Agreed Chris started giving me shady/salesman vibes before this because I realized through bits and pieces of things he would say that he actually had not been doing his process that he presents on YouTube for very long and had poor buyer reviews from about a year ago. Not saying you can’t make mistakes/learn in the process but it seems weird to prop yourself up as an expert with not a lot of actual track record.
That being said I actually subscribed to the Patreon podcast even after all this because I keep listening for Technsports. IMO Chris just copied a lot of his method (nothing wrong with that) and polished it up for Youtube.
@Jay from what I understand he’s trying to sell off of Whatnot.I’m excited to say I had my best week ever on eBay, which is roughly the same as Jay and Ryanne’s worst week lmao!
I am now about 30 days into listing 5 items a day and I have doubled my weekly income (we’ll see if it continues with the summer slump). Home run sale of the week was a MARPAT Goretex (cold/wet weather Marine Corps parka) that sold within 3 days for $150, which I picked up for $7. I also hit 300 listings this week!
I just listened to the first part of Daily Refinement’s “Scaling…w/burnout Mel” episode and I swear he was referencing the episode where @Jay and @Ryanne talk about selling cups of coffee from their partner’s food truck event where they were realizing the volume you had to do in order to bring in a certain amount of sales. Anyone else think he’s a DL Scavenger Life listener or is it just coincidence? Around the 8:30 mark here.
Okay thanks, I heeded your advice and sent a pre-emptive link to the Pirate Ship tracking page just in case the premature delivery notification is still a thing.
Uh oh I didn’t paste anything in regarding VAT although I do remember seeing ebay said they buyer paid it upfront. Dang I hope I don’t get any issues; there was no warning about it during the processing.
@jay It’s a really good question; I’m not sure what technsports’ end goal is even though he says he “wants the option to take a 50 year vacation” because it seems as though he’s already there. He seems to make tons of money and has rentals in addition to a brick and mortar, ebay, and a lawn care business but still has this mindset of “being hungry”. Perhaps it’s sheer habit at this point.
As for dailyrefinement I can understand his grind because he’s only been 6 figures maybe the last two years and he has a new baby (ebay his his full time job).
I agree ebay is a means to an end unless I figure out a way to source 80% of the time (the fun part, ha!)
@retro-treasures-wv I got a laugh out of you cringing over his clickbait titles because I feel the exact same way! Why the clickbait titles?? It lowers credibility in my mind. Thanks for sharing your detailed calculation! I never thought about looking at storage efficiency in that way, but I guess it makes sense. Funny you mentioned getting rid of men’s jackets; I just took a plunge on some men’s jackets (trying out something different) so here’s hoping I don’t end up kicking myself for it haha.I enjoy reading how everyone’s weeks are going even if I have little to add with my teensy store other than my sales did pick up slightly compared to last week. @christiner I’ve thought about scouring Pottery Barn for sales too; did you buy direct from their site or pick up a lot secondhand? About a quarter of my sales are from TRR because I’m lucky enough to be able to source some things that meet their criteria and I quite like it.
@mark-s I decided to start a thread for discussion of dailyrefinement’s podcast because I’ve been following lately too. I’m a fan of the storage method and plan on getting cardboard boxes in the right size with the next quarterly supplies coupon.I finally hit over $5k listed, next up is to hit 200 items listed (I have been hovering around 180 for a long time).
My sales have taken a huge nosedive this first week of March despite daily listing. Only one sale in 8 days and on my other platform (TRR) I’ve suddenly had more returns than usual in the same timeframe. Not sure if it’s the nicer weather causing people to shop less, or the war in Ukraine impacting (people following news instead of shopping, possible economic uncertainty, etc). Maybe it’s nothing! Just working on listing more now.
Okay thank you, I was wondering if that was the case. Maybe because I signed up around this time originally?
Anna mentioned not allowing more than 2 or 3 days to go by without activating a listing, so I’ve been employing scheduled listings for this (because I also tend to complete listings in chunks). I have just under 200 items in my store and before this I would have at least one 10 day streak per month of no sales. After 30 days of daily listing, I haven’t had more than 3 days pass without a sale. So now I can estimate that I need to roughly triple my store to get to the daily sale mark, which also coincides with what Jay and Ryanne talk about (getting to around 500 items is when the store starts to take off).

Thank you @annaesthetic23 for your insight! I started experimenting last week with scheduled listings after hearing the Daily Refinement youtuber talk about how consistent daily listings was even more important than quantity of listings for putting the algorithm in your favor. It’s good to hear a specific number on days (don’t go more than 3), something he didn’t mention (he pushes for daily).
02/16/2021 at 10:36 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 501: Shout Out To Everyone Who Shows Up and Works #85967@Jay I went through and listened to the podcast and really feel what you mean about how every holiday was a fight when you were a kid and there’s a kind of PTSD around it. That was me too. It took me a while to get there, but now I try to celebrate holidays with gusto (although not all I will admit; one or two are still too wrapped up in baggage for me to try to redeem), to make new memories to replace the bad. I have kids now so I try to make it special and stress-free for them in the way that I wish it had been growing up. My husband thinks I put too much pressure on myself about making holidays special (mostly because he’s an ultra-utilitarian type and thinks most things are unnecessary haha), but I don’t see it that way; I think I see it more how you guys see building your cafe; you have a dream of the future and what you would like life in your circle to be like, and you take matters into your own hands to create that space. 🙂
02/16/2021 at 8:24 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 501: Shout Out To Everyone Who Shows Up and Works #85965@julie-b If the shoes are in basically brand new condition, I’d send them to The Real Real first. It’s absolutely true that there is a different buyer pool there versus Ebay. Cross check what you have with their accepted brands list, and then if you have more than 10 items you can request a UPS pickup at your door. I almost can guarantee you will get more for them there than on ThredUp (which btw they only sell your merch for 90 days max before forcing you to relinquish it to them or pay to send it back). Anything The Real Real rejects they will mail back to you, free and anything they accept they hang onto for at least a year (continually lowering the price). The rejects I’d then consider putting on ThredUP if I couldn’t find another way to deal with them.
@simplicio I’m in the same boat! Bought a lot to resell through Ebay but now thinking I need to get pickier. It’s hard when it’s so easy to just have inventory show up at your door! Haha
@lukastreasuretrove Ugh I hate those kinds of negative, weirdly open-ended interactions. FWIW I think your store is great, going by those numbers! :p@thomasl Thank you for the suggestion! I have done as you have outlined and hopefully won’t hear drama back. Funny thing is this item has attempted to sell 3 times now and none of the sales have gone through (it’s just an infant costume, no weird restrictions)!
