Goodwill stores are “franchises” as Jay said once on a pod cast. There are two groups that own goodwill franchises in my area, one group prices everything at or above ebay/amazon and will put copies of the listings alongside the items for sale. Very difficult to find anything to flip in these stores, so I mostly ignore them now.
This group of goodwill franchises has also rolled out a new color that NEVER goes on half off sale.
The other group of franchises still have treasures to be found, but their pricing is really awkward at times. I assume its because they don’t have the knowledge base on certain categories. One great example they had a car air filter priced at $7.99 (retail) next to a diesel fuel pump for a truck priced at $2.99. That fuel pump is worth $60.
I submitted the tracking info per ebay’s request and they settled the case in my favor. Ebay said the money will be released to me via paypal within 2- 10 days. The case is still showing that its open under “my cases” not sure if that means anything.
The buyer is still sending me messages asking for a refund and saying they will get ebay involved, but ebay already closed the case. Maybe the buyer doesn’t know how ebay works?
In a case like this who eats the price of the item ? Is it ebay, paypal, usps, or credit card company ?
Also, will the buyer be able to try to get their money back via paypal next and or perhaps thru a credit card charge back ? It seems to me that buyers get three opportunities to request refunds (ebay – paypal – credit card) although I’ve never had a buyer try all three avenues. This is also the first time I’ve had an “item not received” case.
Another thought for those selling high value replacement parts. There’s some type of permanent magic marker you can use to mark the parts. Junk yards in my area use them, but I don’t know the name of these markers.
Don’t know if something like goo gone could remove them either.
If his profession requires some type of license, file a complaint with that licensing agency and/or union.
Most people who have a professional license have to agree to some sort of “ethics agreement” in order to get and maintain that license.
That area of Rhode Island is mostly full of rich people, but I’m sure some middle class people are mixed in too, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some blue collar trades people working/living there.
I don’t know how common this is, but all the Walmart’s in my area crush/flatten and bale all their boxes. You could not pick thru them even if you wanted to. I am assuming they are getting some type of money from recyclers for doing this, but don’t know for sure.
In my area gamestops seems to have the best boxes.
As for liquor boxes I have heard its against postal rules to ship them because they advertise liquor. One could turn them inside out to avoid that I guess.
Was it an old man ? IF so maybe he’s retired and doesn’t mind spending all the time scanning books.
I still sell lots of books on amazon, but its mostly textbooks, religious books, and obscure books (like dungeons and dragons gaming books). Also, since amazon has raised fees I believe for selling thru FBA you need to sell at a min price of $7.50 to break even. (if you have a pro account it would be $6.50) with fees that high you can’t really sell mass market paperbacks and turn a profit.
I think the book scanners are usually people who just entered the amazon selling market and watched some video(s) on youtoobe to get started. They will learn soon enough that scanning rows and rows of books is not going to make them any money or they will give up completely.

Look up the buyers address in google streets to see if it’s a house or a business. If it’s a business see if the buyer is connected to the business. You can look up business owners at the secretary of the states office website in most states. You can also try searching for “registered agent” for that business.
If indeed it is a business contact the BBB better business bureau and file a complaint. When filing a complaint try to only stick to the facts and not opinion. You can also post a poor review on Yelp.com and you can try contacting the chamber of commerce in the buyers area assuming they are a member. If the business is some type of trade in which a person would need a license such as a plumber, contact the licensing authority for that trade in their state and/or union.
If all else fails and you still have gas left in the tank you can try small claims court. You may be able to file the case where you live, but you would have to review the law and rules to verify.
I don’t know if that price is high or low, but I always err on the high side. I would put those sneakers at $99 and wait.
I hear you and I double checked my return rates for the last 12 months and for DvDs it was zero percent (until I had this issue)
Return rate for video games and video game consoles is 2.3% for the last 12 months. There is too much profit to be made on these items so I can’t let them go. Ebay only charges 4% final value fee on video game consoles. (2.3% is roughly 7 returns out of 295 sales)
My return rates on Amazon are triple, so I prefer to sell on ebay when possible. (I can not sell dvds on amazon since I am restricted from that category)
I do not have returns in any other categories on ebay for the last 12 months. I wish I could find another category with sell thru rates like media and video game consoles, but so far I haven’t been able too. Stuff literally sells within a week. Last year I had one month with a sell thru rate of 60%.
If my returns reached 10% I would probably reconsider.
I use restocking fees on “new and factory sealed” items or items that are “new with tags” such as clothing. So far I have not charged a restock fee on any return. I think it’s a good way to discourage returns, but I have no stats to back that up.
Thanks for the reply, but that’s an even worse idea. 99.8% of the public has no clue what ubuntu is. I would get endless message asking, where’s hotmail ?, where’s internet explorer ?, how do I play dvds on this computer ?, etc.
I’m already computer support for everyone in my family including members who are younger than me and I don’t even work in IT and never have.
I am trying to get some info from my contacts at the USPS. On the surface, I do not see how this program is enforceable. Mostly for the reason that packages are not weighted during their journey in the USPS system. Packages are only weighed at acceptance.
I don’t know if that was a mistype, but please do not settle for $9.22. The full price the buyer paid is the amount you want. Your invoice is proof of the transaction value. This is also the amount you want to claim with USPS.
The benefit of filing with the USPS is if the buyer has a history of doing these frauds the at the same address it will be easier to build a case against them.
Most idiots are too dumb to change addresses when doing mail fraud.
The USPS takes mail fraud very seriously because they want the general public to have faith and trust in the mail system. If scammers are allowed to get away with stuff like this it diminishes the USPS’ goodwill. Obviously, they take claims on higher valued stuff more seriously, but if that item had insurance it may speed up the process a little bit.
Actually if it was insured see if you can submit a claim. (I doubt it but you never know)
As already noted when you sell electronic items or high value items take a photo of the serial number if the item has one. This includes game consoles, although I haven’t had a customer try a switcheroo on me yet.
If the item has a high value you can report the person to USPS for mail fraud. The USPS will investigate these claims.
If the item has a low value I would let it go because my time is worth more than the potential loss. I still would block them and report to ebay at the minimum.
