Thanks, Craig! I will definitely look into Gixen! Even as I was bidding (before the end) I knew I was driving up the price, but I just put in my max bids and stepped away. I won many 🙂 but lost a few. Shipping is what is going to kill me here… but now I have inventory to list for a few days without having to leave home and get to try out some new brands that I just can’t find here locally. I thought it will be fun to snipe at least one day of inventory a week and see how it all works out. I appreciate your shared advice.
Keeping up with posting the numbers…. 2 weeks ago was busy and sales came in at a good pace. Last week, all low dollar sales and 2 higher dollar returns made for a pretty crappy week. This past weekend I tried some online sniping on eBay and spent way too much money… time will tell if I can make a good ROI. I did my research first, so feeling optimistic. It’s not my normal method of sourcing, but I like to try new ones.
Jay, happy to hear the first week went well! It looks like so much fun. Retro, Congrats on the “Big News” that is so cool! Craig, you had an amazing week… good job! Christine, I’m also too shy for what not, but am very intrigued with the idea… would love to be able to do that with my old inventory. Sharyn, I enjoy hearing about all your new sales venues.

This is an interesting conversation… pondering the journey of “selling clothes”… Since Q2 of last year I decided to stop buying hard goods and just stick to clothing in efforts to niche down and hopefully improve my processes and make more $. Ebay sure has changed over the past 10 years. Sometimes I miss looking for the rare vintage hard goods, but the rare gems can be found in the clothing category as well, so it doesn’t get boring for me. Packing is so much easier. Sourcing is fast and quick and continually improving as my knowledge of name brands (what to buy and what to avoid) grows. The competition amongst other resellers is fierce and the thrifts are charging more than ever, but there are always the loopholes and places to seek for cheap (or free) items if you are determined. If you are having a terrible sales day, you need to ask yourself if you have consistently listed anything within the last 24 hours. The best way to drive sales is to list. The 2nd way is to up your promoted listings to the “dynamic rate” and your impressions/traffic will most likely double and you will start hearing the cha-ching soon after. I know nobody wants to pay these high rates, but there is no denying (for clothing at least) that it works. As far as offers to watchers, I like Craig’s advice to offer at least 25% and will try doing more of that this week. I tend to offer minimal off ($2-$5 etc.) but keep counter offers on to get the deal going. If they are interested, they usually counter back. I generally try to list 5 a day minimum but have been slacking these past few weeks and my sales are down in proportion to the decrease. I would love to grow to 10 day, but I probably need to wait until my son starts pre-school so I have more listing time during the day. Tonight I am listing a ton of items (more than normal) and I have had the best sales day I’ve had in over a month (or two). On days I can’t list I will use the sell similar oldest listings and tweak pricing to at least have some activity. It’s not as great as it used to be, but much better than doing nothing and does help drive sales. I am struggling to create a “draft bank” – I get a few going but then usually use them up a day or two later, but I need to find the discipline to build and grow one because I know daily listing consistently is the key to predictable daily sales. These days it feels like 5 a day is as much as I can do.

Jay, my thoughts exactly… a few hours a week, I can handle it, but I just wouldn’t make a good pre-school teacher or day care worker 🙂 I don’t know how they do it! And the pay is not enough (definitely harder than any higher paying corporate job I’ve had in the past).
Sharyn – glad you are feeling OK, hope all the Covid is now behind you.
This was a bit of a slow week for me. I got a part time job at our church watching the kids during group meetings. I get to take my little kids with me to “work” for a couple of hours in the morning, and I’ll do this 2x a week. But boy, it is quite hard work watching and entertaining a room full of little kids,,, Listing on eBay in peace and quiet is much more fun but this was a nice opportunity to get paid while spending time with my own kids, which I would normally be doing at home anyway. My youngest will be going to pre-school in a few months and I’m looking forward to the block of uninterrupted time I will get to focus more on both sourcing and listing.

Congratulations, Retro on your accomplishments! Next year I hope you make it your goal to exceed $100k, because I know you will make it. I actually did also have my best ebay year as well, haha, I exceeded $20k in sales for the first time… and I only started really working my languishing store after September. I am excited for 2024. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keeping us all motivated to crush it.

Merry Christmas everybody! Christine, great numbers…. you are doing very well. I had no seasonal items listed this year so no huge jump either :), but I have been pretty steady this season, and making sure to list every day. Sharyn, I hate when that happens… but was also excited to also see that that ebay fixed that “bug” that resets the sell similar quantity!

Just trying to make it through Christmas. I probably won’t be able to list consistently like I have been doing in weeks past until the New Year, but doing what little I can. There is a brand-new consignment shop that opened up down the street that is EMPTY and buying clothes. It’s a perfect excuse to comb through my inventory and sell off some of the cheaper and older goods as well as do a full inventory cleanup and consolidate my bins for next year. I already found a few things that have mysteriously unlisted… also things I intentionally unlisted and never pulled. I’m continuing to slowly get rid of lower priced and older items (that have zero views even after tweaking prices and titles and have been sitting for a few years). Happy to sell these items for a few bucks in cash and clear them out of my store. It does take a lot of time though, but that will be my main focus this upcoming week. Hope you all have a great week!
Christine, perhaps this slows me down, but I search solds and price at the highest end and then take and send offers. Even though my stuff has high prices, it still sells 🙂 Maybe I will try a lower pricing model someday but for now, this is working fine… I think you do the same if I recall… 🙂
Well, I officially slacked this week, so much going on personally… I just didn’t have time to list and honestly didn’t make it my #1 priority. It felt good to take a few days off. I’ll be back on track next week. Always great to see the numbers and read your stories. For me, Promoted Listings are important and I seem to have the best combo when I run a low $ sale and a low $ coupon. (5%)… in addition to the PL’s. But I like to change things up and with super desirable items I tend to exclude them from the discounts and those items still sell without the help. I have been tracking the STR for each item I list. It’s helping me to source better items. And, yeah, after a return, I feel like there is a sales slow-down for 24 hours, but no way to officially prove it, as the traffic stays the same, but I wonder if items get temporarily placed lower in search, possibly?
