Old Dad,
Yes, it seems then that auto parts are very similar to everything else you sell on ebay. Easy to find items are high demand, but lower price\return. Unique items are harder to find, but sell for more and get more profit, but long tail.
Thing is I can find long tail items fairly easy. Not sure how you would find long tail auto parts easily. I guess it is all in the places you go and look.
My thrift store has some new in the box front coil springs for Bronco/F150, but they want $60. I think I could only get about $135-$150 so I don’t think it is worth it. Plus, I don’t know what year they are for. I have gone to a junk yard near me where you take the parts off the car yourself. They are very reasonably priced. The problem is most of the cars are late 90’s till about 2010. Not new enough at 2010, and not old enough at the other end. I suppose the right car would do, but they mostly have Taurus type cars, etc. Plus, it is a lot of work to pull the parts.
I have had some luck with wheel locks, do you sell those?

Dang, now that is taking the strapping tape seriously!
But I suppose some of those car parts you ship out could get quite large. What is the heaviest part you have shipped out?
I really like your idea of an auto parts store. That really struck a cord with me. I do have some auto parts, but I am not doing it to your scale. Not sure how to navigate the auto parts liquidators! I would guess that the most common parts that fit the most vehicles would be the best selling? Maybe not. I would also guess those unique parts like Steve S. sells for the Mustang would be great, but where would you find those?

Yes, I have been shipping a lot more stereo equipment lately. Some of these get into the 30-40 pound range and that is a lot of weight for a box.

Looks like some of these had errors in the original packaging making them worth more. However, i dont see that in these listings. Maybe people just think they are valuable.

Ryanne,
You said you were having issues with Smartpost labels (and I assume Home delivery and Ground). Yes, they do not fit on the page. My work around is to go to Settings (or More Settings) and change the size percent from 100% to 88%. Then, the label fits on 1 label (1/2 page). True, the label is about half size, but hey, it does work.

Yes, it is one of those items you normally don’t use all the time, but sure nice to have it when you need it.

simplicio,
That must be a Canadian thing to save taxes using an LLC.
An LLC here in the states will save you money, but you would get the same from just a sole propietor (hope I am using the right terminology.)

I have seen a marked increase in the overall price (ASP) of the items I am selling. Starting Sunday, I am also seeing an increase in the volume of sales (STR). I hope this trend continues and this becomes the start of the rush to Christmas.
Challenge of the week: Finally bought all of my supplies. I picked up the final boxes yesterday. I got free 240′ X 12″ bubble wrap from Sams Club because I have been trying for a week to get bubble wrap from my local store.
Scavenge of the week: Got a nice pair of LL Bean Virgin Wool Boots for $2.

This is another good reason to use Business Policies to set up Shipping as a policy.

Mike,
Most of the companies on the list I have never heard of. But, Levis is on that list. I never heard that before. Are they really going to police people selling levis?

It seems counter intutive at first to split the clubs up because hey, i have a nice set here. But i guess few people want to pay that much for the whole set. In my case, i thought a near antique set would be worth more as a set, but no.

Gut Sales Report for the week: Decent Sales. Just a lot of returns.
Challenge of the week: Getting all of my supplies ordered and filled up in preparation for the busy season. Seems like the longer I am in this business, the more supplies I need. The $150 in supplies from ebay from having an anchor store is really helping. I sell a wide range of items and I need some very large boxes in non-standard sizes. I like stocking up and getting ready, it makes me feel that I can handle anything that comes my way now.
Scavenge of the week: I bought some really old golf clubs in a bag. I was going to sell them as a set, but it turns out I can make a lot more by spliting everything up and selling them separately. I paid $17 for the whole bag, and my total listing price by separating it all out is $376. Not the easiest way to do it, but definitely most profitable. Jay recommended this method to me and it is a winning approach.
