Got mine and used it already (@jay and @ryanne, I bought a Hario Coffee Scale with Timer because I’m a coffee freak also!)
First Purchase: Vintage Tuxedo in 2002. This might have been the one I wore at my wedding! (I bought a few vintage ones to try on…., so much cheaper than buying/renting a new one)
First Sale: A study guide my wife used for nursing school. Probably got half our money back.
83% of my shopping on ebay is Business & Industrial
43% of my selling on ebay is in Collectibles
I like that they did this, interesting stuff. and I love the free cash!
I would only mention smell if I noticed one of significance (sometimes old books have that “smell” and I note it). I’d just tell her she can to return it although I hope, for your sake, nothing that she did affected the item in any way.
People on the forum often swear by leaving clothes/blankets/fabric out in full sunlight for a few hours and the smell goes away or diminishes significantly. You could offer up that solution or try it yourself if the item is returned.
This is a good price and slightly cheaper than where I buy on eBay.
supplyhut ebay $23.05 for 8 cu = $2.88 per cu
office depot special $13.99 for 5 cu = $2.78 per cu
If anyone has cheaper prices (via nationwide stores or the internet) you should post them so we can all go greener for cheaper!
08/19/2020 at 10:00 am in reply to: Help Identifying a logo on double deck of vintage playing cards? #80823@Timo Well eBay members can definitely be an asset. I just had another person email me about a new listing for a what I called a spreader put probably is a palette knive for ceramics. Super helpful and friendly.
I hate the people that tell you info about the item in a condescending way or try to shame you for getting details wrong. Luckily there are less of those people out there.
I’ve never used, but know about https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/
It could be additional place to go. And of course the people here on Scavengerlife are great and help a bunch!
08/18/2020 at 12:12 pm in reply to: Help Identifying a logo on double deck of vintage playing cards? #80792Logo Id’ed by an ebay member today! Got a message that this logo comes from the Royal Viking Cruise Line which was in service from 1972-1998. If you go here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Viking_Line
you can see the bird logo. Love resolution to things.

Thanks for the input! Reamer is a better word than juicer and more implies handheld. It is a very high quality glaze and heavy so if handmade it was well done. I did just find this:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/360006563959909774/
Which has a similar glaze and size (unfortunately the link to the store doesn’t work any more)
I may just list it with a high price as a handheld pottery citrus reamer and see what happens. But if anyone else has info, I’d love it!
I do almost exactly the same thing you do (AmEx App also) so I’ll be interested to see what I think when they switch me over next week. I pay GoDaddy monthly (started in Jan only) and I like but don’t looooove it, so maybe I’ll just keep track on my own like I used to.
The Android App update has this also. Makes it a lot easier!
Love finding the frees! Live in urban Portland, OR. During COVID lockdown, often at dusk my wife and I (or just me) take quiet walks around the neighborhood. I’ve scored a few things that people have just put out for free. My latest was a combo:
A Revere Ware Coffee Pot: https://www.ebay.com/itm/193525188370 $32.99, just needed a quick wash.
And maybe even better, because of the absurdity, there was an unopened package of vintage disc filters for another coffee maker. Those sold in the last 24 hours for $12.99. https://www.ebay.com/itm/193551571360
So basically $46 of stuff sold because of a walk around the block!
08/04/2020 at 12:53 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 474: How Do We Only Sell High Priced Items All The Time? #80352My thoughts on packing and double boxes. In the 3+ years since starting my part-time store, I think 5 or 6 things have been broken or partially damaged. I do double box when things are very fragile or there are multiple pieces that could hit each other (and never had any of these shipments break but we might be looking at 20 items tops).
The rest of my fragile items, I bubble or foam wrap a few times around and then use the packing peanuts as the caller does. (5 or 6 broken in many hundreds of fragile shipments).
But I do agree with Ryanne, it doesn’t really matter how you pack, it is the amount of space between the box and the item, and the amount of packing material used.
The times there have been damaged shipments, upon reflection, it was almost always there was not enough room between the item and the outer box. Sometimes I was trying to use a box I shouldn’t, or trying to fit under the 12x12x12 size. And then once in a while, it is not my fault, and it seems that a box was thrown or dropped or crushed and there was really nothing I could do.
08/04/2020 at 12:39 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 474: How Do We Only Sell High Priced Items All The Time? #80351Me listening to podcast last night: Huh, Ryanne says she’s been selling a lot of travel collector items lately. Surprised I haven’t noticed that myself.
Me just now hearing a notification on my phone: Those Vintage Yosemite National Park Double Deck Playing Cards just sold for $30. Woo Hoo! Never doubt Ryanne!
Interestingly for me June was much worse than July has been. I’ve already surpassed June sales and then some. I attribute this to the amount of listing I started doing at the end of June (I’ve put up over 120 listings in the past 3 weeks). Hoping to power through the summer and list list list and hope this wave of sales continues!
07/21/2020 at 7:31 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 472: Biggest Sale, Biggest Scavenge #79829Probably my best and most memorable sale (actually sales) was one that I think legitamized my part-time eBay business in my wife’s eyes. Maybe 3 months in to my serious go at a part-time store (3 years ago), I took my son and some friends to a basketball camp across town. I spied a huge garage sale on the way there and after dropping them off, returned to check it out.
I was obviously a clean out of a house, maybe a horder, and there were tons of things. I was a little overwhelmed but noticed a bunch of shoe boxes, that looked new. Went over and saw that they were SAS orthopaedic medical shoes (here is an example on ebay if you don’t know what I’m talking about: https://www.ebay.com/itm/131484952510?_trkparms=itm%3A131484952510.) My day job used to be in the medical field and I new these were expensive shoes.
I grabbed one box and went and asked how much they were per pair. In my head, I’m wondering how much I was willing to pay ($20 pair, maybe more…, do I have enough money….) and the woman running the sale said “Well how about $3 if they are new and $2 if they aren’t?” I quickly set all my stuff down (many other gems at this sale as well) and ran back to grab a huge stack of shoe boxes. I think I got 6 new pairs and 3 used pairs, for $24 total. I was so happy.
When my wife got home and saw all the shoes and what types they are (very unattactive!) scattered in our living room, she was worried about me. But I listed them immediately and started selling them. In two months, I was out of stock and probably made when all was said and done, after fees, $800+ in profit. She then actually realized that eBay could be a good business model and even during the Summer if we were out with friends, she’d be all proud and say, “Tell them about those weird shoes you are selling on eBay!”
Now she rarely raises an eye at anything I bring home….
07/20/2020 at 8:59 pm in reply to: Customer paid but asks to switch Fed Ex to USPS and “refund the overage” #79800I hate customers like this. I’d probably cancel the sale (I’d say buyer requests it because they want a different shipping than on the listig), then relist it with the USPS as a separate option and let her know. If she really wants to spend more on USPS she can then. I only refund when I combine purchases (usually whether they ask or not). I normally do it of the actual price of the shipping, never the discounted.
I had someone buy something this afternoon, and with it a message in all caps “SEND THIS OUT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE I WANT IT FOR MY BIRTHDAY ON THURSDAY” – I have priority mail on my listing but of course they chose the cheaper first class. I replied that with COVID it would be unlikely to arrive in time as USPS has longer times now but I’ll send it out today (only because I was going by the post office). Annoying.
