I’ve remained diligent about no unnecessary scavenging lately so everything I bought last week (and there really wasn’t much) was online. Still found a few nice items to contribute to the thread.
First is another lot of South American soccer cards — 1960s matchbooks this time, and my third or fourth lot of vintage Spanish cards in a month. At less than $1 each, these will never make it to my eBay store, but I’ll make a nice profit selling them in my consignment port at $5 to $10 each. Very few listed for sale anywhere, so there’s always a chance this purchase will bust, but I’m not going to lose much sleep over $30.
Potentially more interesting is this Lou Gehrig Type 1 photograph for about $40. My knowledge of vintage sports photography is not great, but I’m trying to learn as there is some real money in high end authenticated photography, like almost every other type of memorabilia and collectible. I want to do some more research before I figure what my best path to selling this photo is. The listing says type 1 but maybe it’s a lesser quality type 2 or 3. I really can’t tell from the listing. I will likely end up submitting the photo to PSA for a letter of authenticity, like the LOA which accompanies this Walter Camp type 1 photo which I won for about $20.
I will list the Camp photo in the $100-$200 range, he is known as the “Father of American Football” and some deep pocketed football history collector will want it. That sale will cover the cost of both photos plus whatever extra costs I accumulate from getting the Gehrig photo authenticated. Sold listings for PSA authenticated type 1 Lou Gehrig photos are all over the place, with many sales $500 and up. It’s fun to find items like this. Amazing what $40 can get you.
What did you find this week?

You ever had a dream where you went to a yard sale and it was PACKED with the most amazing stuff and it was all cheap?
I’ve had those dreams too…but this weekend I got to experience it in REAL LIFE!!!
NWT Ralph Lauren mens stuff as far as the eye can see – some purple label. A NWT coogi sweater. Other designer brands – NWT.
One item I missed (possibly) was one I was hoping to find – a Ralph Lauren bear sweater. I saw it as I was paying. The wife running the sale was holding it for her neighbor. She said she’d give it to me next week if the neighbor changes her mind. Oh, and it was NWT of course!!
it was all real – there were receipts and store bags for the higher end stuff. I got a tour of the garage stuff that wasn’t for sale yet – shoe boxes of $300-1000+ men’s shoes 5 deep and 5 tall new in box .
I bought over 75 clothing items for $615. I don’t even know what I have quite yet, but I’d estimate the value of what I got is at least $4k, possibly much more.
I used to work with the guy who was doing the sale. The stuff is from a relative that passed. And older man who had obscene amounts of money and was addicted to buying clothes/shoes and jewelry. They are looking to offload everything if possible. The crazy part – what I saw is only about 10% of what is available!!! Everything else is at another house that is packed full.
they took the jewelry collection to a jeweler and offloaded everything for $70k. I bet that jeweler took them to the cleaners.
Anyways, this will get real interesting after the 4th. I’ll have a big decision to make on how far I want to go on this. They know I have a shoes/clothing store. I’ve told them I would be interested in everything – clothing and shoes. Would I really go all in? How do I handle this?
I’ll have to hire an employee if I do for sure.in the meantime, I need to process what I bought this week to start making some sales. I’m wondering if I should go to Poshmark with all of this as well.
In other scavenging news… got another $200+ carhartt Detroit lined jacket for like 25 cents ( part of a fill a box for $5).
a new in box generator transfer switch for $100 that sells for $350.
a felting machine (kinda like a sewing machine) for $10 that is really rare and sells for $300+.
The level of awesomeness of yard sales this summer is blowing my freaking mind!

Man everybody must be super busy with summer stuff on here.
So far I’ve created 27 drafts for a list price of $3000. I know there are plenty more of the big unicorns in there so I’m feeling confident my final list value will be over $8k, possibly $10k on the “premium hoarder” sale.
I haven’t made it live yet, but one of the items was a sealed Queer as Folk complete DVD set. I got it thinking that it would be worth an easy $50 as it looks like a very premium style box set. Well it’s way better than that! I’m kinda stuck on deciding where to price this one. I was going with $250, but there is a comp from 1 year ago that sold for $450. I think there may be some differences in variance in the box sets. I may bump it up to $399 and see what happens.

Assuming it’s this 28 disc set, I think you’re right on the mark pricing somewhere in the range of $250 and $399. I tend to go on the low end of comps with most media listings because you never know if something will get a physical reissue or plastered all over every streaming platform, but the old out of print stuff I always price high. Especially sealed. I will be interested to see if your set sells internationally, a lot of my high end media listings end up overseas.

This is one of the things about the scavenging world that makes me a little sad — especially with the amount of money we’re talking about! — but then think about it from the perspective of the living, the family members of the deceased relative. Obviously you will be doing them a huge service by buying up all this stuff in one shot, even the jeweler was, and while that family probably doesn’t lack for me, an extra $70K is meaningful to most people. And of course reading about your finds is one of the best parts of this forum, I just hope that there is a Ralph Lauren bear sweater in there for you somewhere. I don’t know clothes at all (though I’ve learned quite a bit from your posts), but I still know that’s a nice find.

@Retro how fun! Happy for you.
This is not earth shattering but I thought these dishes were super cool. I’m guessing they are just butter dishes since they are so small. I don’t eat lobster. I couldn’t find anything remotely similar on the web, so I priced them high with best offer.

This item is from the piles and I had a hard time pricing. I found any number of these listed and sold, priced all over the place and some claiming (dubiously in some cases) to be real brass or antique. I think mine is just pot metal, probably Midcentury and it’s not marked. I’m just throwing it out at this price with best offer hoping someone likes the face and patina. It is heavy.

@craig-rex There’s crop marks on the Lou Gehrig photo, also the image isn’t centred properly on the paper, like it was printed out in a hurry for the editor to check over, before publication. There may be some rubber-stamped filing info on the back.

The lines drawn on the photo indicate how the image is to be cropped for publication. So the picture editor’s decided to lose a bit off the top. Whoever printed the photo didn’t line the easel properly under the enlarger, which is why the image is a bit askew.

Thank you for the helpful info. I received the photo yesterday, and you’re correct about the filing info on the back. It certainly appears that I have a nice quality item which will sell on the high end of sold comps once it has been properly authenticated. I’ll see if I can upload a pic when I post next week’s thread.

@Retro – What an incredible haul. Hope you can get the rest for a reasonable price. Be nice to sit back and not worry about scavenging for a while. Will be interested to see how quickly it sells.
