Hey guys, so glad you did this; blogger was so limited. I know it’s a work in progress so here are a few suggestions:
1. The fonts on the site are hard to read. They are very thin, and too small in some places.
2. Yellow text on white background is impossible to read

3. I find the light green color used for links also hard to read

Just my 2 cents. Keep up the amazing work!

It’s definitely a work in progress. Good suggestions about fonts, colors, and sizes. These are all the details we need to work on.
–We also need to work on the mobile version of this forum.
–I’d love a link for “newest comments”, so you could see the latest ten posts without having to dig around for them.Anything else?
This is a good place to keep a running tab. -

Since you’re using bbpress, any chance you can take a look at enabling reply threading (nesting). Very difficult to follow a conversation when many are going on at once in the same thread. Also, my issue with bbpress has always been the massive amount of white space between replies. My fingers hurt after awhile with all the flipping. If your contractor knows how to resolve this, I would certainly like to know, regardless if you use it or not. Reply threading will help a bit.
Thanks

There is nested replies. This reply is an an example. We limited it to just two nested threads so the nesting doesnt become crazy.
And yes, to the idea of less white space. Josh actually sent us an example CSS file for this. On the list.
-
11/01/2016 at 7:25 pm #4733
You can reply to a comment by clicking “reply” on my comment. That creates the nested comment.

Also, if you’re not already aware, here’s a list of some cool uses of bbpress to find inspiration from.

We did see these. Is there one that you like the best?

Angry Birds 🙂
Personally, Blood Sugar Diet. I like my screen to be filled with as much information as possible. Two column format. Title on left. Top 3 or so threads on the right. Also removes 1 click from the process.
Also another suggestion. Locking down your header so you don’t lose it when you scroll down. I know it requires a little CSS code, but it sure helps. I don’t know why they don’t hard code this in. Almost all sites need it.

What about this forum: https://community.getbeans.io/
Its definitely super clean. -

I’m not sure (didn’t check) if they have any other customizations to the php/html that you’d have to mimic or otherwise sort out, but here are the css files the angry birds site is using. If you can somehow create a mirror of the site you can test changes on w/o messing up the live site, you could just plug these in and see if/how they work:
http://www.angrybirdsnest.com/wp-content/themes/abn-responsive/css/bbpress.css?ver=2.5.10-6063
This would help out a lot:

I see it now. I couldn’t tell since I basically can only can read only one post per page on my screen. I wonder if it has to do with the column layout. Too tight. Maybe why there is so much white space. Anyhow… You’ll figure out…. Trial & error.

I was looking for the reply button this morning. I now see it on the top right in light gray font that blends into the background a bit. Thanks for letting us know it exists.

Yeah, we need to make it more obvious.

Hey there! How about a section to post the WHAT SOLD VIDEOS?
-
11/02/2016 at 6:29 am #4760
Good suggestion. Because of how things are working, those posts will go under Podcast comments. The newest video will be posted later this morning.

Everyone might already know this, but if you click on the green link under Freshness that shows the time since last post, it’ll take you directly to the latest post.
-
11/02/2016 at 8:20 am #4786
Not sure if a plugin is available for this, but on a couple of other forums in which I’ve participated, there was something to click that would just show new posts since the last time you visited. It shows all the topics in one list, so you don’t have to click in to each section (i.e. Podcast Comments, Random Topics) to read the newest posts.

If this is now the place to keep a running tab of suggestions/feedback, here are mine all in one place:
1) I *love* the super-thin font. So easy to read.
2) I really like the clean and more compact format of the https://community.getbeans.io/ forum that Jay mentioned. Also like the “multiple pages” feature that they have, where replies to a post get split into multiple pages once there are a lot of them. This might obviate the need for a “newest comments” link, but I’m not sure.
3) Still really hoping that you will add a Like (but not Dislike) button.
4) Would like not to be left at the very top of a post page after I reply to a reply that’s far down the page.
5) Would like the option of getting email notifications of any nested replies to my reply, but not necessarily for all other replies to the post. This might be overkill in some forums, but SL reply streams (in the Podcast Comments category) tend to be very long because tons of people will post their numbers in a single post, and while I don’t want to be emailed every time someone else posts their numbers, I do want to know if someone replies to my posting of my numbers, or to my “what sold” posting.
Of course, over all, this new forum is fantastic! So grateful for J&R and everything they do.

Agree with Josh on all counts. The thin font and lack of contrast makes the site almost unreadable for my eyes. I appreciate your hard work on the new site, this change is good and will be a go-to resource.

Awesome new site… Super stoked for ya’ll. Keep up the great work. “Random Thoughts” sounds like my kind of chill spot.

Is it just me, or has the forum all the sudden become much more narrow. I mean it was already pretty narrow and non-adjustable to match window size, but now posts are at most 6-7 words per line.
-
11/03/2016 at 2:36 pm #4864
I’m not seeing that problem.
-
11/03/2016 at 2:38 pm #4865
So I was just playing with the width of my browser window. There is some kind of glitch that forces the forum section of the site to get more narrow for certain widths of the window. If you resize the width to what the forum actually is, it is fine. Then I start to widen the window. After I’ve widened it about 3″, the forum reduces in width about 40%. If I keep widening the window about 1.5″ more, the forum goes back to normal size. I’m using IE11 browser on a PC.
-
11/03/2016 at 5:30 pm #4872
Yep. I see that too. I think the forum has a responsive design so that it optimizes for mobile devices when the browser is small however there must be a range of widths that are accidentally being mobile-optimized.

I sent J&R a video of the glitch I’m seeing.

I’d imagine this is pretty unlikely but I noticed it was possible to customize the admin area. Is there any chance we could have a profile setting where we could customize the background of the forum pages to remove the “wood” background and replace it will a plain color. That would make it more work-appropriate for me.
Perhaps I need to figure out how to create a browser plug-in to make that kind of change.
-
11/14/2016 at 5:53 pm #5811
@Simon you should be able to do that w/ tampermonkey or greasemonkey or just by running this in the browser console:
document.body.classList.remove('custom-background')-
11/29/2016 at 6:57 pm #6843
Thanks for the suggestion @imjosh! I did exactly as you suggested and created a grease-monkey script to clear the background
(Though in the time it took for me to see your reply R&J have already changed the background to something a little more subtle anyway).
-
11/30/2016 at 6:42 am #6875
We have to have something a little fun on the background. Glad that script works to make it clean for office workers!

Hello, Glad to see a forum up. I enjoy your show! I just thought I would add my 2cents. I also find the thin font hard to read. The bright white background is abit overwhelming to the eyes as there is so much of it.
Maybe it’s just me but when I tried to register, the verbiage of the password creation screen threw me off. The button below where you make your first password says reset password. Maybe a create password button vs reset. Maybe it was me being ditzy but I messed it all up and had to start all over again. Thanks again for the forum.

Add a “like” or “thumbs up” button under each comment. That way when scrolling through feed you can pull out good points and insight and avoid armature suggestions or misinformation.

Not really a reply just trying to see if I can post comments after an epic screw up trying to set up user name and password. No I am not a robot, just a senior citizen!!!

Glad you made it over. I think we need to make the registration process more clear. Any suggestions on what was confusing?
-
11/05/2016 at 2:30 pm #4958
The most confusing thing was that my computer kept trying to use autofill to fill in my info. But it was an old service provider and I wasn’t paying attention and I clicked on it and….it was downhill from there. I don’t use autofill often and I don’t know why it still has the old info. Silly old me prefers to type in my info. Makes me use my brain instead of just blindly clicking keys.

How do you change your posting picture? I don’t see that info anywhere
-

I believe if you click your current icon twice, it’ll take you to Gravatar, which is the place that manages the images. Just upload and update your image.
We should create an explainer for how to do all this.

I think there needs to be a way for a member to delete their own posts/replies.
-
11/07/2016 at 5:22 am #5087
I think you can already do this. At the top of your post on the right hand side are several function links in light grey: “edit”, “trash”, etc.
Do you see these? Or am I just seeing them because I’m an admin?
-
-
11/07/2016 at 4:43 pm #5204
The option to edit only appears for a short amount of time (maybe 10 minutes)? After that, it goes away.
-
11/07/2016 at 6:13 pm #5232
That makes sense. I can “delete” posts because I’m the admin.
And yes, the “edit” feature exists for you for just ten minutes. It’s for any unintended errors.
It’d be weird if we could have a whole conversation and then you go back and edit your part to make the whole thing confusing.
-
11/07/2016 at 6:24 pm #5234
>It’d be weird if we could have a whole conversation and then you go back and edit your part to make the whole thing confusing.
Facebook does it by marking the post as “Edited at xx:xx pm” w/ a link that shows you the revision history.
Reddit does it by marking the post w/ an asterisk to denote that it’s been edited. Reddit convention dictates that you annotate your post like “edit: fixed a spelling mistake” if you make an edit.
Sites that don’t allow editing end up w/ a lot of self-replies to correct things.
Not sure what you forum software is capable of.
-
11/07/2016 at 6:39 pm #5239
I just added this to this list. We’ll see if the “edit” feature can stay on the page longer.

I don’t think it will actually be used often enough for the confusion issue to be a real problem. We had the delete option in the blogger format, and people used it fairly frequently, but only once did I see a situation where someone deleted a post that others replied to, causing a little bit of confusion. I hope there’s an easy way to make it so that you can edit any post or reply, and not just your latest one in a thread.
Just to throw out an example, I’d like to go back and edit my introduction post if I could. But since I’ve replied to your reply, I’d be stuck even if the edit option was available longer.

When viewed in portrait orientation on my Moto G4 in the Chrome browser, the Forum text wraps lines at the end of virtually every word so it becomes basically a stack of words down the right side of the white “page”. Doesn’t look like it’s wrapping at a specific character count. Text scaling is set to 100% in Chrome.

Little suggestion. When you go to comment it asks you to sign in but then takes you all the way back out to the home page. Can you make it to where you land back where you were? It’s sometimes hard to figure out what thread you were in and what person you replying to. thanks guys.
-
11/14/2016 at 6:23 am #5733
I’ve noticed this too. It is annoying. I see what we can do about it.
One workaround is to make sure you;re logged in before you start commenting.

Hi Jay and Ryanne,
Joining the chorus of voices that love the new site design overall. Two things I’ve noticed that would make it a nicer experience. I have searched the site several times to find topics. Search brings up whole posts and if it is a term that is used frequently, you have to slog through a lot of full posts to find what you’re looking for. If possible, it would be nice to have a truncated post that shows the relevant excerpt and a link to the full post instead. Especially troublesome when on mobile. I’ve seen this on other sites, but not sure if it is a feature of WordPress.
Second, when using a mobile device (android) in portrait mode, the words get crammed over to the right side and it only allows 3 – 5 words per line. Perhaps there is a way to make this more mobile friendly. Workaround is to turn to landscape mode.
Keep up the great work.
Mike

Agreed on search. I’ll see if we can’t just show truncated posts.
And yes, we need to make the mobile version of the forum dynamic so it resizes for the phone. It looks better on landscape mode.

Is it possible to show the date/time stamp on posts?
Another nice feature would be an easy way to see the threads with new posts since the last time I visited. One forum I used to frequent would make any threads with new posts BOLD FONT and all threads that have been viewed were standard font. Made it real easy to know what was new and what was stale.
-
11/29/2016 at 5:44 am #6789
Yes, I agree we need some feature that tells you what has been posted since your last visit.
We did a bunch of CSS changes, but we’re paying the web developer to do PHP functions. We’ll see what he comes up with.About the date.time stamp. Just curious why this is important. I find that it clutters up the post. I personally don’t care what time something has been posted.

Can you be a little more specific? All you need to do is link to wherever the photos live on the internet. Unfortunately we don’t have the ability for you to upload the photos here.
Many of us use https://imgur.com/ for free photo hosting.
