I took a few days “off” eBay at the beginning of last week to do some further planning and organization for my big spring cleaning, then life got in the way at the end of the week. I didn’t create a new listing until yesterday afternoon, a 9 day gap which may be my longest since I started reselling full-time 2.5 years ago. I didn’t use the end and sell similar trick either. With a 175 item store, I’m not sure I would try end and sell similar ahead of sending aggressive offers or repricing or listing better stuff. Of course, I didn’t do any of those things either.
Now that I’m really analyzing my last week, and my own behavior, it is a small miracle that I sold anything. Of course, because eBay can be strange, I had a busy week with consistent sales. 36 items to 27 buyers for just over $1600 gross/$1100 net, slightly up from last year even though my store is much smaller. Go figure. The lesson of the week: do nothing you’re supposed to and don’t even think about listing. Not every week, that’s reselling suicide. But maybe one week out of the year?
Some of these sales were because of my specialty, sports cards. I sold four Terrence Shannon Jr. autographed 1/1 encased proof cards at $50 a pop (three to the same buyer) as he led his Illinois team to two victories in March Madness. I sold seven Naz Reid autographed Panini Prizm draft cards to the same repeat buyer at about $20 each. He has probably bought ten cards from me, almost all Reid and most of the different color parallels from this Prizm set. Collect them all, which is basically impossible with how some are limited to 1/1 or #/5, and you have what collectors call a rainbow. This is why I stock up on individual players when the opportunity presents itself, but usually I sell one at a time for a nice profit. It’s rare to sell seven anything to the same buyer on eBay in 2024, but this week was my turn for that. Couldn’t have happened at a better time.
I sold a few longtail items this week too. This Al Capone art card was given out at the 2022 National card show and I paid $26 for it in July of last year. There was just one other listing for $100 and a decent history of sales in the $100 range. Unfortunately someone flooded the market in August with $5 auctions, something I missed until now because I was traveling back from Chicago at that time. With that in mind, no wonder my copy has had no bites at the apple. Sometimes demand dries up for an item. I finally got an offer for the card last week after about four rounds of auctions, repricing and lowering my offer settings and even though it was just $30, I’m happy to move this one and go on to something else.
It’s been almost 18 months since I bought a listing with the incredible title of “Jimmy Carter inauguration” but I have finally made my money back with this $12 sale so anything I make from the remaining three listings of random presidential inauguration tickets will be pure profit. Not the type of item I normally sell, or care about, but it was a cheap way to learn a little bit and make a buck or two.
I did a little better on this authenticated signature of Maude Adams, an early 20th century actress who played Peter Pan. I purchased the auto for about $25 on March 16 last year and it sold on March 19 this year for $75. Not sure where my buyer was for the last year, and I’m not sure I’d pay quite this much for an item with such a scant selling history, but it worked out this time.
What did you sell this week?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/335198013632 It was not a thrilling week for sales by any means, but I’ll point out that I have sold I think all of my Denby china pick ups. In the meantime, I have not done well with Dansk and had to redonate several items. Now I totally pass on Dansk unless it’s wood.
