I’m not an expert but I would say if the pieces are irregular and tied together haphazardly it’s a pretty good indication it’s vintage. Truthfully, I’ve never saw a string/twine ball that was mass produced, so I am assuming they are all pretty much vintage.
As far as pricing, I would list them individually and maybe one or two at a time so as not to flood the market. The one that sold the highest in the past month started out at 12.95 on auction, but sold for much more. Auctions are a risk but sometimes yield the highest profit. That being said, I rarely do an auction!
I would also consider putting 2 or 3 of different sizes together in a lot. When I research and price any item, I look at sold prices, set my BIN price accordingly and check the Best Offer box.
Hope that helps!

You lucky duck! I collect old balls of string…this was a great find. I’ve collected mine over the years from auction box lots. They rarely come up on ebay and do sell really well. The size you have sell better than the really large ones. Newspaper boys received their paper bundles tied with string, the butcher tied up your meat package with string, etc.
During the depression people saved everything. Women would save their string and when they had enough crochet it into dishcloths. A true Scavenger!!!
Google giant ball of string…several museum have huge ones! The color and texture is perfect to add to a farmhouse vingette or prim decor. Good luck!
interesting Mark! Thanks for linking to the article. So it seems we can sell a store with ebay’s written permission. Good to know. Now, I’ll have to find something else to ponder the next time I can’t sleep:)
I’ve always wondered if there is a way to sell your store along with your ebay id…transferring it to another person. I know I heard a youtuber say they sold their etsy store.
Could you and the buyer open a joint checking account with debit card and assign it to your ebay account. Sell a few things using the joint account. Change the address on your ebay account and then remove yourself from the equation? I really have no idea…it was one of those late night, I can’t sleep and my mind won’t stop working thoughts:)

Recently I’ve starting working through them, listing what I feel like and donating back to thrift store what I don’t. I know I’m loosing money on the items BUT I’m not loosing my mind over seeing them sit stagnant. I’ve also given myself permission to leave an item at the thrift store that I know will sell but don’t enjoy listing. I’m retired. I love my eBay business and I’m still learning how to let go of things that don’t bring me joy.
OH MY! Thanks for sharing this info. I had no idea what it was:) Jay, I just tried it and it does save the measurements on the photo. A bit of trial and error to figure it out.

My daughter and I used to go to the one on the west side a few times a year. Here was my experience:)
1. we never remembered gloves but they would have been nice:)
2. about the time we were done going through one set of bins they were bringing more out.
3. if we found a lot of items we would check out and start over, but mostly we just kept filling our same cart.
4. pop machine inside and clean restrooms
5. Find something to cover your cart up with and leave it along the wall if you like. It’s hard to maneuver the cart and dig fast when the new bins come out. We never had a problem with someone taking our items or cart
6. getting there when they open is good, there are always bins already on the floor to dig through. They rotate sections of bins all day long. I’ve found good stuff in old bins that others have looked through.
7. Good luck with getting to all 4 in one day. We never made it to more than one!
8. Take some food for energy…it’s exhausting:)My daughter has since moved to Georgia and no Goodwill Outlets in Georgia! We miss the outlets:) Have fun.
What a great idea! Going to try using your message next time!
Count me in for wanting to read it all! I feel like I’m missing key comments. I have subscribed to everything I can and checked the box, but unless I comment on each individual post under the forum and click the box, I miss follow up comments. In the old format, (if you commented once on the main post and clicked the box), I could get all the comments from the week’s post sent to my inbox. Thanks for all you do…and trust me when I say I’m not complaining…just want to keep up with all my fellow scavengers are sharing.

@ blessed and happy! WOW…what an amazing sale on the calculator!!! Those are the kind of sales that keep the ebay adrenaline pumping:)
@ Sharyn … so happy your October sales were the best for you! I love when my fellow sellers have great months…makes me realize we all get our turn and there is plenty of buyers out there.

12/01/2016 at 9:54 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Inaugural invite, trigger finger mittens, back saw, expanding file #6979Okay, going to post some of our dismal sales from the week. Do any other sellers find that 4th quarter is one of their lowest of the year in sales instead of the highest? Consistently over the past few years, we have the best sales 2nd and 3rd quarter, with 1st quarter coming in next.
This sale cracked me up…when I found this rubber maid brush in the bottom of an auction box, I started to toss it in the “return to the thrift store” box. Decided I should check completed auctions first. It sold yesterday for 22.49 after being listed for a few months.

Usually these go in the thrift store box too. A quick check of completed sales identified this as a Partylite votive. Sold for full price of 28.99 after being listed for a few months.

Find these pretty often at the thrift stores for a couple of bucks. They can sit for awhile before selling though. This one sold for 40.49

A friend clued me in to how well shells can sell on ebay. Before that, I would send them back to the thrift store when I found them in auction boxes. Had never heard of a conch horn until I researched the first one. This one sold for 26.60 and I believe I found it at a thrift store for a couple of bucks.
