I haven’t had any issues with my carrier, but I haven’t had any more than 3 small packages left for them. We have a very long driveway and during the winter even the FedEx driver won’t come down it so I’m sure the mail carrier wouldn’t want to. If my package(s) won’t fit into my mailbox (I have a large one), I will take it to the post office on my way to work as it is just a few blocks off my normal route. I ask for a receipt from the post office as it makes them scan all items. My carrier also seems to have no problems scanning when they pick up as the times are usually consistent. If they ever start missing scans, I’ll just go back to dropping off at the post office as it isn’t an extra trip for me.
I don’t do this as I haven’t been making the time to list even the small easy stuff right now (but that should change soon), but I do know that I have good sales following even small listing pushes when I can do them. It sounds like a great way to keep the sales flowing when you are short on time!
I’m in. I can’t say that I won’t make a trip to the thrift stores, but I can easily avoid auctions and yard sales this time of year (they just don’t have many auctions and yard sales in the snow are about no.) I have plenty of piles of death around. I just got a small photo box light set up so I have some new motivation to get listing. Well, listing once some work in the house is wrapped up. That is currently our priority. Just wrapped up the painting, now working on putting down the flooring. Fingers crossed we are moved in by mid-Feb.
12/29/2016 at 6:32 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Colt Pistol grips, John Deere hat, Candle Snuffer, Star Wars books on tape #9067Just a few sales this week for me, but here are my highlights:
Ryman Auditorium Nashville TN T-Shirt – Paid $2 sold for $18 w/free shipping to someone back in Nashville. T-Shirt
Black Military Jacket with Liner – Paid about $0.50 at an online auction sold for $40 + shipping. Went to FL. Military Jacket
Pair of Redwing 9″ Insulated Boots – Paid about $10 sold for Best Offer of $85. This buyer had messaged me for the measurements as he typically wore a different size. I sent him pictures of the boots next to the tape measure and he responded back if I would be willing to do a Christmas discount. I had best offer on the listing so I was happy to send him an offer letting him know I could get it out on Christmas Eve if he completed the transaction that morning. Went to NJ. Redwing Boots

12/27/2016 at 6:35 pm in reply to: Customer Request Express Shipping After Paying For Parcel Select #8931I frequently “upgrade” from parcel select to Priority Mail without the buyer even asking. I find more often than not, parcel select price will be equal to or slightly higher than the discounted Priority Mail price. Ebay is still getting their fees off of the amount of shipping the buyer pays and I get the bonus of the insurance and faster arrival of the package. I just change the shipping method when I am printing the label. I haven’t had anyone ask for the upgrade, I just do it on my own. I have had no issues with eBay in terms of not charging the customer full price for Priority Mail. The way I see it, I’m not using shipping as a way to increase my bottom line and offering the lower cost shipping helps out the customer. I guess the only issue would come from downgrading a customer from the advertised shipping method.
I’ve used the magic eraser before and it works on leather soles and rubber. I didn’t find it to be overly harmful to the shoes. Just don’t rub too hard. My thrift uses a silver marker which is annoying, but I understand why it is done. I think you can try a few methods to see what you like and think works best. I doubt you will ever have a consensus on what to use.
12/27/2016 at 7:18 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 290: Experimenting with your eBay Store #8853I think it comes down to this…are you able to source and list more of the $1 items in the same amount of time than you can list the $25 item? Net profit on the $1 item is approximately $16 while the $25 item will net you approximately $63. You need to find and list 4 $1 items in the same amount of time to equal the profit of the $25 item. It is better to buy 5 $1 items you can list faster than 1 $25 item.
I don’t think it is always possible to source the $25 items that will sell for $100+, but we shouldn’t pass on the opportunity to buy it when it happens. The only other factor to consider is risk in tying up the money in the item. You have less available cash if you have a shed full of 100 $25 items rather than 500 $1 items.
I’d say most of my scavenger dreams revolve around the listing side. I have a long history of dreaming about a task I was focusing on intensely the day before, work or play. I think the bad dreams usually involve getting a huge batch of listings up to then see nothing uploaded or errors in everything. Ugh.
12/26/2016 at 8:46 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 290: Experimenting with your eBay Store #8838Store Numbers for the week:
(Main/T-Shirt)
Total items: 171/83

COGS: $11.50/$1.99
Total Sales (less customer paid shipping): $141.98/$17.99
Customer Paid shipping: $20.16/$0
Highest Item Sold: $85.00 Redwing Boots / $17.99 Ryman Auditorium T-Shirt
Avg sale: $47.33/$17.99
Net Profit: $119.70/$10.96 ($130.66 total)
International: 0/0
Returns: 0/0 (Still haven’t heard back from buyer who bought a watch a few weeks ago)
New items Listed: 0/4
Money spent on new inventory: $0Great conversation on the experiments. My second store was more or less an experiment even though my main store is still small. It is starting to pick up as I slowly add to the listings. I am almost through my t-shirt unlisted inventory so I will likely start sourcing a few shirts soon (I picked up 4 today for $2.50) just to keep things active. I wanted to see if I could get the volume up quickly and I can when I have time to spend on it. My goal behind the whole thing is to average a net profit of $10 with a 1-2% sales rate per week. The first month or two were slow (as was my main store), but even 1 shirt a week right now is meeting my goals and my net profits have been on target as well. It helps that I can get most shirts for $.49 at my local Goodwill on their sales day.
Pencil free shipping experiment update: No sales this week. Total views are still higher on the lower cost + shipping listing, but they are getting closer to even. No watchers on either listing.
I also set up a third account to sell postcards. Right now I’m working under the 50 free listings and will be listing a few postcards each week on auction to start. I will see how things go before I expand to a store. I set up the new account because I won’t be using tracking and I would like to keep my top rated seller rating in my main store.
As much as I don’t need more inventory that will sit and wait for listing, I am watching a local online auction for a warehouse clear-out that ends tomorrow night. They have 50+ pairs of shoes in one lot WITH a metal shelving unit (Nothing top end that I can see in the photos) and there are currently ZERO bids. Bidding starts at a penny. I’m going to have to keep an eye on it closer to when it is closing to see what happens. I don’t need the inventory and I won’t be able to go to the preview, but it will be hard to let those get by me for less than $5.
Does Paypal only create the 1099 after $20,000 or do they have it available for any amount? I’m just over $4,000 in sales, but I’m sure my tax person would like having the 1099 rather than my personal paperwork. This is my first year doing this, but I know I’ve reported other non-W4 and 1099 wages in the past.
12/21/2016 at 6:04 pm in reply to: What Sells on eBay: Yamaha stereo, Man from U.N.C.L.E. costume, Turntable, mismatched boots. #8598Those were some cool pieces! I love the ring!
My last sale was Saturday morning, but I can’t say things are slow for me. I don’t usually get sales every day so….maybe? 😀 I have 1 day shipping on all my listings so I think most people feel the cutoff has already started. I’m guessing things will pick up on Monday.
I plan to register for 2017. My state doesn’t charge sales tax on goods like clothing and shoes so it is really only the hard goods that I need it for. I just started this in 2016, and have limited sales, but I will be doing much more in 2017.
Just realized I missed adding some of the fun numbers—
main store highest priced item: $110 Renato 10 slot watch display case
T-shirt shop: Reebok Capitals Hockey Shirt $16.99
average price: $31.49/$15.99Yes, glad to hear that you are okay. Black ice is my worst driving fear.
I have started looking into Subaru as well. I currently have a VW Jetta Wagon Diesel that is under the buyback program for the emissions scandal. I plan to sell it back in April, but won’t need to buy a new to me car until February of 2018 so I’ll be continuing to look for a deal. I have heard great things about quality and safety of the Subaru brand and I know they are known for going 200K+ miles. My car has 150k on it now so I need something that keeps going.
