce the number of items in this month’s challenge, but I found two books based on US history that can be considered patriotic. Those two plus a blue item adds 3 to the challenge.
I listed 29 items in total.
Amatino – In looking at your poll, my May challenge of putting dead stock on auction really isn’t applicable anymore. The new rules allowing a huge number of items in the collectable category means that I’m not up against the 1000 items included in a premium store any more. I’ve been marking items I want to get rid of, and I’ll give them away in our town’s next freecycling event. Anyway, I had some good buys in November before the holiday frenzy started, so I voted for anything having to do with listing large items or moving death piles. I gotta stop sourcing and organize!!!
I’ve found that the bulk shipping tool works pretty consistently. Select the items you want to ship, pull down the shipping menu, select “Print shipping labels or invoices”, and then click continue. You can then adjust all the weights and box sizes, and then buy the labels when you are ready.
Maybe it is a holder for kitchen utensils, but I couldn’t find anything online.
No idea on the ceramic thing.
