I’ve seen this option before. I think it is buried under “site preferences” / “ship preferences” but I think if you change this you can’t use calculated shipping on your listings because ebay won’t know the ship from zip code.
Not sure if this applies to your Canadian sale, but Canadians only pay import fees on items if the value is $20 or more. Not sure if that is USD or CAD.
If the sale price of your item is under $20 that’s probably why he isn’t seeing fees, because the import fee is actually zero. One would think a Canadian citizen would already know this.

I said this in another thread, but just a reminder that if you purchase insurance of $500 or greater signature confirmation is MANDATORY per USPS regs.
Also, if it were me I would drop off a high value package at the Post Office and get a receipt.
The receipt will have the date, weight, zip code, and city on it. This way if something comes up and the package is returned you will have proof of the weight at the minimum.Package weights are NOT tracked thru the USPS system as they move around.

Accept paypal at your sale. I’ve seen this at some garage sales. I think you can get the credit card dongle/reader directly from paypal, although I don’t know where you can request it on their site.
Because there’s a risk of chargebacks on paypal I would limit the dollar amount you accept to what ever you are willing to lose, perhaps $50.
I know most people are honest, but there are some scammy people out there that know how to work the system(s).
If you want to see heads explode at the post office try mailing a CD/DVD in a CD/DVD cardboard mailer at the 1st class letter rate with non machinable surcharge. At least half the post offices in my area will refuse these and insist it needs to be sent at the package rate.
Mailing a CD/DVD like this is about .90 cents although it won’t have tracking included. I’ve sent about 30 CD/DVDs this way and haven’t had a single one broken or lost yet.
With ebay’s new tracking metric I probably won’t be able to ship this way anymore and maintain TRS. Maybe I will open a 2nd account though for these low value items.
05/02/2017 at 11:46 am in reply to: Who's responsible for non-delivery when signature confirmation is used? #17374I don’t have experience with a non received shipment even when a signature was required.
What I can tell you is unfortunately there is theft inside the USPS and that may be a reason. Also, under USPS rules any insured item with a value of $500 or greater signature confirmation is MANDATORY. IOW, its included in the price of the insurance.
As for customers getting upset about going to the post office to pick up packages due to signature confirmation this is what you should tell them.
On the pink notice slip a customer can sign it and choose to have the package redelivered and left at their house. Their signature on that pink slip acts as the “signature confirmation”
Redeliver may not be possible for high valued insured or registered items I’m unsure. I would guess most of the items people are selling here are under $500 so the “redeliver” option is valid.
For something with a high value like that I would require adult signature confirmation and purchase shipping insurance. I have only sold a few high dollar items on ebay that is what I did.
If this item is something that usually attracts scammers such as high priced apple products or high priced cell phones I would be very suspicions.
I would also type in the address in google maps and make sure the address if valid. I would also drill down on google maps to see if the address is a house, business, school, etc. IF the address doesn’t make sense or doesn’t exist I would cancel the sale. If it sold once it will sell again.
Ebay DOESN’T send you a 1099k (ie report your income to the IRS) PAYPAL is the entity that reports you. In order to receive a 1099K you need to have 200 transactions AND 20k is sales for the year combined.
A 1099k is for “Credit Card and 3rd Party Network transactions”.
Ebay may ask for your EIN or if you don’t have one you can use your SS #. Paypal certainly will ask for this info once you get close to the 200 transactions or 20k in sales. Paypal will project your sales for the year.
If you are a new seller it’s advisable to start slow and steady. Don’t jump out of the gate with 500 listings and 5k in monthly sales. That will raise flags.
Amazon is a whole different animal, but I won’t get into that.
Yes its a wonder sellers like that still exist. I figure its better for us though since all that extra non sense is probably driving customers away.
FWIW, I DO NOT buy from sellers who do not offer returns, or ones who have crazy manifestos like that. While I know in the end ebay/paypal will force a seller to accept a return, I’d rather not jump thru all those hoops to get my money back.
04/25/2017 at 12:33 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 307: Getting Ready to Sell While Traveling #17047I have always done well with repair manuals, even the generic Haynes or Chilton manuals. As long as I can get them for $1 or under I always pick them up. Even better are motorcycle repair manuals. Those are hard to come by though.
As a seller I will mark listings that may seem to be of a personal or controversial nature with the “buyer ID’s are private” box checked on the listing. I don’t know if this leads to more sales or not, but I hope buyers notice.
Two prime examples are Playboy magazines or diabetic supplies.

You can try researching highest sold vinyl records by category I think such as Jazz, blues, rock, etc. That should give you an general idea of what to look for.
I do know that some Jazz records that were originally recorded in “mono” can be valuable. If the record(s) were recorded in “mono” that word should be imprinted on the vinyl record decal and/or the outside of the record. Some of these records were later re-recorded in “stereo”
One name I know to look out for is Stan Getz.
Also, if you find any records, regardless of who the artists are, “sealed” never opened that can increase value significantly.
04/18/2017 at 9:48 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 302: How to Deal with Dreaded eBay Scammers Lurking Everywhere!! #16754I listened to your #302 podcast today since I’m trying to catch up. I may have some insight as to why the last caller said Puerto Rico is now an Intl shipping on ebay.
If one digs thru the USPS rules & regs if you ship an item with a value of $1500 USD or greater to Puerto Rico you are required to fill out a customs form. This may be why ebay bounced it to an intl shipping.
Also remember that ebay will not let you change the sold value after the sale is completed. So if I am correct in this case it would probably be easier to just bring the shipment to the post office in person and declare a lower value. Then take that tracking number and input it manually to your ebay account for the transaction.
This $1500 limit also applies to other US Possessions. It’s even more complicated if you are shipping from one US Possession to another, although I doubt any one here has ever done that.
I have shipped plenty of 1st class and priority packages to Puerto Rico without issue, so other than the $1500 limit I can’t think of another reason why PR shipping would get bounced to Intl.
I think “Adler” was a brand name used by Sears. In the same way that “Kenmore” is a Sears brand name.
Otherwise I do not really know anything about the speakers, but they are probably worth more than $20. If they work and the parts are in good condition it may actually make more sense to part them out.
Thanks for the replies. I did call ebay and spoke to two different reps and they both told me the negative feedback isn’t removable. Since it does not fall into one of their narrowly defined reasons that negative feedback can be removed. Such as profanity or extortion.
They told me to contact the buyer and ask them to revise the feed back. However, since I already refunded them I have nothing to offer the buyer in return and don’t see why they would remove the negative if nothings in it for them.
I have actually had a number of items over the years that were damaged in the mail and or defective on arrival and no buyers ever left me a negative after refunding them.
I don’t see the point in offering refunds if buyers can still give a negative feedback other than the TRS discount. Since I’m a small part time seller the TRS discount isn’t very much for me, so losing it wouldn’t make much of a difference. I pointed this out to ebay as well and they didn’t seem to care.
They also didn’t seem to care that the feedback and comment are contradictory. In the feedback message buyer wrote something like “product was defective, but seller refunded me” that sounds like a good experience to me. I argued that the feedback should be removed just because of the contradictory statements. (For example, contradictory statements like this would be removed by amazon)
I suppose I can call another day, but they sent me a message/email that said in bold letters
FEEDBACK NOT REMOVABLE CASE #xxxxx so it seems like I won’t be able to argue this with another rep.I have sixteen years on ebay without a single negative and that doesn’t seem to matter to them I guess.
