I sold a tv series box set on blu-ray. Buyer says one disc doesn’t work and is skipping etc. I know that’s not true since I check all discs personally. I tell them bring the disc to a video game store and have the disc cleaned/resurfaced. Buyer says no stores like that in their area.
I look up their address and find about 5 video game stores in their area they can visit and give them the phone number to one such store. They reply “I don’t have a car”
They suggest a partial refund of $14 and I agree since I would still be making a profit. A few hours later they reject the offer and want a $30 discount. I said no thanks return the item.
They did all this lying to save $4.10 in return shipping fees ? Doesn’t seem like the time and effort to do this would be worth it.
I called ebay and relayed the story and they [ebay] credited my account the return shipping fee.

I feel like you have consistent issues selling DVD’s and electronics. We have chosen not to sell these items because of these issues that we cant defend. It’s really your word against the buyer’s word. From what I read, many other sellers have similar issues selling DVD’s and electronics.
So you must make a choice:
–sell these items knowing you’ll have to eat a certain amount of abuse.
–or dont sell them.
–or keep selling and keep pulling your hair out looking for justice.Being surprised by the behavior of some buyers in this category seems fruitless.

I hear you and I double checked my return rates for the last 12 months and for DvDs it was zero percent (until I had this issue)
Return rate for video games and video game consoles is 2.3% for the last 12 months. There is too much profit to be made on these items so I can’t let them go. Ebay only charges 4% final value fee on video game consoles. (2.3% is roughly 7 returns out of 295 sales)
My return rates on Amazon are triple, so I prefer to sell on ebay when possible. (I can not sell dvds on amazon since I am restricted from that category)
I do not have returns in any other categories on ebay for the last 12 months. I wish I could find another category with sell thru rates like media and video game consoles, but so far I haven’t been able too. Stuff literally sells within a week. Last year I had one month with a sell thru rate of 60%.
If my returns reached 10% I would probably reconsider.

2.3% returns is normal for any category, so that’s great. The way I hear sellers complain about DVDs and games on reddit, I’d assume the return rate was 20%.
At that low return rate, I’d just assume we’d eat a little loss each month. Respond and dispute anything you feel unfair, but I wouldnt stress about it.
Dont let any grumpy buyers rent space in your head.

I know this is counter-intuitive, and I don’t sell that stuff, but my policy is 30 day returns, I pay return shipping. I get very few returns, and have not had to deal with buyers claiming INAD to get free return shipping, since they are getting it without the need to BS.
I don’t know, maybe your return rate would go up if you tried this, but maybe not…it seems pretty low as it is, and as you say, with the low FVFs I’m guessing you could afford to pay the occasional return shipping?
To me, the fact that I don’t need to deal with buyers trying to weasel me out of free return shipping is worth the possibility that I might have to pay it once in a rare while.

I sell a lot of electronics – including games on CD/DVD. I’ve been selling gaming systems for 20 years on eBay.
I have found the easiest way to deal with people is eat the return shipping, get the item back, and re-sell it to someone else. I rarely get returns, but this is the easiest and headache free way to deal with it. Most items I buy are under $10, and sell for over $100, so if I have to eat $10 of shipping every once and awhile, I’m still making profit when I resell the item.
Some people don’t know how to work some electronic items as well – sometimes the issue is that they have no clue how to turn on an item, connect it to their TV, change the channel to get the gaming console to show up, etc. Any return I have got (that was the same item I shipped) work fine. I’ve had a couple scammers, but they get caught quickly as they pull the same scam dozens of times in a short period and that sends red flags up on their account.
The other issue I have as an electronics buyer is that people don’t describe the item correctly, or lie. “Untested” or “As Is” always means it doesn’t work or is broken. “I didn’t test this function” means that function doesn’t work. I don’t understand why people don’t honestly say what functions don’t work, or if the item doesn’t work – there are a lot of people like myself that can fix most items (and resell) or are looking for parts – your not going to get top dollar, but you will get a honest sale with a happy customer describing the item as it is.
