04/06/2020 at 8:54 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 457: Is it a good week or a bad week? #75929
The world is crazy. It is history in a way. Our kids be telling stories about how they survived the pandemic to their kids.
I started a new part time job this week. They want me to eventually get to full time, which I’m good with. This time, though, I’ll be saving at a much higher rate than I used to (after we replace my husband’s 21 year old car).
eBay didn’t do badly either:
Week of March 29 – April 4
* Total Items in Store: 1457 eBay, 37 Etsy
* Items Sold: 22 eBay
* Cost of Items Sold: $31.34 + $15.50 Commission
* Total Sales: $446.09 eBay
* Highest Price Sold: $55 Handmade purple wool felt dress hat
* Average Price Sold: $20.28
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
* Number of items listed this week: 6I listed six items this week. I listed two items with gold (real gold!) and one item with brass accents, so three so far for the challenge.
My low count is partly due to the new job I started. I didn’t do that many work hours, but I did have to set up my work computer and get things arranged. Also, my daughter and I went to her dorm room to grab everything else that she had left before spring break. She wants to transfer for next school year, so that might be the last time we are there, unless we have to return her books to the Barnes and Noble on campus.
As far as stuff I’m selling, very little can be attributed to the pandemic. I did sell a puzzle, 3 pounds of crayons (leftover from our kids), and some spools of elastic (the previous week), but everything else is the normal range of things that I normally sell. I see my fabric come up in “send offers”, but, strangely, none of it has sold.
To determine fabric content, you can do a burn test:

I agree that you should report listings with obvious price gouging. There is a link in the listing and it takes just a few seconds. eBay has stated that they will be warning or taking down listings with these issues. They have software that automatically searches out those types of items, but it doesn’t catch everything.
04/04/2020 at 1:38 pm in reply to: Hockey Pin, Stereo, Auto parts, Zenith Record player 8-Track Stereo, Vacuum bags #75838I have only done consignment for a few close friends where they are just looking to make a few bucks and don’t care whether they get top dollar or not. This is important because if they are “emotionally attached” to something, it could get dicey.
I charge 50% of the sale price after fees for eBay and PayPal are taken out. If someone gave me something more valuable, maybe $200 or more, I would consider a smaller fee. I had written out a consignment agreement at one time, and I listed a lower fee for valuable items. I’d have to find that document if you really wanted my breakdown.
In general, I don’t list consignment items worth less than about $15-$20. If I’ve already taken the photos and then find out I was off, I’ll list it anyway, but I would rather lot up a few items and price higher.
Most of my commissions are for a family friend whose wife passed away a little over a year ago. I used to do it for her, and now I’m helping her husband sell off her remaining stuff. Lately, he will go through her stuff and send me photos of what he has. I will say yay or nay, and he is saving the “yay” stuff for me. I was supposed to be visiting that area in May, but that is up in the air now. I still have lots of jewelry to go through. I didn’t realize how big of a collector she was. I think maybe she had a bit of a spending/hoarding problem.
Thanks! I think that gold & silver is worth more these days, but I’ll need to reduce the price I listed it at.
04/03/2020 at 11:24 pm in reply to: Hockey Pin, Stereo, Auto parts, Zenith Record player 8-Track Stereo, Vacuum bags #75815This group of Staedtler Mars pen stuff sold for $33. I paid about a dollar in a tools/machinist online auction at the beginning of March (before life got so crazy).
https://www.ebay.com/itm/184219087572I have been listing jewelry on commission for a family friend. These two sterling pendants, from a company called Sajen, sold for $89 and $85.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/184203219072I paid $12 for this copper framed mirror in an online auction over a year ago. I must have thought it would go for higher. It sold for $38.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/183596411510From my own shelf, I found this signed CD booklet from Queensryche. Sold for $40.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/184000312103A neighbor was throwing out a bunch of stuff in nice carrying cases. Actually, I think this was her son’s. I pulled it off the street the morning of garbage day. This is the first item to sell; a camera tripod for $21.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/184222233811Another balance scale from an auction in late February sold. It needs repair, but the brand seemed valuable and hard to find. Paid about $3, sold for $50.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/184222181172Jay or Ryanne – The link for “Post your What Sold video in the forum>>” is missing from Steve’s latest What Sold video. Could you add that in? I wanted to post my sales for the week 🙂
OK, I got another one. I have exactly this ring (but in Size 10) to sell. Can someone get me the date and price sold?

I happened to be listing jewelry on commission. Most of them are sterling, but I’ve got a few that are gold over sterling. I know that I have one ready to list that is white gold. Then, I might have some costume jewelry that is gold in color. I should do OK with this challenge!
Last night, I was thinking about those 50,000 free listings and realized that this would be a good time to end older listings and re-start them (sell similar). Normally, you would have higher costs in a month if a listing just renewed, and then you end it and restart it. With the free listings, though, the fees are waived. I did 200 listings, and I might do another 200 later on. Something for everyone to think about.
The auctions around me are also going to online formats. The first is not offering box lots, and the pickup information is not well communicated. So, I will skip. The second one will be starting up soon, and I’ll have to see how it goes.
My sales picked up from last week, and they are continuing to stay lively.
Week of March 22 – 28
* Total Items in Store: 1432 eBay, 37 Etsy
* Items Sold: 20 eBay
* Cost of Items Sold: $44.10 + $87.60 Commission
* Total Sales: $552.50 eBay
* Highest Price Sold: $89 Sajen Sterling pendant, $85 Sajen Sterling pendant (both are commissions)
* Average Price Sold: $27.63
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
* Number of items listed this week: 20I listed 20 items this week.
I did not list any Halloween items. I didn’t have anything ready to be listed, and I didn’t find anything interesting at the auctions I went to before life as we knew it ceased to exist.
I just started a job this week, of all things, so my numbers will stay lower from here on out. It’s great, though, to restart my career.
Here is the link to eBay’s Report an Item page, if you wish to report price gouging.
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/reporting-price-gouging-ebay?id=5105I went ahead and reported the Lysol one since it automatically popped up.
Thanks Almasty & Mike!
I do commissions for a friend of the family, and I’m currently going through his late wife’s jewelry. Most of it is sterling, and the prices and brands have been pretty easy to research. However, when I saw one stamped “14K PJS”, I figured I needed to do a bit more research. Except for the Worthpoint one, I only found ones for sale. Asking prices are $400 & $150. For a $400 price, I’d consider getting an appraisal, but, for less than $200, I’ll test with my home kit and assume the one I have also has a Tahitian pearl and several small diamonds.
Thanks, Almasty! Does it give a date when it sold?
