ThriftShift, congrats on the upcoming retirement! Also wanted to say that I’ve visited Port Royal a few times (my mom lives in Beaufort) and it is such a cute place!
Not a bad idea. I also don’t have a lot of time Monday to pack and run to the post office if I don’t get it all done Sunday night/ Monday am. So this is a good thought, thanks.
10/31/2017 at 1:45 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 332: Share Your Extreme Scavenging Confession #24610One scavenger confession story from 15 years ago was when I worked at a medical company start-up. One day I went in the break room to get a coffee mug out of the cupboard and I noticed there were two Fiesta retired lilac mugs (like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fiesta-RETIRED-LILAC-Coffee-Tea-Mug/172884779247?hash=item2840bc60ef:g:8aoAAOSwy3NZYtQG) mixed in with the all the other hodgepodge of mugs in that cabinet. I went home that night, got two cheap mugs from my house and switched out the mugs the next day. I wasn’t selling on ebay at the time or I’d probably have listed them in a second. They instead went in my personal mug collection and still are there today. I did feel a tiny bit guilty, but I worked there for another year and no one seemed to notice or care.
Sharyn, even at auctions people get a little nosy sometime. I bought a lot of old photos and slides a few weeks back for $15. At this auction they bring the item right to you after the sale (in the audience) unless it is a big item. So I’ve got this box of photos in my lap and two people came up to me and asked why I bought them! I wanted to say it was none of your business but I just said that my wife loves looking through old photos and they were for her. This is partially true as we will keep a couple and frame them for the house but the rest will go up on ebay. But generally 80%+ of the people are resellers and most respect each others privacy
10/13/2017 at 7:06 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 328: Chaos vs Stress, There is a difference in life and business #23881Adding to this thread because wanted to reply to Brian’s Treasures from Grandma’s comment that he got an offer and then got a full price offer from someone else within 24 hours. Same happened to me today. Woke up to a “full price but make it free shipping please” offer from across the country. Had a busy day at work and was going to counter with a “$5 off but regular shipping” offer, and I just came into my office with a full price regular shipping purchase! It had a few watchers and been up a few months with no action, so I’m assuming that the email everyone is talking about went out to all my watchers.
Makes me wonder how long I should wait before countering then? I don’t want to be a jerk and wait until the last minute. Is 8 hours okay, 12 hours, a full day? Not sure…. thoughts?
10/03/2017 at 1:08 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 329: 200+ Ebay Sales To Pack. We’re Not Complaining. #23557Since I have a small part-time business, I’ve just posting numbers once a quarter. So here is Q3 (July-Sept)!
# of items sold each month: 30, 44, 39
July was the low point, but August rebounded nicely!
Monthly sales $: $682.24, $1,076.75, $1,158.45
In August I found six new in box SAS shoes that I bought for $3 each at a garage sale. Ended up that one wasn’t new and one was new but in the wrong box but I still sold 5 of them in Aug and September for about $470 total. Went to a few auctions and at one I bought a lot of vintage electronic items, locks, knives and some wallets. Sold two of them to pay for the lot and sold another 4 items so far with a number of auctions still listed. Probably will 8x my money on this lot.
Average sale price $: $22.74, $24.47, $29.70
Trying to be over $25.00 but that slow July also was me selling more lower priced items. The shoes in August and September brought that up. I need to find more of those items!
Had one return of some Pyrex lids that were the wrong size. Customer paid for restocking and I got them back, no problem.
Was on vacation for 3 days and did Jay and Ryanne’s handling time change and I sold 6 items which I all shipped back on the following Monday. No problems.
Overall a good quarter for a part-time gig. I got up over 320 listings, but have backed off listing these past few weeks. Have a backlog I hope to get to in the next week and get those listings up before the holidays come around.
My first guess was a teenager may have bought this cap, unauthorized, but that really isn’t my fault (although if a person had to try to return it in the 30-day window because of an issue like that, no problem). But then the exact 90 day opening of the case made me think otherwise.
I like your credit overextended theory though. I kinda forget that many people just don’t take personal responsibility for their financial issues.
Replying to my own message because there was one interesting additional thing. Item was sold on June 6th, case opened on Sept 6th (90 days). I couldn’t see the ebay details because it was older than 90 days, but I save all my emails of transactions. I wonder if this person waited the 90 days for that reason or for some other non-nefarious reason.
Replying to myself here: It happened again with a belt buckle that just sold 7oz first class. At the top of the shipping page it says: Your shipping label cost might vary from your listing, as we do not offer labels if the package type is Letter or Large Envelope in the listing.
Weirdly I don’t usually select those, but now think it either transferred over from a sell similar or somehow it got selected. I’m going to try to figure out how to go through my listings and check this.
If I learned anything from the video, it is that your package will be dropped from a 2-3 ft height at least 4 times during processing so pack well! 🙂
I’ve done the math specific to my store using the ebay calculator (http://www.subs.ebay.com/feeweb/feeillustrator) and I got a break even point from basic to premium to right around 450. So your numbers seem in line with that. I only have about 250 in my new store so I’ve got a ways to go before I’ll jump to the next level.
07/25/2017 at 12:20 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 320: Spinning Plates, Keeping It All Going #20732So sorry to hear about all the damage doublythumbs, so horrible! Glad you and your girlfriend are safe.
So true Jay. That was why after a moment of surprise, I just chuckled and moved on. If I’ve learned anything on this podcast/forum it is to have a professional tempered response. Always the best policy.
Definitely not a negative feedback when you do everything in your power to make it right!
07/20/2017 at 6:31 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Hats, Briefcase, Glass mugs, Fender amp, Jansport, Hood emblem #20567pythonesk, thanks for posting about your surveyor’s tripod you sold. I found just a single leg on one of these that is really pretty (looks like oak with nice steel finishes). Wasn’t exactly sure what it was but it was $2 and cool. Seeing the prices of the complete tripods I’m guessing I can put this leg up for $25-40 and hope someone needs it for a repair!
