Without seeing a photo or knowing the dimensions, size 16 is often a youth size, but a larger youth size. I think boys clothing tops out at size 18 or 20, and girls ends at about 14 or 16.
10/18/2018 at 8:54 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Hats, Light fixtures, Shoeshine box, Inarco Collie figure, Barbie costume, WWII Army trunk, Siamese cats TV lamp #50402Steve – I sold my first shoe shine box on Oct 9, and then I saw you sell one a few days later!
Mine was in not such good shape, but I did include the dried out polish. I don’t know, but I figured people buying the box might be interested in the advertising on the old containers. Anyway, I didn’t do so well on it. I paid $4 and sold it for $15.71.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183287823316Here’s something I did better on. In August, I went to the last day of a rummage sale where a bag of clothing was $5. I bought this men’s suit (I believe custom) made in Canada for about 75 cents. Sold it for $53 through the GSP, and it is going back to Canada.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183397609565Another thing going to Canada is a lot of four books from the 1800s. They were part of a table lot at an auction. I paid about $1, and they sold for $26.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183347913454This framed print was purchased in an online auction. The auction company’s service provider had a server issue after the auction started to end, and people couldn’t put in bids. I probably should have had competition, but I bought it for the minimum bid of $1. It sold for $43.

What a great spelling error, though! This might be a situation where an auction might be in order. Start with just one at a good price for a similar puzzle, and see where it goes. Make sure to highlight the error!
I would list them separately, only dinner or salad in a listing. The only time I’ve listed different types together is when I get a few random pieces in a box lot or a few odd remainders of a set.
I was going to suggest the same thing. The only time you might consider selling as a set is when you have a full set of of at least 8 place settings; however, who would want to ship that? Maybe you could sell that as a local pickup?
Friends of my parents gave me their set of dishes When they bought a new set. Here is an example of one of my listings:
In regards to the online auction company MaxSold, there are a variety of situations for the auctions they hold. Yes, some are run by auction houses or professionals that are selling for a profit. Some are run by people hired by estates or home owners to get rid of stuff. However, many are individual home owners who hire directly with MaxSold. I don’t consider those to be as professionally run as an auction house. The MaxSold employee skill seems to vary in quality, so treasures can be found if you look closely.
Anyway, I am finished with cataloging my friend’s stuff for her online auction (through MaxSold), but I have to review and adjust the listings as needed, set up the auction, and then help during pickup. In the situations above, you can consider me as someone hired to get rid of stuff, and I will get a cut of the proceeds.
Here are my numbers for last week. Sales are slowly climbing back up:
Week of Oct 7 – 13
* Total Items in Store: 1166 eBay, 13 Mercari
* Items Sold: 10
* Cost of Items Sold: $11.85 + $6.86 Commission
* Total Sales: $230.31
* Highest Price Sold: $53 Men’s wool suit made in Canada
* Average Price Sold: $23.03
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
* Number of items listed this week: 28Sally – You seem to have a neat way to look at life, from the way you write up your item descriptions to your discussion of your story. I’m looking forward to reading your Sallytrek Log. I think there will be plenty to learn and hear about!
You can certainly add creepy and similar words to the title – people do look for that sort of thing, even if you don’t want to say it is haunted.
I don’t know if you are interested in any advice, but there has been talk on the forum that symbols can prevent your item from appearing in search results. What I’ve read is that the first five or so words in the beginning of your title is collected by the search engine. Any words after a symbol are cut off. So, starting your title with 25″ might not be such a good idea. Also, you might want to move the (?) to later or use the word “unsure” if you have the room.
Just some thoughts and ideas. Last month, I changed Cabela’s to Cabelas in one of my titles, and the item sold later that day!
10/15/2018 at 5:58 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 380: What Do Lifetime Sales Really Mean? #50206I prefer to keep my drive to about 40 min or less, but, occasionally, I will do up to an hour drive. Anything more than that, and I pass. I am also more willing to drive south and west (south NJ or Philadelphia) than north (north NJ or NY). Actually, I’ve never driven to NY for an auction pickup. Apart from the traffic, I would have to pay a toll to go over a bridge.
I totally agree on the hidden treasures. MaxSold is more interested in getting the stuff out in a short period of time rather than photographing and documenting all the details. And, yes, I’ve had the experience of being outbid on the things I wanted and having to pick up a few ordinary items. Sometimes I will look at the order of the auction and decide not to bid on some ordinary items earlier on, and I’ll wait and see if I win the interesting stuff first.
I’ve bid on two other online auctions, and both ended up in no purchases. The first was with govdeals.com, and the seller decided to pull out of the sale. The second was through auctionzip.com and would have been a pickup in Manhattan. I really didn’t want to do the drive, but the items were so good and no one was bidding ahead of time. I’m used to MaxSold that does see some action in the days or hours leading up to auction time. In this one, the bidding took off just a few minutes before each item’s end time, and, after losing several lots, I just let myself be outbid on all of it.

10/15/2018 at 4:46 pm in reply to: Trash Elf Twins Challenge 2018 Thread #3 From Week 31 August #50203Amatino – Ah, I just saw all the zeros and missed the latest column!
I ramped up a bit this past week! I listed 28 items, about 7 were death piles.
I’m slowing down now on my friend’s online auction. Just a few hours ago, I photographed the last of her lots, and now I have to submit the draft. For some reason, the auction company’s app won’t let you edit listings that are more than a few hours old. So, when I get the draft file, I’ve got some editing to do. After that, and my friend checks it out as well, we’ll submit the final and schedule the auction!
I’m glad to move forward on this project so that I can get back to eBay!
10/14/2018 at 12:03 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 380: What Do Lifetime Sales Really Mean? #50124I’m in a busy suburb; in Central NJ about an hour drive from NYC and 1.5 hours from Philadelphia.
10/13/2018 at 8:49 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 380: What Do Lifetime Sales Really Mean? #50118In reading through this discussion of online auctions, I realized that the type of auction affects your experience. I’ve looked at or even placed bids on the type of auctions where the prices seem to go to ridiculous amounts. I like a company called MaxSold, which appears to be a bit different.
Their idea is to sell everything, from the cleaning supplies under the sink to antiques to cars and everything in between. Many times, they will list “contents of the linen closet” or “everything on these two shelves”. More valuable items are listed one at a time just like the other auctions, but I don’t think their photography is as professional.
What I try to do is look carefully at the lots and find items people aren’t interested in locally, but might be to a larger eBay type audience, or lots that aren’t properly described by the MaxSold employees. Also, if I decide to bid on something interesting in an auction, I might take a chance on something no one wants because it might have something hidden in there of interest.
Here is an example:
https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/8056/item/vhs-dvd-and-more-a-751789/
In the fifth photo, a portable CD player (which didn’t work properly) is sitting on top of a cassette holder. That cassette holder ended up being the brand that was often modified and used as a engineer’s kit in Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Next Generation. I sold it for $90 to someone in England. This lot also had a significant number of Bruce Springsteen CDs, DVDs, etc. that were not shown in the photos, and I sold as a group to a fancy thrift store in MA for around $40. I still have stuff from this purchase listed. I won the lot at the minimum bid of $1. I’ve bought many lots for $1 that ended up as nothing sellable, but all I lost was $1 (actually $1.10 with the premium).Here is another example of a box of junk, but there is a vintage Trapper Keeper notebook right on top. I sold that for around $45 to someone in Guam. I think there might have been one or two other items in there that I was able to list. The rest were donated or trashed. Again, I paid the minimum bid.
https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/5370/item/mugs-and-more-a-535460/Here’s one more that wasn’t accurately described, but I did pay $45. The listing mentions that there are Pantone color guides, but doesn’t mention how old they are or how many are included. There were around seven, and they were from the 80’s (and one from the late 60s). I sold each one for between $25 to $45. There were many other items in this purchase that I was able to list.
https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/5280/item/art-supplies-a-503015/I guess that the point I’m trying to make is that the regular auction sites that only list the good stuff are leaving out the weird and quirky stuff that many of us look for. I can’t imagine that there aren’t other auction companies besides MaxSold that does this, but MaxSold is in many locations within the US and Canada.
I’m actually on the other side now helping a friend set up an auction so that she can downsize and sell her house next year. I’m making sure that everything is photographed and described properly. From all of my experience with this company, I know that some bidders will get caught up in the process, and some items will go pretty high. Some will go for the minimum bid of $1 or not get sold. In the end, it will average out and she will get a good price for all her stuff.
Anyway, I just wanted to put in my two cents about my online auction experiences. I also have had very good experiences with live auctions as well. Weekends usually revolve around family, so I have limited time for garage and estate sales (although, my online auction pickups are usually on a Saturday or Sunday).
With this big wall of text, I think I’m supposed to offer a 50 cent cup of coffee at this point, or something like that :).
Your photo did not post properly. In order to post photos to the forum, take a look at the instructions here:
https://www.scavengerlife.com/forums/topic/how-to-upload-a-photo-to-your-forum-post/You know, my usual supplier of bubblewrap was not offering its usual deal, so I bought from SupplyHut. When I got it, I thought that the rolls were not as wide as what I usually get, but I can’t remember how many rolls I normally receive. SupplyHut sent four rolls, but I’m not sure whether I usually get three or four.
Anyway, it’s still sealed. I have no idea how I can count up the sheets or determine if I have the linear feet that they promised.
I had a slightly better week than the past two, so I can at least talk about an interesting sale or two.
I was able to date this plate to the mid 1800s! But, just because something is old, doesn’t mean that it’s valuable. I paid maybe $1, and it sold for $16.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183264243415This is the highest value item I sold maybe in two to three months. This is a painting of a mother and child. I took a lower offer than I would have liked, but I was hungry for a sale. I paid about $37, and it sold for $110.
