Great tips! I’ll probably go with the sheet and hula hoop plan so I can have some light coming in.
I really would like to sell more tea pots! I figured my user name and store name Short and Stout Randoms would be perfect for tea pots. I just don’t come across good ones often enough! I picked this name because I’m short at 5’2″ and my last name is Stout 🙂
Update – spoke with ebay, they said that they will remove any negative feedback left because they used that in their message. Ebay rep also said that any initiation of return or refund would be done outside of ebay at this point since it is past the 30 day return period.
So….what to do now? Offer partial refund to make nice? Ask for pictures? Go silent like Jay? Any advice?
I hope that day comes soon for you guys! I ran across the 60’s Duck hunting vest listing.
I hope you get some good things in the box lots! I probably source about 60-70% of my inventory from auctions at this point.
Congrats on paying off your home! That is so exciting! The missions trip to Haiti sounds like a great thing.
I picked up some plastic car model kits at an auction and they sold quickly for about $30 each. So BOLO for vintage model car kits that haven’t been completed with all the parts. Both of the ones I got were from the early 1980’s.
Thank you again! I hope you start to feel better soon.
Last one of my online auctions for the “weekend” was last night….that one was a bust just for the fact that I had other things going on and didn’t get the notification that I was outbid on items until too late. I let all my lots go to save myself from an hour drive to pick up a $1 lot.
The other two did go well. I paid higher prices than I have been since I know there are high returns for some of the items and I am trying to focus on paying a bit more to get more $100+ listings. Some of my highlights are 2 Invicta Men’s watches, 1 Renato Men’s watch, a rubbermaid tub with 6 pairs of boots (two USA made Redwing, and a Sorrel) and two pairs of shoes, big box of English brass rubbings made in the 1960’s before the churches stopped allowing it to be done, some photo processing equipment, and some metal painted roosters that will be a Christmas present for my mom.
Next auction is a live auction on Sunday.
Thanks! It looks like in one of his other paintings where I could make out a bit of the signature, he signed his full first name. I’m going to see what this painting does as I would be interested in it for myself, but it is good to know that I likely wouldn’t get over $200 for resale.
My son is 8 and has started showing interest in what I do with eBay. He often comes with me when I go to thrift stores or auctions and usually gives me a good amount of time before his interest is no longer held by the process. My only saving grace at one particular auctioneer’s events is that they are family friends and the auctioneer has his son and my son run items when they are there. That keeps my son busy for most of the auction.
He does ask if something if for us or eBay quite a bit. He has asked to list some of his belongings as well. For now, I do the listing and give him the final profit. I figure that I’ll start really getting him involved around 10 years old and set him up as an employee so we can start putting money into a ROTH IRA account while he is young. Even if the tax rules change in his lifetime, the amount of time the money will have to grow will give him a nice little nest egg later in life.
Any info on an artist H. Fauvel? I couldn’t find anything in a google search so might just be a little known artist. This is coming up at an auction this weekend and I like it because, well, it has a goat.
Yes! The back to top button would be extremely helpful. Either that or freeze frame the navigation bar so it is always visible at the top of the screen.
I also do eBay part time and so far, what I haven’t reinvested in more inventory, I have used as fun money. That will end starting next year as we move into our mortgage after the construction period. I plan to funnel most if not all eBay money into paying off the house or investing. I’d like to get to the financially independent point in the next 5 years so I can switch to eBay full time.
If I didn’t have that goal, I’d use it to travel more….well, more within the time I get off from my job.
Oh! I also will be sending some of the eBay profits into our other hobby/future venture of hard apple cider! My husband’s family has a smallish farm and we are in the process of building up an apple orchard focusing on traditional cider apple varieties. We are in the process of making 60 gallons for this year for our personal stash. I’d like to get to a 9,000+ gallon level in 10 years which will require a big financial investment for another 1000 trees, fermentation tanks, climate controlled storage/fermentation building…..yeah. I need to sell a lot on eBay and eventually cider to get to my goals.

I’ve been looking at getting one of the pop up photo booth setups, but I haven’t been able to justify taking the step up into it when I seem to have decent results without it. I do plan on improving my setup when I get my office set up, but more just to have a cleaner background that I can do either white or black depending on the item.
11/14/2016 at 7:25 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 284: Where did you learn about money? #5738My parents and grandparents were good influences, but I think the issue of money was a side topic to that of work. When my brother and I wanted my parents to buy us something, my father would do the math and tell us how many hours he would have to work for it. Both my brother and I started working early and I had odd jobs starting around 10 years old then baby sitting around 13. I was never really a saver even though I knew it was a good thing. I’d only save as much as I needed for my next big want. I knew if I wanted things, I just needed to work. It wasn’t until recently that I found myself in a massive amount of credit card debt and started looking at personal finances seriously. My husband has always been a natural saver and we have held separate accounts for the most part. I would justify my spending and debt because he had our safety net. Then we went to build the dream home and I woke up to the mess I had made financially. I found Dave Ramsey and started to do the baby steps. Now I am addicted to personal finance podcasts like Afford Anything (Paula Pant – where I first heard J&R) and Stacking Benjamins that go farther into the financial independence space and actual depth over the just save principles. Now I have my eye set for savings and building up my FU money.
Moderate week for my store:
Total items in store: 177
Items sold: 3
Cost of Items Sold: $4.50 ish
Total Sales: $41
Avg. price: $13.60
Highest price item: $24.99 – Vintage NIB Italeri Volvo 760 GLE Model 1:24 Scale No. 651
International sales: 0
Money spent on new inventory: $445.11 on 3 watches and accessories – largest amount I’ve spent on any single item, but I’m hopeful that I can get it listed and sold for the Christmas rush.
Number of items listed: 0Had one customer issue from the last week where I sent a customer the wrong legs for a stool so it was more like a seller issue! Got the correct legs out to her the next day and provided a return label for the wrong legs since they go to another item I have. She seemed happy in the end and left positive feedback so more just a hiccup than anything. Next time, I’ll be sure to test the legs before I package them up.
I didn’t get much listing done, but I will have more time this week. I have the watches that I want to get up on Tuesday after I pick them up. Thankfully, they all have their paperwork of authenticity so I’m not too worried about VeRO. I have another auction tonight where I hope to pick up a bunch of boots so they will be up on Thursday after pickup. I need to get listing as my unlisted pile is continuing to grow 🙂
