I had two opportunities to scavenge in person this weekend, a favorite library sale and the Philly area card show, and the card show ended about a half-hour ago so I can officially say that I went to neither. Stuck with the spring cleaning plan. Pretty happy about having that level of discipline.
So my scavenge of the week is turning into, What weird stuff did I buy from mega card consignment sellers this week thread. It turns out…that’s kind of an interesting question to answer each week!
The big score (literally), this signed Ballet in the Dirt hardcover book for $30. Shipping looks brutal but this seller combines shipping at essentially arbitrary rates, and this week I got lucky. They only charged me $25 shipping for my entire order. Terapeak comps in the $200 range. Bad title, missing all the good stuff about the item. I’m lucky they took a bunch of pictures. But I also buy from this seller enough that I know to look for items like this. Better to be good than lucky.
A 14 card lot of early 20th century military uniform tobacco cards for about $25, or $1.75 each. Perfect to send in on consignment, which will bring my COGS up to $2.25 each. A bargain price since COMC will also identify the appropriate set for me. The listing is probably correct, but I’m having trouble finding terapeak comps. I am always learning when it comes to vintage sports and non-sports cards. There are plenty of really valuable vintage cards and others which are only worth a buck or two — this is true of cards from almost every year from early 1900s to present. And condition is so important. But these cards look pretty nice for their age. Some of the corners are a little soft, but bright colors and no creases. These might do well in an auction or live auction too. I’ll circle back to this set in sale of the week at some point in the future and we’ll see how I did.
A couple certified autographed oddball items — this Rex Walters signed Miami Heat towel for just $3 and a Lenny Dykstra signed 1985 Mets Fan Appreciation book for $8. These are probably better for eBay than selling on consignment (not even sure the consignor would take them), but I slack on listing low COGS/low upside items like this. Too much of a bargain to pass up, not interesting enough to actually list. But that’s what spring cleaning is for.
In the sports card world, I bought just one big card last week and it was this Cup RPA of Vegas Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill for $55. The Cup is the premier hockey set and an RPA, rookie patch autograph, is the most desirable type of ultra modern card for most players. This was the lowest sale of this card in the last year because the Knights and Hill have been playing poorly over the last month. But they won the Stanley Cup last year, and Hill was a big reason why. I’m not a hockey expert by any stretch (I could only name 2 or 3 players on most days) but I have been trying to learn more. Hopefully it will pay off with this sale. I’d love to sell the card for $200 sometime in the next month or two.
What did you find this week?

Good for you @Craig skipping sales and digging in.
My favorite find this week was at a local vintage pop up sale. This guy makes awesome wood and salvage projects https://www.ericsvintagewoods.net/things-i-j-u-s-t-finished I bought this from him for $35, which I’m flipping https://www.ebay.com/itm/235468273665 Since I love it I put a high price on it. I’m always looking for these since I’m coastal but never seem to find any.

Thanks Christine. It is fun to get out there and look for stuff, probably more fun than anything else reselling related, so it felt good to stay disciplined and I built some decent momentum on my spring cleaning project. Have been winning a few more auctions than normal this week so I’m glad I didn’t get too spendy last weekend.
That pulley is really well made and seeing the listing made me realize, wow, I wouldn’t know where to begin with pricing something like that. I hope you get full price for it. Are those kinds of items really long-tail?

Hi Craig. So I had a strong reaction to the pulley because of the paint. I didn’t find another quite like it in solds, but used Terapeak to set a price based on the highest brown pulleys sold. I feel like if I have a strong reaction, someone else will love it as much as I do. I also don’t mind keeping certain cool items around to put in my featured item bar in my Ebay store.
