I am needing to list in the dark lately in my dining room. I’ve noticed the youtubers are using those ring lights. Is anyone using these for item photography? If so, how did it go? I’m getting a terrible glare from my dining room table chandelier and don’t want a big permanent set up with umbrellas. I think I can live with the ring light put away in a corner though. Thanks.

Sometimes less light is better.
I now use a BIG LARRY and just move it around until the item looks nice
Works great with small stuff using white poster boardsLike this: https://imgur.com/a/sQAzzFk

joeMEZZ, that looks like a cool lamp for getting rid of the shadows I sometimes get with my setup. Thanks.

@Mezz that would be worth trying. Really easy to put away. I don’t like evidence of Ebay in my living space but we don’t have basements in Cali and I don’t have a spare room either. @Amatino I’m so lazy I don’t even want to take down a lightbox over and over. When I have time for Ebay, it gets abruptly interrupted. Thanks for the replies.

Have you considered a lightbox? I now have two, the ESDDI that I got from Amazon (although I recommend the Amazon version, it seems to have resolved the issues I have with the ESDDI) and a little one that looks like this but I found mine on eBay. Between the two of these, I can get most anything except clothes done. For big items, I use the 24″ box and just open the front and one side, then take photos from the diagonal angle. Works great!

Lukas – I bought the ESDDI because it was a lightning deal, got it for around $60 delivered and it has been a game changer. There are several issues with it that made me realize the Amazon one was a better buy. They’re incredibly easy to set up and take down, offer a myriad of options, and my photos, with a little editing, tend to come out terrific. The fault in my photos lies in my camera, not the set up.
However, it is a chunk, at 24″. So I bought a little one for smalls and it’s perfect desktop size. It sets up so fast and for little items like sewing machine feet or saucers or a cellphone cover, it’s the best. I wondered if buying two was overkill, but now I’m glad I did. If I had a do-over, I’d buy the Amazon 24″ and perhaps a 12″ small instead of the 9″.

Sometimes, for somethings – perfect photos make them look like
1) stock photos, which people do not like or
2) commercial photos, which can make you appear to be a large business instead of having a “garage sale” feel.
I realize it depends on the item and the buyer which works better, but be aware – to develop a feel for it.
My point is that sometimes an item on a hardwood floor, or a white table with natural light works great.
If your selling multiples of a new item, maybe you’d want a perfect photo.
Just my opinion, for what it’s worth.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money on lights and backgrounds. Don’t under estimate the great camera in your phone.

A key to no shadows with ring lights is to use more than one. I use two right now but I think I might bump it up to 3 and add one directly above the item.
