My 2¢
Form 1099 from PayPal, the way my accountant has handled this over the past 10 years, shows gross (total) sales; everything buyers paid to eBay for our items. This is gross income. The amount charged to buyers for shipping isn’t relevant, its the actual amount we pay USPS, UPS, etc. for shipping that is the business shipping expense. PayPal fees are also an expense, along with eBay fees and many other expenses of selling. It can get more complicated, but those basics stay the same.
My 2¢
You don’t “file” a form 1099, that is the form received from another party to report funds they paid to you. If you get any 1099s, those were also filed with the IRS. That doesn’t mean you owe taxes on that amount, this is only your gross sales before expenses. Regardless of receiving Form 1099 or the number of sales, you still need to file taxes on your business income (or loss).
Please do talk to an accountant to get your head around this. It’s not all that complicated, just something new to absorb. You can also ask the accountant about doing cash-based accounting, which is going to be easier. Basically, that means everything you made in income minus all your expenses (including merchandise purchases).
Start keeping a notebook on your purchases. You may not have receipts for things bought at yard sales, etc, but the IRS is generally going to accept “contemporaneous records” for small businesses. All that means is you wrote it down at the time (date, description, price). Also, do that for vehicle mileage and other expenses.
Don’t panic, you could end up showing a loss for your business, if so then that amount comes off the other joint income you have.
Lastly, don’t take everything you read online as fact, including what I am suggesting. You need expert advice, free advice is only worth what you pay for it.
My default sort is the newest first but if I want to look at old listings I reverse that. If you don’t have the “Start Date” column you can add it using the Customize link, then clicking on that heading changes the sort order.
My SKUs are Brand_PartNumber but I don’t suppose that’s going to help most sellers here. I have all brand names grouped in my stock, I can find orders fairly quickly just using the SKU and that SKU is used to sync inventory across multiple marketplaces.
I’ve never had a problem with buyer requests to change address, and do it unless it affects the shipping rate, or unless I’m getting a strange vibe from the message. In those 2 cases I nicely ask them to cancel the order, edit their address or add an address, then repurchase. I’ve had a few of those cancel and not reorder, oh well. I don’t know what the official rules are since I’ve never had a problem with the address changed orders.
@marylibrarian, that pretty much describes my girlfriends auction a few weeks ago. She’s selling her farm and drastically downsizing. A box of Fiestaware went for around $12, I understand that used to be quite desirable.
I agree with the Sell Similar concept. Unless this has changed from last time I looked, end and relist carries over the impression and click history, which is likely to be poor, where end and Sell Similar is actually a brand new listing.
One big gotcha with this method, if you initially had multiple quantities on a listing and sold some, the new Sell Similar listing will revert to the initial quantity.
My dilemma is taking time to do this instead of listing new items.
I have held the opinion for years that eBay pushes more sales to sellers who are actively listing. I’m not talking about the initial sales boost of items just listed, I see old items selling better when I am actively listing. I don’t have records to prove this, but it has happened to me so many times that I have come to believe it. I don’t understand or have a theory for why this would be the case, other than I have seen it too many times to believe it is coincidental.
Ok, you can stop rolling your eyes and looking at me funny now. List more, sell more.
joeMEZZ, that looks like a cool lamp for getting rid of the shadows I sometimes get with my setup. Thanks.
After you are rolling on the most profitable stuff you might want to look at parting out printers too.

For what it’s worth (nothing), Amazon seller support is even worse.

I use ShippingEasy, primarily so I can do shipping from all marketplaces in one place while easily picking the best shipping service, but also because of how I can streamline my shipping process.
The efficiencies are well worth the monthly fee, and the dimensional Priority Mail rate saves me more than the monthly fee. There are other advantages, but I tend to just expect that from a provider whose primary business is shipping labels.
I already enjoy many of the wish list points mentioned in this thread. I realize this isn’t for everybody, but it’s something to keep in mind to ease the pain points.
