Returns chat – I WISH ebay would bring back the 14 day returns not 30 day. However, 99% of returns I’ve had are within the first day or two. Not bad. I had an expensive watch returned on day 29. I googled the buyer and he was a consignment brick and mortar jeweler! Pretty sure he was selling my watch and when it didn’t sell in his shop he sent it back. He had a whole story and it was borderline neurotic. Thankfully I was listening to SL at the time and had good drama free practices in place.
Spent today sourcing President’s Day sales and yesterday my 50 cent Sunday sales. Keeping those inventory costs low! Still got lots of stuff and forced me to get out of box and grab some cheapies but goodies.
Weekly ebay Report:
Store: 1237
Sales: 1,128.75
Items Sold: 27
Best Sale of Week: Ran a 30% off sale on old inventory and sold some old stuff for still a decent profit. Hooray.Weekly Other Platforms after fees:
Depop: $11 (belt)
Mercari: $31 (MCM tray)
Poshmark: $110 random clothingI am SHOCKED at how much buzz my vintage items get on Mercari.
Free shipping on SOME items like what I call “commodity” amazon ish items. For example, cleaning products, makeup items, skincare.
I used to free ship USPS first class to stay competitive in clothing but I’m cooling on it especially since Poshmark charges flat under 5lb $6.79 and buyers pay it over and over again.I am going to get more of the USPS Flat Rate Paper (not padded) Envelopes b/c it saves about .50 cents per item now in shipping. This will work only some of the time and I really don’t like them, but I am going to try it for some thin items.
Hi Christine – I am working on mine! I have a COGS spreadsheet I fill out every 3 months, I download my sales report from ebay last 90 days into excel. Add a COGS column next to what sold and call it good.
Go Daddy takes care of my big annual number, business expenses.
I got Mile IQ for 2019Here to report!! I did my high dollar death pile listings today. It included going to the alterations lady on a gown I was going to try to repair myself. NOT. So, I bit the bullet but at least that dress is in progress. It also included some silver polishing and I listed my dreaded trench coats.
All $100+ items, glad it’s over with. ha! Let the sales role in!Jay – to clarify:
I said 20% my sales come from off ebay right now. I should have said 20% my sales come from non- ebay right now.
80 on ebay/ 20 off of ebayI recently heard a couple people say they sort by highest dollar value first to get started on a death pile. I like this b/c I tend to have my highest value items as the captain of death pile. It’s b/c it takes more research / fussing/ styling.
TODAY IS THE DAY! All my high dollar DPs will get listed today come hell or high water.1. Unsure on impracticality, I just keep listing on each (400 on posh, 1200 on ebay, 100 on Mercari & Depop). 20% my sales come from off ebay right now. I would like to sell on ebay only and not cross list, but that’s not going to happen right now.
2. I research often too long but investing in Worthpoint has cut down time. At some point, just put best offer on there and move on.
3. Don’t just look at SOLDS when you list it – check throughout the year if yours has not sold.Yes, I was asked this but it was more to gauge the breakable ness of the item as I recall. Not sure why as it all goes on the same truck I think! And they aren’t going to repack it.. so..?
Good question, Sonia. I guess I could just label / categorize them as Inventory expense under NON Business Expenses which feels weird b/c it doesn’t show true cash flow.
I saw your suggestion above, and I have too many items to convert to COGS each month.
I plan on entering COGS as a large entry (I keep a separate sheet for COGS).I am messing around in Go Daddy tonight which I use for tax stuff.
So, b/c we don’t claim any inventory purchases unsold on taxes, Go Daddy sucks in all my debit card / checks from my business account and labels all these inventory buys them “business expense” Which is great for business purposes and not really for tax purposes I guess?
This is kind of annoying as I can’t hide this line, I guess my tax man will know what to do?
I buy rugs without backing so I can easily fold them up (youtubes have great instructions). Then it’s Fed Ex (trash bag + sturdy box).

Yesterday I spent $90
The current value of those listed items is about $600. Margin is eh for me at at average $6 per piece. That is just the way it rolls sometimes. Do I like spending $90 in one pop / average of $6.60 per item? NO. But that is the way those days go sometimes when I choose thrift stores as my sourcing.02/12/2019 at 8:51 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 398: How To Buy or Not To Buy on eBay #56830One thing I am going to try to do is have a mini stockpile in drafts. There are some days when I cannot list, and if I had 10 in the hopper with little to no editing it would be a good self care biz practice.
my order of flow:
1. post ALL to ebay and as I go I:
2 clothes/shoes/accessories to Posh
3. hardgoods and beauty to Mercari and some super easy clothing (tee shirts)
4. very certain clothes to Depop (Vintage, tee shirts, streetwear)So, by the time I am done w/ the listing, it should have touched 1-3 platforms at one process.
02/11/2019 at 11:25 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 398: How To Buy or Not To Buy on eBay #56812Great podcast – was there a thread specifically talking about inventory costs? I could talk about this forever! It is why I joined the forum to begin with. I could not get a straight answer from any “guru” or FB group on this when ppl kept saying ” list list list” I was like. um, ok, but.. uh, you need money for that. Inventory is not cheap where I live and i do NOT live in NYC. ha! I am luckily branching into new overlooked categories which brings those costs way down. But it is like starting over in some ways and having a lower STR sucks as I learn the category and get ranked in category!
Which is ANOTHER thing to discuss – being ranked as a successful seller in categories.
Ebay store: 1100
Sold: 20 items
Sales: $853
Highest: a rug $150
Cogs: $91Poshmark:$126
Depop: $30
Mercari:$0 (I have made $200 since starting in December FYi)total: $1009
Alternate Platform Chat: As I mentioned, alternate platforms combined are starting to be an average 20% of my sales with regular cross-listing. Sometimes ebay breaks my heart.I would LOVE to be ebay only, but I cannot ignore the increase boost to move cash.
I have a 2009 Macbook Pro Laptop and the only problem is the battery and I added some memory. I have changed it about 3 times and it never quite works. I get about 1 hour charge, which is enough for me to ship.
I LOVED my Macbook Air I had for work, it was so great! I would get one for personal use. -
