If there was a second person running the garage sale present I might mention on the sly to that person that I was interested in the same item and would pay the asking price for it. Just on the off chance that the second person would go tell the owner/negotiator not to take the lower offer.
Makes me sound bad I know, but I just don’t have any patience when people are dickering over small amounts. Time is money.
My experience has been the same as ebaymom’s. I agree with “My gut feel (no proof other than anecdotal) is that sales in a particular category give you a temporary boost in rank in that particular category…”
I’ve noticed that when I take an offer or sell a BIN sewing pattern I suddenly get a few sales on the same day in that catagory. I have sewing patterns listed all the time so I would expect them to just average out to a certain # of sales per month. But it seems I either sell none at all or 3 in a day.
Libby you still beat me – LOL!
Still I feel good about listing 35 items, that’s a lot for me. I implemented a tip from Amazing Taste, she keeps a basket of “easy to list” items for when she doesn’t feel like listing. I embellished on that idea and decided that I would list 3 easy items first thing each morning, which worked out really well. Sadly these are very low dollar items, which will kill my ASP, but at least I’ll finally get them out of my basement death pile (she said hopefully). Also I ended up feeling good about listing 3 things on eBay before 8:00 am each morning instead of feeling guilty about avoiding listing all day long.
I couldn’t find the high dollar doll that I had in mind to list next, so I moved on to another one and fell down the rabbit hole of making extra clothes to sell with it, hoping that it will sell for more with those “extras”. Fun, since I love to sew, but probably not the best use of my time as far as making $. I’d like to think I’d work differently (and be much more like Libby:)) if eBay was a real business for me instead of a hobby, but I’m not sure that’s actually the case; I’m more of a dabbler.
I’m not sure how my upcoming week will go, I expect I’ll have a lower # of new listings, I’ve got a busy week ahead. I hope to at least keep doing the 3 easy listings every morning though.
Wishing you all a great week ahead!
Wow, 119 listings, I’m amazed – good job Libby!
24 listings for me which is over 3x the amount I listed last week, so I’m good with that. I’m hoping to accomplish more this week by listing a lot (for me!) of easy quick list low dollar items while still putting another one of my long prep high dollar dolls up. I just sold another doll for $249.95 tonight so I guess the prep time is worth it. Most of my sales average less than $20 🙁
Wishing everyone a great week ahead!
03/18/2019 at 2:03 pm in reply to: Promoted Listings Trending Rates – 16.4% for Collectibles!? #58892I had an interesting accidental experiment using promoted listings. I always use 1% as my promoted rate but I accidentally put 7% instead of 1% on my last campaign. And had super slow sales, with days of no sales at all.
That confirmed my belief that upping the promoted rate doesn’t do anything to increase sales. My sales are usually pretty good, with sales every day in my 200 item store, and I list my stuff at the lower end of average. I think MyCottage is correct and it’s price that drives sales, not higher promotion rates.
Welcome back Libby! Week 11 for me: just 7 new listings, I’ll do better this week though.
Wishing everyone a great week!
I did 29 new listings (more than I expected to accomplish) but I put off the long prep high dollar items and did the easy to list low dollar stuff instead. I’m working on the slow to prep items now so I’ll have way less new listings next Monday.
Amatino thank you for the self-motivation mini challenge – I hope you did well with it! I’m not sure if I actually qualify for the bonus point drawing – I listed 5 items on Saturday but I listed them before I saw your mini challenge post. By the time I saw your post I had switched to prepping instead of listing.
ChristineR & Amatino: My store needs dusting too, I had 2 days last week with zero sales 🙁
Welcome Crystal! I thought I’d say hi as I see a lot of similaries in our stories. Until recently I volunteered at a thrift store for many years and your daughter’s experience there is the same as mine was. And I have a sister that I go on thrifting trips with too. Happy selling to you!
I have to chime in on the postage comments by Inglewood above. I had a customer contact me after receiving an offer to watchers from me for 25% off my asking price. (Keep in mind here that my selling philosophy is that I list my items matching the lowest listed price and charge only actual shipping to the customer.)
She said and I quote “Thank you for offering a tiny reduction in price. Unfortunately, it’s the shipping price to UK that’s the ‘killer’. If you can find a more cost-effective shipping option, then I might start to get interested.”
Umm, actually you are already interested if you are a watcher, but I got ahold of myself and answered:
“Wow, 25% must be a lot less in the UK than it is in the US, here it’s considered a great savings.” then I went on to offer to sell her the item on etsy since I was sure her inflated shipping cost was because I use eBay’s global shipping program, since I only charge actual postage. She replied: “As I said, shipping is the killer. Ebay is charging US $16.39! To be honest, this seems completely outrageous, and I thought UK postage prices were high. If I was sending this from UK to USA, I would charge approx US $6.00. That’s why I don’t use ebay shipping. I do my own international shipping. How much is your Etsy shipping to UK please?”
Well, etsy actual shipping was over $13.00 so I told her I assumed she wouldn’t be interested due to the actual shipping cost or over $13.00 and that was that. Not sure how she could send the item internationally for $6.00 US, maybe by pretending it was a letter?
What a great thread, hilarious! I’m envious, all I ever get is the “My husband just found out he has brain cancer, can you give me a lower price” stories. I always want to reply “You are brave to tempt fate for $2.00 off”.
Thanks Amatino! It was an Italian doll made by Sebino in the 1960’s. I have 5 or 6 more of them. 2 or 3 have the original boxes, so I hope those also sell for a good amount.
Thank you for the congrats Vintage Lacy!
Amatino you have the best sense of humor, you make me laugh with every post! Love you! And you doubled my number with your 10 listings, I only managed 5, so nothing there for you to have red cheeks about 🙂
I had houseguests starting last Thursday, they just left, so listing last week was impossible. The days before they arrived were spent getting ready for houseguests and now I’ll be doing the clean up from having houseguests so this week will probably be another low listing week for me.
The positive is I sold one of the dolls I mentioned a few weeks ago (items I was working on that take me a lot of time to prepare for listing – as an excuse for my low listing numbers most likely). The doll sold at auction for $405.00 and has been paid for! Yippee! My highest ever eBay sale.
So for sure I’m going to take the time to work on getting some of the other of the same dolls that I have ready for listing. On a side note I found that sold doll listing copied photo for photo and word for word as a BIN for $54.00 with free shipping from a zero feedback seller in Asia. They must just immediately steal listings for items that sell for over a certain price with over a certain number of watchers and put list as BIN then take the money and disappear from eBay. Of course when I found the copied listing I called eBay and they took it down.
Wishing everyone a great week!
Thank you for the info Jay! I guess if you have a search out on eBay you get it sent right to you by eBay, but good to know that it’s hard to find otherwise.
Okay, good to know that eBay does find these scammers on their own and takes the listings down. When I found the duplicate of mine it had been up for around 5 hours.
