Some fun sales from a while back. Prices do not include shipping.
Thought I hit the jackpot when I found these Louboutin sandals at the Salvation Army for $6. But when I went home and did a bunch of research, it became clear that they were most likely fakes. I was hesitant to list them, but took the risk and did it anyway, and took an offer the day after listing for $50. So it turned out great in the end, but I was nervous until the 30-day return window passed. Whew.
I almost always pick up Bennington Potters items when I find them cheap enough. These “trigger” handled mugs are one of their hallmark designs. Got this one for 50 cents. Sold 6 months later for $20 (sat for a while at $24.99).
Started looking for decorative hardware based on what I learned here on SL. This is the first set of drawer pulls I picked up. 8 of them for $1 at an estate sale. Made by Amerock. I priced them high, for $40, and was surprised to get tons of watchers for what I considered to be a fairly generic style. They sold 9 months later, fairly soon after I lowered the price to $27.99.
One of my most favorite finds and sales ever. I’m extremely grateful for having learned about vintage light bulb covers from Scott of The Old Curiosity Shop on youtube, b/c when I saw these at a rummage sale, I immediately knew what they were and grabbed them. Cost 25 cents, sold within a few hours for $55. Had some damage.
From time to time I ship packages from post offices that are 20, 35, or sometimes even 60 miles from my home, still using my same home return address when I purchase and print the labels – with no problem. I assume these far away locations are still in the same zone as my home address.
welcome!

Stuff will sell anyway, as long as the photos aren’t horrible. I don’t do any kind of editing for most photos, except cropping. For <1% of photos, I might use the lighter/darker adjustment. I’d love to try out some fancy (but easy) software to do color correction, but I’m too lazy to do the research to figure out which tool to use, and in the meantime, things keep selling. Of course, I do spend some time upfront changing around backgrounds if I see that the color is coming out completely wrong when I photograph an item on my usual grey background.
It would be much easier to answer your question if you posted an edited and unedited version of the same photo – but I ask this somewhat selfishly b/c I’m very curious as to what photo editing can actually do.
My vote is for abalone b/c of the bright colors. Mother of pearl is more whitish.
Thanks for the great backstory, Mike! Very cool info.
Some good sales from a while back. Shipping always extra.
My first and only Burberrys item – vintage knit tie. Purchased for $5 at a thrift shop, sold for $44.
Immediately after Ryanne mentioned (last fall) that you don’t find Pendleton board shirts anymore, I found my first and only one for $3 at a church rummage sale. Sold within a week or two for $80.
Watching Heather of the Paper Castle on youtube got me noticing flatware more, and this was probably my best purchase in that category. Oneida shell pattern with the cube logo. Purchased 6 place settings plus some extras for $15 at an estate sale. Sold overnight for $75.
Great looking house. Love the screened in porch! Gorgeous wood floors, etc.
Enjoy!08/11/2019 at 9:40 pm in reply to: Does anyone recognize the maker of this cased glass vase? Italian? #66241the center of the very bottom of the vase (the pontil) doesn’t look completely smooth to me. If it’s not super smooth, it’s almost certainly not murano.
08/09/2019 at 1:23 pm in reply to: Ebay's latest annoying feature? Overriding item specifics automatically #66141Not only does it auto-populate once, but it may change what it auto-populates after you’ve already checked over the item specifics to make sure they are correct. I started listing some Clarks boots, and it did a good job, auto-populating “Clarks” as the brand. Wonderful. Then later, I decided to add “crepe sole” to the title, and luckily I happened to see that it had changed the brand to “Sole” so I had to change it. Having re-check item specifics after editing the title cannot be what they had in mind. Or is it?
Welcome!
08/08/2019 at 10:06 pm in reply to: Do you ever tell another Ebay Seller that you found an error in their listing? #66093I typically message the seller when I see an error – my thinking is similar to yours, Sigilini. I don’t remember ever having received a response, though. I guess that’s better than an obnoxious response. I do appreciate when I get a message from someone pointing out my own error – these have been polite. So overall a good experience for me.
08/08/2019 at 10:01 pm in reply to: Ebay's latest annoying feature? Overriding item specifics automatically #66092Yeah, the new functionality is annoying. I liked the way that they had it before, where you could accept their suggestions or not – like Sharyn describes.
If you go to the tool, the last sentence of the posted message says:
Update 08/05/19: I have some unverified information that eBay removed the actual price from the data feed by mistake and that eventually they will fix the issue. So maybe there’s hope 🙂
I saw that message the other day and decided to try the tool anyway, and it showed me a sale price of $65 for an item that the ebay site shows as “sold for $75, best offer accepted”. I was expecting to see a price of $75 given the message that it doesn’t work anymore.
