I’d look into Norwegian or Swedish. The second to last word looks like “Rjare” which google translate picks up as Swedish. It almost looks like there is a coma before the Rjare so it could indicate a location or another name.
I read “Marice of Justus onsker by ET Goat(or F) NY…..?”
onsker is Norwegian for wishes and Goat is a surname that comes from England. Marice is probably the woman in the photo with ET Goat or the photo was taken by ET Goat.
Steve – Like Brian said, you can get grout that doesn’t show the dirt or some that prevents staining. And good grout lines shouldn’t be too deep or have any cracks. In general, I find tile easy to clean and you can use a steam mop that really picks up the dirt. Sweeping is easy and pet hair tends to push to the edge of the floor like with wood.
I can understand keeping it for yourself. That is a beautiful piece!
I have been avoiding the part of town where my thrift store is for this very reason! The siren call gets too strong some days!
Thanks Jay! I estimate we are saving between $30k-$40k by doing some of the work on our own. Granted, we have done a large portion of the finishing work ourselves and still have a good deal to do. I keep hearing from people that they wouldn’t take on tile and it doesn’t seem too difficult. This is the third area I’m working on and I had never tiled before this. YouTube is a great resource. I love gleaning skills from online resources….like this one! I’ve always been an educational scavenger!
Brian, if you think the tile makes it feel like a sauna, check out this picture of our stairwell! Stairwell Sauna We are building a log home and a lot of the walls are the pine tongue and grove so we have the sauna feel all over. I think the wood look tile is a great option for bathrooms and brings a different feel to the room. We are going to carry the same tile up the shower walls and then use a pebble “tile” for the shower floor.
Yes, congrats on the project completion! Can’t wait to see the final photos!

Money Spent on new inventory: $0 – death pile challenge!Very low sales, but I haven’t been listing much so not very surprising. I was happy about the candy dish sale as it was one of my first items and I’m happy to move my glass items out. The shirt I sold came from my mom and sold over night. I was happy to get a little time to list the few things I did. I had to take time off work to wait for some tile being delivered and made sure I put it to good use.
I did some scavenging for the house as well. I found a dinning room light fixture on Craigslist for $100 that I’ll pick up once they have their new light in and replace it later this week. The web price on the light is $850 new. I’m keeping an eye out for other stuff as I still need more lighting fixtures and eventually furniture. I’m ready to get this house done to shift my focus back to eBay. I spent 13 hours over the weekend putting the tile down in the master bath. Here is the link to a picture of the progress for those who want to see tile progress. I feel for you Jay and your desire to go to the auction, but having to work on the house! I still have a lot of tile in my near future before I can take the time for an auction. Building new storage shelving and an auction or two will be my celebratory activities once we get to move in!
The house distraction works! At least for the buying side of the equation. 😀 This weekend was all about tile and I worked on that for 13 hours over two days so I didn’t get time to do much else. I did go and look at a light fixture that someone was selling on Cragislist, but that will be for the house. I had a thought that I could make a “quick” stop at the Goodwill, but I just went on home and put the hour into getting the tile down. It will be nice to get through the death piles when I can focus 13 hours on it over a weekend. Soon though, soon.
I started a separate account to sell postcards. I list the generic Economy Shipping option and charge a flat $0.50 for shipping. I indicate in my listing that they will be shipped via standard mail in a sturdy photo mailer. If the customer wants tracking, I up the fee to $2.60 and give them the first class mail option. Since it is a side account, I am just using the free 50 listings and I’m not worried about the no tracking hurting my seller rating.
I think you are right about the best prices coming just before the last day. I also wonder how deeply they would discount when they still have other stores they can redistribute the items to. I’ve done a little RA, but not with such great results that I have any plans to participate in this since my local Sears is not on the closing list.
I found this list of stores that will be closing and offering closeout deals soon:
Slippery slope indeed. I am home waiting on a tile delivery so I’ve been using the time to photograph and get a few things listed. If I keep my focus on the house jobs, I’ll be ready to get back to listing more sooner. I have an agreement with the hubby to not bring anything else into the house until I can clear a bit more out so I have you guys to keep me in check and also him to give me the “I thought you said….” look at home!
Ugh…Came across a local auction house that is going to be doing an auction of THRIFT STORE SURPLUS!!! That is a double dose of temptation! Thankfully it is on a Friday night and I have a new wood floor to prep for sanding that night. But seriously, thrift store surplus auction. I feel like Homer Simpson near a donut right now.
Congrats on the retirement! Yeah, at $2,200/month with a daughter in school, I can see the benefit of taking some classes. I was able to finish 1 degree while in the Army and got a second degree using the post 9-11 GI Bill a few years ago. I still have about 9 months of benefit left if I want a masters, but I just can’t justify spending the time plus, I can’t do over half time to get the extra BAH. That sucks that they wanted you to reenlist just to pass on the benefits. Well, I hope you find some good basket weaving courses!
