Number of items listed this week: 2Mercari update: Sold one item, listed one of our clothing. Mercari sends a message about low view, stale (6 weeks old) listings asking if you still want to sell the item. Interesting…
On Ebay this week sold a lot of low dollar items and it felt even slower. Life outside Ebay unforgiving so I’m hoping it’s a better week on Ebay. I did manage to sneak out Saturday intending to shop at the tile stores, which were closed by then so I went late to two estate sales. Didn’t buy much but interesting. One was a clear the decks divorce sale at a gorgeous property with a city view. Amazing furniture at fair prices but the little stuff left was way overpriced. For example, they had one of these Dansk Teak Ice Bucket priced at $90 and not in great condition. Another “Moving Miss Daisy” (love that name!) run by some fun gay guys who obviously know their stuff and also price high. I’m going to have to learn the ropes later when I clear the death piles. I guess estate sales might also be about finding what other people are missing. And building relationships and finding the right companies or family run sales.
Have a great week.
Grady: hi, yes looking for the sold price – thanks almasty. I bought this item for $6.99 at GW without much thought. I bought another small piece not realizing it was a print on board. I actually sold that small one for about $45 or $50 I think on Ebay and the buyer was super happy. Grady, happy to hear your thoughts on value. I’ve put in on local Facebook groups already but probably will get a better price on Ebay.
08/21/2018 at 7:55 pm in reply to: Trash Elf Twins Challenge 2018 Thread #3 From Week 31 August #47828Thanks! I wish my YTD total listed was bigger. I think it’s probably a good time to list your afghans and linens. I don’t think I have any selling tips, but personally I’m only picking up going forward if a really cool pattern or color scheme I think.
08/20/2018 at 9:51 am in reply to: Trash Elf Twins Challenge 2018 Thread #3 From Week 31 August #47733Vintage Lacy you can really handle quantity! Hope everyone is having a relatively calm week outside Ebay. I listed 20 items, 7 from death piles. Sat down 5 times to list this week.
I did some very focused RA summer clearance and hit one grand reopening sale at my favorite thrift for vintage items – that was fun but backpedaled a bit.
Kids go back to school this week and I love Fall. It’s making me feel some urgency to list. The pile categories I’ll be working are cookie cutters, Christmas, and tablecloths. I can’t bring myself to say flatware or vintage fabric but makes sense to tackle those this time of year. Have a great listing week!
Total Items in Ebay Store: 456
Items Sold: 12
Cost of Items Sold: $375
Total Sales: $892
Highest Price Sold: $322 (3 piece bedding set, paid $199 on sale Set )
Average Price Sold: $74
Returns: 0, but one loss of $28 buyer claimed new item sent with bottom chip and I replaced no charge.
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $478 (Loaded up on more clearance bedding sold above, plus one thrift reopening sale of vintage items)
Number of items listed this week: 20Mercari update: cross posted 3 kids book lots, sold a death pile Disney mug overnight and my daughter’s jacket for $40 profit. Word on Facebook is stale listings don’t move on Mercari and they pump up new seller’s listings. So strong start, and then eases off.
Also sold made $30 on Facebook selling less desirable vintage Pyrex lots that I didn’t feel like shipping.
Nice sales on Ebay and a couple of customer service issues, which I almost never get. I had my first truly nutty and mildly abusive buyer. But, moving on. I don’t have many problems so I’m ok just throwing small $ at something to make it go away. Hopefully I’ll escape without any negative feedback and keep my 100%.
Glad you enjoyed your trip to NYC and are excited about your new project. My kitchen contractor is great and I told him I admire him for calmly solving any issues that crop up. He said that’s what the job is – pretty much solving problems. So kudos for you for being able to deal! That’s not for me. Great prices at West Elm. You had good timing for RA brick and mortar picking though I feel like the summer sales aren’t quite as generous as they used to be a year or two ago. All the same, it feels SO good to get nice quality at Walmart prices. Have a great week!
I like that advice Sharon. Here’s what I did. Buyer C hadn’t paid yet. I took the out of stock hit which I could afford and apologized and sent a brief explanation. They accepted the cancellation right away, no comment. I apologized and offered Buyer B 50% a similar item in my store. If they ever respond, I’ll also offer to buy the same item from another seller or refund them the difference if they do.
Buyer A I figured is most likely to follow through and leave bad feedback. So, I fulfilled the order for them. If they still leave bad feedback, I will for sure fight it. If they complain about the item (expecting that), I’m just going to refund and let them have it – totally not worth it. What a cluster!
Ebay let buyer A pay again with the original item number even though it was relisted (Ebay’s fault). She had it in her cart before I blocked her. Buyer A threatening to complain to Ebay. Ebay rep said refund in Paypal and she can’t leave negative. Not sure I believe her.
I would and have donated unsold Heartstone pottery before. There are currently a few for 10 or 15 dollars with free shipping. I don’t have a problem with breakables though and that wouldn’t factor in much if I already owned it. Fun to see what people say on this issue of pricing I’ve been thinking about. Incidentally, I’ve not done very well with single sugar, creamer, or honey servers generally speaking even if it’s a recognizable name.
Workspaces / internet area are cropping up downtown here with wine and coffee bars inside but not sure if you have the right age group to support that.
Have fun with it! I’m confident you’ll make a good choice.08/13/2018 at 4:20 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 373: Should Running A Business Be Complicated? #47413True. I feel like during later decades we will all go back and think about what stuff of little value we – adults and kids – were scrolling vs. spending time with family or friends and cringe. In my house at least we don’t have phones at the table.
08/13/2018 at 11:45 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 373: Should Running A Business Be Complicated? #47357It was fun and humorous and generated good talking points, especially if you have a teen girl. Super sad the part where the dad is trying to talk to her and she’d rather be scrolling her feed…
08/13/2018 at 11:35 am in reply to: Trash Elf Twins Challenge 2018 Thread #3 From Week 31 August #47354Listed 20 items, 8 items from DP. Few items pick up this week and listed first. I sat down to list 4 times, so happy with that. I also cross posted a few items on Mercari (so quick!) and did sell similar to anything with a 16 month banner. I had about 12 of those. Good luck to all with non-Ebay chaos this week!

A slower week than the last two for me. Happy the Fall update was mellow.
Did an estate sale around the corner all rookie wrong this week. Arrived 10 minutes early Sat. No dealers in line. House fairly full but all 70s brown not 50s and 60s. All the value totally picked already – no perfumes, huge full sewing room with no machines or kits, no desirable kitchen stuff. Come to find out it started on Friday AND the company sells consignment on Ebay. But, good since I have the death piles.
Enjoyed the talk and forum postings about pricing. I think there is an art to pricing items that fall along the availability spectrum between the totally unique hand carved nut bowl and the iphone case. This is where I’m rethinking my tendency to price high. For example, I was pricing vintage Pyrex bowls lately. There are say, 10 of the exact same bowl sold separately in basically the same condition. Interestingly, the lowest priced ones were not sold first. I priced mine on the high side but not at the top, pinned it, and it sold right away even though there were lower priced ones available. That’s why I was surveying the elves to see where people price in comparison to the highest solds. In the past, I’ve been going over the high solds and running 10-20% off sales. But, I’m thinking about going more like 85% of solds for items like this so I can get more velocity and clear my piles.
Have a great week. Enjoy your City time R&J. I saw the Eighth Grade movie you mentioned last week with my teen. It was well done.
Congrats and enjoy your time with that little one. The old cliche about it going by fast is true. It’s hard work physically but the wonder and imagination of little ones is amazing. I wish I had discovered Ebay when my kids were little. Helps stimulate the adult brain but is a solitary and flexible activity.
08/06/2018 at 1:21 pm in reply to: Trash Elf Twins Challenge 2018 Thread #3 From Week 31 August #46936One more thought. I still allow myself a little bit of picking during this process after having taken a big break in 2017 with the other challenge. Now when I’m evaluating an item, I take a minute ask myself “do I really want to get involved with this thing?” I think about how it will be in my space, packing and shipping it, and all of my backlog waiting for me. Not too many vintage items are making the cut, which is good.
