I must be attracting all the fools this month or something, but here’s another issue.
I sold a video game system to someone and it was delivered on Aug 7th (left with individual) now the buyer opens return request Aug 9th because they say they haven’t received the item.
What happens in this situation ? Believe it or not its never happened to me before.
This package was also sent priority mail so its insured.I told the buyer to check with other house hold members and neighbors to see if they have the item. I also told them to call the local post office and have them ask the mail carrier if he remembers who he left the package with or where.
Lastly, I told them if they still can’t find the package I will be calling the police in their town and the US Postal inspectors to report theft of mail. The person I’m dealing with is a teenager most likely due to the poor spelling and pattern of writing.

Did the buyer open a return case or an item not received case? As long as the tracking shows it was delivered, you should be off the hook with Ebay. If it was opened as a return case, you may want to accept it, to get the return clock moving, so you can close in five days. You may want to ask Ebay first.
I don’t know if you are allowed to file the Police report, because you are not the victim.
Long story short, the item was delivered and shows it. you have done your part. You should contact Ebay regarding the open case and deal with that. I would not advise getting involved with the Police or USPS fraud theft, unless of course they contact you.
I would continue to encourage the buyer to be proactive on his end to find out what happened to his package. It is unfortunate, but not your responsibility if the package was stolen or incorrectly delivered at the destination.
Once the open case is closed in your favor, the buyer cannot leave feedback for you.

So Cal Joe said it all. Personally I think you’ve already communicated too much with the buyer. No need to threaten to call the police.
If the tracking number through eBay says “delivery confirmed”, you’re good. eBay/Paypal will back you up if the buyer opens a case.

I submitted the tracking info per ebay’s request and they settled the case in my favor. Ebay said the money will be released to me via paypal within 2- 10 days. The case is still showing that its open under “my cases” not sure if that means anything.
The buyer is still sending me messages asking for a refund and saying they will get ebay involved, but ebay already closed the case. Maybe the buyer doesn’t know how ebay works?
In a case like this who eats the price of the item ? Is it ebay, paypal, usps, or credit card company ?
Also, will the buyer be able to try to get their money back via paypal next and or perhaps thru a credit card charge back ? It seems to me that buyers get three opportunities to request refunds (ebay – paypal – credit card) although I’ve never had a buyer try all three avenues. This is also the first time I’ve had an “item not received” case.

Gompers, you’re making this too complicated.
–If you had the case closed on eBay, you should have received an eBay message documenting this action.
–If the buyer tries to open a Paypal case, you simply provide Paypal with the tracking info and they will also close the case in your favor.
–It doesn’t matter what the customer says. eBay/Paypal are the “man in the middle” who decide the cases based on the rules.

AS I was writing this ebay sent me a message via email saying case closed in my favor.
Previously, I only had confirmation of the case being closed per automated telephone response.
Before the case was closed the status said “waiting for buyers response” so looks like they don’t know how ebay works or they completely ignored ebay’s request.

Cool. For many cases, we actually just communicate with eBay. Then we let eBay communicate with the buyer.
Customers can get very emotional about an unhappy sale so there’s no logical reason to negotiate with them. If you’ve done your job, eBay will back you up in most cases. This has been our experience over the last eight years.

Good deal.. it sounds like the system worked as it should.
As long as you are receiving your Paypal notifications or are logging in every week or so, you should be fine. Yes he can pursue a refund through Paypal, but as Jay said, you’ll just have to upload the tracking to them and they will also close it.
I wouldn’t communicate with the buyer anymore, except, to maybe refer them to Ebay.
Most likely it is a done deal.

Just a thought. I have often had my packages delivered to a nearby house with the same number, but different street. For example, 123 Main instead of 123 Elm.
