So Saturday morning I went out with my wife to early bird from 7:40 until 9. Then we went back out from 10:30-12:30 to finish the second of my normal loops.
Again, the early sales had TONS of amazing things. I cleaned up!
Here is a quick list of the big hits. I’ll get all this listed this week.
- 3 Womens Harley davidson armored riding jackets and a pair of boots for $40 (worth $250+ total)
- A Taekwondo duffel bag full of gear for $10 (worth $75)
- A GIANT set of Denby England Dinnerware for $100. Comps in the same pattern were $10-20 per piece depending on how it is sold. I believe it is about 80 pieces. It’s a pipeline that will take years to sell, but easy to list since every item is a quantity listing.
- Xbox 360 complete mint in box for $20 (worth $125)
- PS2 slim with 6 games for $20 (worth $100)
- Guitar hero fender guitar free as throw-in with pile (worth $50)
- Gaming computer components in original boxes for $15 (worth $200)
- Walking Dead paperback volume set for $5 (worth $40-50)
- Star Wars Millenium Falcon with figures for $15. It was yellowed so I was freaking out thinking it was the original as I walked up. Nope – 2004 reissue. I may part this out due to the yellowing. (Worth $50-75 as is with figs. Would be worth more parted out.)
- Garmin Etrex handheld GPS for $1 (worth $50)
- Case logic 60 cassette case PACKED with awesome 80’s/90’s rock for $2 (worth $100 as a lot, $35 just the case)
The later sales for the most part stunk, with a few decent things here and there. So…would the later sales been amazing if I went early? Would all the things I bought at the early sales have been gone if I went later? I think it is a mix of both. The video game stuff and star wars stuff would have definitely been gone.
Now aside from the yard sale stuff, we made our regular stop at goodwill yesterday. I scored 2 pair of high end mens dress shoes. One was Mezlan, the other was Bruno…something… Either way, both will sell north of $100. My kids scored their best item so far for their summer ebay sale – an Axe softball bat for $7 – (worth $60-80). I actually bought one of these to hold onto for my youngest daughter at a yard sale last week for $30.
So regarding that listing for the sketch. How did you even know what that was??? It amazes me that you have a knowledge base to find all the poorly created listings that are worth much more.
That’s a cool sale! My favorite scavenges/sales are many times the oddball items that catch my eye and I just know someone would want it and pay good money even though I have no verifiable data to back my gut feeling.

I picked up this shriner hat last weekend for $5. I had a buyer send me an offer on the box only for $24. Sold! I redid the listing and edited out the box and immediately sold the hat as well for $30.

One of the pair of $100+ shoes I had forgot about. I listed them this morning for $200 – shooting for the moon. Sent an offer of $175. Got a counter for $100. I went ahead and took it – no need to be greedy. $100 is still higher than any other comp in terapeak, and I was actually going to list it at $99.99 before changing my mind.
Sold in less than 2 hours.
If you ever see an old pair of dress shoes with that v-nail on the sole – that is a BOLO.

It think there is 2-3 more pair of shoes in the $100 range. A cricut machine worth around $75 with all the accessories it came with. A serger sewing machine – $125. A shower hydromassage thing new in box that is worth about $75 (bummer – I was hoping it was worth more). A jeep OEM radio, $75-100. Ralph lauren jeans worth $100. NiB TMNT dress up toy that I’m listing for $100 that will sell in christmas season.
I’ve sold so many OEM cd/cassette car radios over the years for $100+. It’s almost always a dealer that buys them. I look up the wiring diagrams so I can put power to them on a test bench and test out the cassette and CD players to list as 100% functional to get top dollar.
I’m at the min 2% and will stay there. I also only add new listings to promoted listings 3-4 times a year. The suggested ad rates are hilarious. While I am listing 1000 items this summer, I won’t add any of them to promoted listings until fall.
The mere fact that the entity that is benefiting from the ad rates is setting the recommendations is preposterous! Why would anyone follow those recommendations? I’d love to see a test to see if you raised your prices 20% across the board and then set a 20% max promoted listing fee if it caused a noticable uptick in sales. For stuff I sell I highly doubt it.

I always pick up Kobe stuff so I knew this would be worth at least $20-30. Clearly it’s worth a bit more than that. Not bad for $1 at a yard sale.

Instead of reporting weekly numbers I’ll just post the cumulative summary numbers table above each week so you can see how their store grows and performs. They can only buy new inventory with their available balance. The available balance is their profit + the initial $20, which they have already earned back in sales. Withdrawals will be for purchasing inventory only. We decided that they can’t pull any money out for themselves until the end of summer. Listing 2023 weekly Avg 20Well this was a busy week! I kicked off my summer listing spree, helped my older kids launch their summer ebay selling gig, and STILL had a full slate of baseball playoff games. I leveraged every spare minute I had during my day job work day to make it happen – breaks, lunch, a bit before leaving for work if I was up early.
I was able to get some great items at yard sales Friday and Saturday. I even scored some high dollar items at Goodwill. My numbers were heavily skewed with one big $800 sale, but my items sold was way up. Hopefully that trend continues this summer.
Last summer I listed 620 items and sold 342 items for $10343. I had roughly the same size store then.
The summer of 2020 (which is an anomaly year), I listed 191 items, and sold 370 items for $13533
With a goal of 77 new listings a week and a good portion of them being higher dollar, I hope to crush both of those sets of numbers by the end of summer. Let’s gooooo!

I spoke about this one a few weeks ago in scavenge of the week. I waited to list it while I tested the battery. Initially the battery was dead. I was able to ‘jump’ the battery with another battery to get the charger to recognized it. I had to run it through a few full charge and drain cycles to get the battery to surpass 45 minutes of run time. That was good enough. Sold for full price within 3 days.

Listing 2023 weekly Avg 17Well this HAS to be rock bottom, right? I knew it was a slow week, but DANG!!!!
Oh well, this week starts my summer challenge – 13 weeks and 1000 listings. If that doesn’t get my store a-rockin then I might as well quit. I got off to a good start and posted 7 listings this morning. I have to average 77 a week.
In other news, I kicked off a special summer project with my oldest 2 kids yesterday. We were at a shopping center and my kids found a $20 laying on the ground in the parking lot. They of course wanted to blow it immediately. At some point during the walk my wife brought up the idea that they could try a form of the paperclip challenge. How far can they take that found $20 in one summer? I offered up my ebay expertise to help them start selling. Initially they were hesitant as they REALLY wanted to frivolously blow that $20. Finally I convinced them that if they played their cards right they’d pretty quickly have that $20 back, plus plenty more.
So off we went to goodwill with their $20. It was the perfect day for this goodwill as they do a double tag 99 cent sale on clothing for memorial weekend. I coached them to focus on in-season mens clothes – mainly golfing fashion mall brands and athleisure for womens clothes. They would pull the clothes, bring them over to me and I’d coach them to check for flaws and give advice on what was more desirable and what wasn’t going to sell quickly.
I also threw them a bone and let them have an apple wired aluminum keyboard I found that was $3.
I considered starting a new store just for them, but for this summer it will be much easier just to use my store. I gave them a single dedicated bin to store their stuff – the bin is called “2 broke homeschoolers”. My wife thought it would be awesome if they started a youtube channel to document their journey but they…”don’t want to dilute their future brand of being video game youtube stars”. So no youtube channel…for now.
So we got home and I helped them create an excel spreadsheet to track their inventory, COGS, sales, and profit (nerds gotta nerd!). I gotta say, seeing my 12 year old son happily entering data into excel was a proud father moment.
Next I showed them how to research and leverage the sell similar tactic to simplify listing. We discussed pricing strategy so that they don’t leave too much meat on the bone but also have try to ensure a quick sale. So far they have created 8 listings with a combined list price of $160. They are so pumped and excited. Today we’ll finish up the listings and they can take their photos so the listings can go live.
These 2 kids are best friends and work together very well. I have a feeling that this will work out quite well for them. I’m thinking that I’ll let them post their weekly numbers as well here starting next week.
