Antique Frog – Not exactly. I should have mentioned that it is electrical. See the link below – this is similar to what I have.
I’ve got a long list of the items in my death piles. No photos yet. I’m actually working on some of them this week, so I’m hyped about it at the moment.
Sorry for the long post, but here is the list. I’ll number them so that I can keep track:
1) 5 Office electric typewriters: Need testing – I actually started on two of them today! I may need to buy ink cartridges and power cords.
2) Facit manual typewriter: I was going to sell this as nonworking, but my husband convinced me to fix it. I’ll give it a shot.
3) Food grinder – This is some kind of very heavy food grinder for Indian food. It needs to be tested.
4) misaligned art – a 3-D type art piece where the tape on one side has lost its stickiness, so the art is lopsided. I’ve got acid free tape and all the supplies I need.
5) 3 vintage bar lights – they were nonworking, and I decided that I need to replace the light fixtures in back. I believe they are worth the cost, but I’m wondering about the time. I’ve actually made some progress on this today.
6) a stack of vinyl records – I don’t even know if they are desirable, but I finally got a record player to test them.
7) a stack of CDs – I don’t seem to do well with selling old CDs, so I’m not sure that they are worth it.
8) a number of electric razors and hair trimmers – need to find out if they are worth anything, and, if they are, they’ll need to be tested.
9) Vintage table – do I have a box big enough or do I do local pickup? Just been lazy on this one.
10) 3 vintage cameras – my daughter will be happy to test them for me, but I first need to make sure they power on. I’ll need to find the right battery and buy film. One is only worth $30 or so; perhaps I just list that one untested. The last one is new and sealed. They also came with expired film that apparently does sell.
11) Several vintage men’s digital watches – I put batteries in them, but don’t know how to set the time to check if they work. I need to download instructions. Also have a newer watch that needs repair to the band or list as-is.
12) 2 power controllers & 1 data switch – something used in a computer room where many electronics need to be connected. Are they worth anything? How do I test?
13) Art projector – it didn’t work well when I first tested it. I thought it might just need cleaning or a new bulb, but I haven’t done anything. Is it worth it?
14) My dad’s old stereo receiver – holy cow, it has so many component connections, how do I test it? Am I too lazy?
15) Other of my dad’s old electronic equipment – I don’t even know what some of this is.
16) Matching bisque figurines – they were modified to be used with lamps by filling in the bottoms with cement or something. There is a screw that won’t come out. Do I chip it out? Sell as-is?
Items needing more extensive researching than what is easily available online:
17) possible Chatty Kathy doll – not marked, but my family friends used to be in the doll business, and it might be a prototype. It does have Chatty Kathy clothing.
18) China pieces, might be Sevres, couldn’t find the exact hallmark online, one piece is unmarked
buytikiselltiki – Looks like you are trying to fix your broken link. If you go to your post on imgur, there should be a “copy” button on the right hand side with the link. If you press copy, it saves the link to your clipboard. Then you can just paste here.
I think that if you add other photos, then the eBay photo goes away. So, they assume that if you add photos then your item must be used.
I think that this is part of their catalog. If you have an item that is NIB and is a relatively new item, then they have a stock photo that can represent all the ones for sale that are the same item.
When I list a recent book, sometimes eBay will insert a photo of the front cover. This is really nice for books that are new or like new.
I haven’t really seen a photo pop up for something other than a book, but I don’t list that many new in the box items.
I’ll be interested in the photo that eBay added for the GI Joe.

The reason I know about the data use is because she lost her phone for about a week, and I checked our account to see if someone was using it (if it had been stolen). All I saw was that midnight activity. She had the phone on vibrate, so that is why she couldn’t just call and listen for it. Ends up it fell behind a box, and she found it right before I was about to bring her old, cheap Moto G back to life.
01/22/2019 at 10:48 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 395: What Lifestyle Is eBay Supporting For You? #55574Yes, Consumer Cellular has that. We’ve gone to the higher data plan, rather than down, even though I use wifi whenever I can. I could blame it on my teenage daughter, but, frankly, I’ve gotten used to checking my emails and (I hate to admit it) Facebook when I’m out of the house.
That reminds me – looking at our account usage, I found that my daughter’s phone uses a chunk of data every night at midnight. I have to find out what is happening there.
Oh, yeh, maybe I can blame it on her!
BTW, Consumer Reports rates cellular service providers. Every year, both Consumer Cellular & Ting are in the top three. I just checked, and the current lineup (from #1 to 3) is Consumer Cellular, Project Fi (Google), and Ting.
01/22/2019 at 9:10 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 395: What Lifestyle Is eBay Supporting For You? #55561Ah, yes, now I remember. At the time, the CSR at Ting told us that they were planning on adding T-mobile at a future date, but they couldn’t give us an exact date. So, we signed with Consumer Cellular and have been pretty happy with them. We can consider changing if we ever become unhappy with our service, but we are good for now.
You guys have two lines for $50; we have three lines for about $57.50 (with all the taxes and whatnot).

Re lifestyle: About four years ago, I was laid off from my job because my company moved to another state. I wasn’t able to find a job in my line of work that was within a reasonable commute. That’s when I started selling on eBay. My profits prevent us from having to sell our house and buy something with a lower mortgage. My husband still has his job, so we have insurance and a steady income.
Re cell phone company: For whatever reason, Sprint does not have coverage over my neighborhood, so we were unable to sign up with Ting. We ended signing up with Consumer Cellular, which uses T-mobile. We have three phones, and our bill is usually a little less than $60.
Re remotes: I hadn’t used our VCR for a while, but I needed to test a VHS tape recently. I had the issue with the batteries messing up the remote. I didn’t know to clean it up as you mentioned in the podcast, but now I’ll have to try that out. In the meantime, I bought a new one off eBay for $6 plus shipping.
Anyway, my numbers:
Week of Jan 13-19
* Total Items in Store: 1320 eBay, 10 Mercari
* Items Sold: 12 eBay
* Cost of Items Sold: $8.10 + $0 Commission
* Total Sales: $253.39
* Highest Price Sold: $79 Pilates Pro Chair
* Average Price Sold: $21.11
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
* Number of items listed this week: 38Things to do list: I want to track my progress against my to do list just to keep myself motivated. Last week, I should have mentioned that I organized my bookmarks. Not a big deal, but it did take an hour or two.
This week, I took six pieces of handmade stoneware made by the same artist and lotted them up into two listings. These are new items that I feel are nice enough, but haven’t sold yet. I have a few other categories where I want to do this. On the other hand, I had four belts in the same size from a purchase over two years ago, but two of them have sold in the past month. So, I crossed that off my list.
The last thing I did this week was to create a listing for a multipack of labels that I purchased in quantity over a year ago. I have them listed separately by type, and NONE of them have sold. I’m very close to just getting rid of them. I’ll give this listing enough time to see if this multipack will sell; otherwise, I’ll be cutting my losses.
01/21/2019 at 3:42 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 395: What Lifestyle Is eBay Supporting For You? #55533Sorry to hear about your experience, Mike. I’m assuming that the manager did not have any idea that the employee is doing this, and I hope that they take action. I don’t do much with my local Goodwill either. There is a church thrift store in the area, and I can just drop stuff on their porch when they aren’t open.
I listed 38 items this week.
I have not been buying inventory this month. I’ve passed up on all the online auctions, my area doesn’t have found many garage or rummage sales during the cold months, and I haven’t been able to get to the live auctions so far. So, I’m hoping I can spend time this week and next working on death piles. Maybe the death pile challenge will help?
Either way, the next auctions are Jan 31, Feb 7, and Feb 8, so I need to make some progress or I will be putting stuff off yet again!
I just listed a bunch of stuff today, and I didn’t see any of that. However, I always start from an existing listing and modify it.
When I first started, I used the simpler method of creating a listing. Sorry, I don’t remember what it was called. Later, I switched to the method that allows you to modify more parameters. I wonder if you are using the simpler listing screen.
How did the post office know? Did they inspect it?
Steve – You had a great idea to combine the shade from one lamp with the base of another. This is exactly why people pass up on great items. They don’t think creatively about parsing something out or combining parts from different pieces.
If things stay as they are now, I won’t have much to talk about next week. However, I have some good sales to talk about from last week:
I purchased this photo of Michele Kwan, which is signed by the sports photographer Walter Iooss, in an online auction for about $0.25. Initially, I assumed that the signature was of the skater and couldn’t figure it out. I posted some photos to the forum here, and the great trash elves of Scavenger Life figured it out for me! Sold for best offer of $40.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183285389159At a live auction, I purchased a number of boxes at the minimum bid of $5. One box had Christmas stuff including a bunch of small wooden ornaments. I listed them as one lot, which sold for $23. The cost was $0.50.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183531524291This ceramic 1940s rooster pitcher cost $1 when I purchased the contents of two kitchen cabinets in an online auction. Sold for $23.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183492936393I purchased this menorah in December at an online auction for $1. The candle holder is nothing like I had ever seen. Regular candles don’t work with it. Perhaps the rolled up beeswax candles would work? Anyway, I googled in something like “menorah with spikes”, and it did not take me long to find it. It was made by an Israeli artist who passed away in the 60s, and its style is called brutalist. I found an online auction where it sold for $150, so I listed it for $179 or best offer. A $125 offer came in about an hour later from a shop in NY. The interesting thing is that I bought a different brutalist style menorah during the summer, and it also sold quickly for good money. I guess brutalist style menorahs are something to look out for!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183628514988My mother enters sweepstakes as a hobby and will sometimes give me things she wins. These goggles for snowboarding sold for $68 to someone in Israel. I think there is a mountain in Israel that has snow, or maybe he is going on a vacation.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183622765232My daughter got into something called pen spinning when she was in middle school. I guess it’s more of an Asian sport. The sport consists of spinning pens with one hand and doing tricks. For about a year, all she wanted for gifts were parts of these pens that she would put together and make different forms. I don’t even want to talk about how much money we spent on pen parts! She’s a senior in high school now, so I took what was left and sold it for $12.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183386858664This isn’t particularly interesting, but I purchased this unused vintage knife set for $2 when I was still new to eBay selling. The photos were not great, so I retook them last year. It finally sold for $13.50. I also sold another set a few weeks ago. Not sure why there is a sudden interest in vintage knife sets, or maybe it is just coincidence.

Sharyn. Reason: googles, goggles, what's the difference?!
Gotcha. I will tape two boxes together in order to get the height I need, but then the boxes aren’t as sturdy. Depends on whether you feel the item needs an un-compromised box or not.
