I agree 100% with what Sonia is saying – don’t ask for permission – just do it if you are going to do it, and then apologize afterwards (You can tell them there was an error in the listing, perhaps offer another item in your store at a heavily reduced price as a “concession” and be willing to take a negative).
I think if an item was worth up to $150 I would just send it and eat it – a rookie mistake.. move on. If you are talking $500-$1000, I think I would cancel the sale. Somewhere in between there, I would probably be asking people on here what I should do 🙂
Let us know how it works out… and good luck!Hi bcfol440,
Regarding your smelly items – I have had good luck by describing the item as usual and then stating “This item has a faint vintage aroma (ie: smokey) or (ie: musty)”
You are disclosing the smell, but somehow this makes it sound a little less sinister. Not sure what I would do about moth balls. I had some plush items once that smelled moth bally and very musty that I did not want to throw away, I lightly misted them with 50/50 alcohol and water mixture until completely damp and let them dry completely in the sun – they still smelled weird, but better – then I dusted them with baking soda (the next day once completely dry) and sealed them up in ziplock bags, shook everything up good, and let them sit for about a year and forgot about them, LOL, when I remembered to take them out of the bags and vacuumed the powder off of them, I was amazed the smell was completely gone – they smelled like new!

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $60
Number of items listed this week: 12Not much to say, it wasn’t a great week, sales-wise but I also didn’t list very much. I bought a set of Mid Century dining room chairs at a good price I am going to try a local pick up on. I also ventured out to a new charity thrift store that was in a questionable part of town, but going inside was just the kind of place that I love and hopefully will provide some new cool inventory. The volunteers were wonderful and I am getting really bored with Goodwill, it’s just easy to go there when I have my 4 yr old and 10 month old with me.
Hope everyone has a great week of sales!
What a fantastic story! 🙂 Thanks for sharing it! This is why I love (and sometimes hate) the Goodwill Bins – I have had my two most expensive sales from there (An MCM sculpture – paid $3.00 sold for $550 and a 1970’s painting – paid $3.00 and sold for $400) these finds happen every once in a great while and they are so exciting! You never know…
I would list it as “Womens Juniors Shortalls Corduroy Bib Shorts Overalls Size 5/6 28 inch waist”
Hi Ryanne, Yes, with free returns I have the option to not fully refund…even for INAD. I see a drop down list that says refund “10%” “20%” “30%”…all the way to “100%”… actually in the opposite order.
Also want to mention, I did NOT receive the “request for buyer feedback” option that ShoeGuy mentioned, but is has been a few weeks since my last INAD/free return – so that must be a new thing. I think that is a GREAT idea!
Hi Joshua,
Thanks for the reply…Good advice about going to see a furrier, dried out leather, and getting them cleaned. I don’t even know where a furrier is in my town – but there should be one around and I think that would be interesting to visit a fur vault and talk to an expert. I think the one I picked up has been improperly stored for so long and unfortunately IS quite dried out. I definitely don’t want to invest $45 to have it cleaned. I will hopefully be able to sell it for a costume or prop…. Best of luck with your 3 furs!
-SharonSo glad you are feeling better, Ryanne!
My Store Week August 26-Sept 1, 2018

Cost of Items Sold: $25.72

Average Price Sold: $23.37

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $62
Number of items listed this week: 42Glad sales were a little bit better this week than the last two weeks – I cannot wait for Holiday Sales to come our way! Still – so many low ball offers to fend off this week. I was able to hit two interesting garage sales – one was an estate sale where the kids were trying to offload everything from their late dads house. There was a “Free” box filled with trucker hats … a lot of them.. probably 50.. all from the 80’s. I took that and ran! LOL.. I actually gave them a $1.00 for the box because I felt like it was supposed to be a “One free hat per person” deal… but I wanted all of them. When I got home, I realized they were in distressed condition (some of them) – so I washed them in the machine on delicate and air dried them and listed most of the better ones. Hopefully some of the rarer ones will sell for some money, but nothing yet – I know it is a long tail item. The other sale had a lot of vintage 1950’s items (more hats and vanity items and dolls, etc.) I bought some things and picked up a full length mink coat for $10 – vintage, no tag. It has a little bit of mildew on the inner satin lining I am going to try to remove with water/vinegar and then see if I can sell this thing. Anyone have any luck selling vintage furs? Personally not my cup of tea, so I better make a couple hundred bucks off this thing! (I think they are gross!)
I hope everyone has a good week of sales and looking forward to listening tonight to the podcast. Welcome back!!!
08/28/2018 at 1:34 pm in reply to: Question on the Hassle Free returns and Supporting Photos on a Return #48101Hi Mike,
If you haven’t already, I would recommend waiting until the very end and then “accepting” the return no matter what. You don’t want eBay to step in and do it for you because then they will refund him and he’ll be able to keep your item. At least make him send it back (if you indeed want it back you will be out the shipping and possibly receive a broken item). If you don’t want to lose shipping $$ then just refund him – but that is up to you. Based on the accusatory tone of the customer’s email – it sounds like fishing to me! It is also possible that the buyer dropped the item or damaged it on his own and is hoping to get his money back. You will never know exactly what is going on. I removed free returns from all my “Really Heavy” items so I don’t have to deal with this. I hope you don’t get a negative. Block and report the buyer. Go have a cup of coffee 🙂Hi Ryanne,
Hope you feel better soon – missing the podcast is like missing my favorite TV show – guess I’ll have to listen to reruns this week! 🙂 I’ve got a minor sore throat too – but I think it is a cold not strep – still sucks though..Here are my numbers:
My Store Week August 19-25, 2018Total Items in Store: 1122
Items Sold: 13
Total Sales: $250.23
Cost of Items Sold: $20.49

Average Price Sold: $19.25

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $20
Number of items listed this week: 30Hope everyone has a good week… I’ve done a lot of experimenting with Promoted Listings these past few months and I have tried all different percentages ranging from 3%, 5% all the way to 20% (which is ridiculous.. but at times I was feeling desperate.) I can say that I have gotten MORE sales with using a lower percentage (3% to 5% range) rather then “trending rates” or “trending + x%”.. go figure… I do see an uptick in sales with promoted listings but from now on, I’m sticking to lower percentages (not more than 5%) and will be trying to only use this feature if there are multiples out there of whatever I have listed. We’ll see what happens. I don’t want to throw money away for nothing, even if it is only a small amount.
On another note, does anyone else see under Tasks on their Seller Hub Overview Main page – “Match with eBay catalog product or provide valid product identifier” ? I have a handful of these on vintage electronic items like old Dryer Cords and parts that do not have UPC #’s. My only option is to submit a new entry into the catalog – which I attempted to do. It was an annoying and painful process. I had to select “Does not apply” for many fields and then submit detailed pictures – it took several minutes and then… my submissions were denied the next day because the photos were not what they were looking for ?!? So, I doubt I’ll be making any more submissions. Not sure if I should ignore this task (which is what I have been doing) or if I should remove the listings – (if it is going to lower my search ranking in some way) – but for now, doing nothing.

On the top row of my ebay home page screen there is a “My eBay” dropdown if I click on that and select “Selling” then it will take me to “Seller Hub”. Is that what everyone else sees when you log in? I am just curious after reading this thread. (I am not part of the ‘initiate best offer pilot’, but will be on the lookout for it.)
Thanks!Loved the story about finding the expensive copier part in the trash!!
Well, let’s get this over with because it is pretty painful… slow week… school started… not enough time to do much listing… sales were way down for me.
My Store Week August 12-18, 2018
Total Items in Store: 1105
Items Sold: 5
Cost of Items Sold: $4

Average Price Sold: $21.28

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $35
Number of items listed this week: 14Hello.. we can see this page, just letting you know!
I once scored 8 pairs of these PRL Andrew shorts in a Salvation Army in tan, blue, black and green colors and they all had new tags! They sold so fast I was amazed they FLEW out of my store – I think I had them listed at $39.95 each… I don’t think there is anything too vintage about them – It appeared that they came from TJ Max and there are plenty online (used) for much lower prices – I think they are very popular and if you have the right size then somebody will come along and buy them.
08/15/2018 at 3:58 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 373: Should Running A Business Be Complicated? #47538Hi Mike,
I don’t have any “automatic refunds” reasons checked. I only have “automatic approval” selected so for any and all reasons the buyer will be given a label and must send the item back first and then I will (manually) determine the refund. (We get to choose the amount refunded because of free returns, but I have always chosen 100% – I like having the option to do less in case there is ever an issue – ie: something is returned damaged but I have never had to do that.) This preference has not affected TRSP. -
