Any scavengers in Indiana? I would love to meet up and learn more and more. I’m sure scavenging is the same everywhere but the things available to scavenge might differ.

Hi! I live in Indianapolis and would like to meet up with fellow scavengers. I do ebay full time and don’t have a “normal” job so I am flexible on when and where to meet.

Hello Pam, nice to meet you. I do have a JOB however, I only work 3 days a week and it’s Saturday Sunday and Monday so I’m available most weekdays. I like to hit the goodwills on Wednesday mostly. We could meet at one of the goodwill or another place to scavenge in the area. I have only been to the goodwills on the north side of Indy and the Outlet downtown. I’d like to learn some things from you for sure. Do you know of many other scavengers in our area?
-

I hit the Goodwills on Wednesday also…gotta love the 30% discount. When you talk about the north side of town, are you talking Fishers/Noblesville or Westfield/Carmel? I live on the SE side of Indianapolis but I can meet up on the north side. I try to go once a month. Tomorrow is too soon for me to meet but I can meet on January 4th. I see scavengers all the time at Goodwill, they are the ones that have their carts full of clothing or have their phone out but I don’t really know anyone. I think we are all afraid of the competetion. I’m not sure why, there is plenty of stuff to scavenge.

Yea Noblesville fishers Castelton area. I would like to go further south to see more stores. I like frequently visiting same stores but I’m really wanting to find some of those church ones out of the way of the main stream. January 4th sounds good to me. Just let me know which works best for you. And I’ll be there.
-

I don’t know of any church thrift stores, at least around my area. Have you been to St Vincent De Paul? It’s in the Noblesville are, 1391 Greenfield Ave. They are only open on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 10-2 and Saturday from 9-12. I have found some nice items there.
There are quite a few Goodwills on my side plus I also travel to Greenwood and Center Grove. It depends on how far you want to travel.
Do you want to meet for coffee first?
-
12/27/2016 at 8:46 pm #8939
Sure coffee sounds great. We can meet up somewhere and then figure out where we want to go. Just name the place and time.

Let’s meet at the McDonalds on Southport Rd/Emerson Ave. There are two Goodwills and a Goodwill Outlet on Emerson. Easiest for you would be to take 465 east to 65 south. Once on 65, take the Southport Rd exit. At the light, take a left. Go to the second light (Emerson Ave) and make a right. The McDonalds is on the corner. Address is 5030 Southport Crossing, Indianapolis. Can you make it at 9:30?
All SL trash elves are welcome! We are meeting on Jan 4th.

Thank you Pam for helping me so much. I wish more of us could meet up so we could sharpen our business together. Thank I think there are many who do sale on eBay but are scared of competition that we hide it. It’s a BIG WORLD!!

Hi Kevin. Thanks for meeting up. It was great to go to the thrift store with an another ebayer. I learned from you too. I’m going to start looking more at shoes and jeans. Hope you found a lot of treasures at the Outlet!

Hola Pam and Kevin , Sam here. Sounds like I am in the middle of you two in south broad ripple. I got full time job and eBay on the side. If you are wanting to do another meet up, Tuesdays and Thursdays morning fits me best.
-
01/28/2017 at 10:41 am #11342
Hi Sam…nice to meet you. I wouldn’t mind setting up another meet up but I am busy with listing for the next couple of weeks. I am listing consignment items for my sister and I’m putting my head down to get the majority of items listed.
I am flexible so Tuesdays or Thursdays are good for me. Maybe Feb 16th?
-
01/30/2017 at 4:54 pm #11424
Same, but we can try for Feb at half way spot.

Heard about this thread from listening to the vlog. I am interested in going to the GW Outlets in Indy area. Are you guys experienced with the Outlets in your city? I wonder how busy they are on a weekday? I see they have regular looking shopping carts, do you just load up, pay and take to your car and wait for the next round of bins? Would you suggest wearing gloves or is that just people online being sarcastic. Any further advice? Any location suggestions? There are 4 stores. I would assume the best strategy is to get there early (for me anyway since I’m from out of town). If I arrived right at 9am would I be waiting on them to get stuff around or can I dig in right away? Thanks for the help.

My daughter and I used to go to the one on the west side a few times a year. Here was my experience:)
1. we never remembered gloves but they would have been nice:)
2. about the time we were done going through one set of bins they were bringing more out.
3. if we found a lot of items we would check out and start over, but mostly we just kept filling our same cart.
4. pop machine inside and clean restrooms
5. Find something to cover your cart up with and leave it along the wall if you like. It’s hard to maneuver the cart and dig fast when the new bins come out. We never had a problem with someone taking our items or cart
6. getting there when they open is good, there are always bins already on the floor to dig through. They rotate sections of bins all day long. I’ve found good stuff in old bins that others have looked through.
7. Good luck with getting to all 4 in one day. We never made it to more than one!
8. Take some food for energy…it’s exhausting:)My daughter has since moved to Georgia and no Goodwill Outlets in Georgia! We miss the outlets:) Have fun.

I’m here on the Northeast side of Indy. I’ve been at it part time for a couple of years while I stay at home with kids. Also dabbling with Amazon but needing to rethink it with recent changes. I am up for meeting to exchange ideas. I’m out of town next week, but my schedule is generally super flexible.

Tentative date for meet up is Feb 16th in the am. Any suggestions on time and place to meet? We probably need to meet up closer on the north side of Indianapolis since most of us are closer to the north side. I’m flexible.

02/03/2017 at 9:14 pm #11725
Whatsup guys! This is Grant, Indy here as well, I’d be up for meeting as well Feb. 16th. Looks like we’ve got a lot of us popping up here. Just went full-time on eBay after building up for a year and of course taking huge inspiration from the Scavenger Life podcasts. I’m a solo mission seller so it’d be interesting to hear other’s approaches to this as I don’t know anyone who does what I do. North side is good. Good luck out there everyone. Half off tomorrow!

I live in Northern Indiana but would love to meet up on Feb 16th. I own a small cleaning business and run that part time and do Ebay part time. I have only thrifted at the Carmel Goodwill for personal items a few years ago. I am interested to see if the finds are more profitable in a bigger city. I currently have approximately 850 items in my store and make $500-$700 per week. I average about 2 hours per days between thrifting, listing, and shipping. My goal is to go full time Ebay by July 1st this year.

I am available the 16th. Northside is great or I am willing to meet up most anywhere.
-
02/07/2017 at 11:54 am #11965
Thurs Feb 16th sounds good. I can wake up early and be there whenever works best. Since I am not familiar with the scavenging in Indy someone else should handle the details of the meet up. Looking forward to it, thanks!

This is awesome…I’m excited to meet everyone!
So, we are meeting on Feb 16th which is next week. Let’s meet at 10 am so we don’t have to drive in rush hour traffic. I thought we could meet at Panera Bread in Noblesville on hwy 37. There are several Goodwills, a Salvation Army, and St Vincent de Paul relatively close by. The address is 17177 Mercantile Blvd, Noblesville. Panera is located in a strip center and faces hwy 37.
Is this ok with everyone?

02/07/2017 at 8:59 pm #12012
Cool that sounds good, I’ll be there. That’s a good area for sourcing too. If we all just wrap ourselves in eBay tape we’ll know who to look for haha. Heads up, I went to the St Vincent de Paul store a week ago and it was closed for renovation, maybe it’s open again? They have great prices.

How did this mini reseller convention go today? I couldn’t make it, I listed all of my items instead in preparation for sales day in Fort Wayne on Friday and then the same in Michiana on Saturday.
If you could live anywhere in Indy to most effectively run your reselling business, where would it be? I’m planning on moving there and just figuring out what neighborhoods are good and what the best thrift stores are (I know kind of like asking which is the best slot machine). I managed to check out all three of the GW Outlets but haven’t gone down to the one south of 465 (Greenwood I believe). I’m trying to make the most of a balance between good neighborhood and close proximity to where I will source most often (plan to source daily). Budget is around $1000 including parking and extras.

The Indy meetup today went great. There were 4 of us, Pam, Bidders Basement, MlsIndy and myself. I only scavenged at two places while there and bought very little. I did not see the high quality Vintage or the amount of good brand clothing that we find here in Northern Indiana. However, I did shop very quickly, so I am sure I did not give it a fair chance. Sorry to hear you’re heading down south but I am sure you will love it. Lots of fun things to do in a bigger town. I follow a few Ebay stores in Bloomington and Evansville and they are doing really well so I know there is stuff to be found. Good luck and best wishes.

It was nice meetup today….it’s great to connect with fellow trash elves. Thanks Grace, Michelle, and Grant for coming. I will set another meetup in the next few months.
Fred, if you’re planning on moving to Indianapolis, I would suggest that you live somewhere close to 465. It’s so easy to jump on and go anywhere to thrift. I live on the SE side of town because it was less expensive to buy a house than other areas and easier to jump on 465 and 69. Once you’re on the highway, it easy to get around. Basically you can circle Indianapolis in about 45 minutes on 465 (except during morning and evening rush hours). Good luck! If you need any help, let me know. I have lived here about 15 years and know the city pretty well.
What’s sales day in Fort Wayne?
-
02/18/2017 at 7:53 pm #12840
Thanks for your advice! I’m looking up so many different apartments on Trulia etc. I didn’t realize that you could circle 465 in 45min, that’s a good idea to live close to there. I like the idea of living in the city and having an apartment with a view. But, I think I should rent something short term and cheaper to really test the waters before jumping in to a high-rise or something on the canal (and get my employee setup and running comfortably).
-
03/07/2017 at 12:46 pm #14006
The canal is up and coming. You might try Irvington and Garfield Park if you looking cheap house in areas that artists are moving to. Usually this means you can take 80k house turn it into 200-300k in 10 years. Plus, still close 465 and a lot of thrift stores.

Hey Fred, I’ve got a friend here in California that’s been buying houses in Indiana for a song. he pays like 30,000 to 45,000 each and has been renting them out. I would love to be able to get a house for that much.
He’s been buying them up in Lafayette, which I know is a distance away.
When I was a Trucker, I had a regular customer in Indiananpolis. It’s cool city. What is St.Louis like for picking.. or even Chicago. You’ve got a lot of options there.

Might be doing some extensive scavaging near downtown Indy next Thursday if anyone wants to meet up.

What scavenging is good in downtown Indy?
-
-
03/11/2017 at 5:38 pm #14262
Some church thrift stores and a massive Salvation Army. Some good stores over in Irvington and Fountain Square.
-
03/22/2017 at 9:10 pm #15108
Do they put staples in their clothing items at that Salvation? What are their prices like?
-
07/18/2017 at 7:49 pm #20476
Hello, I missed the big meetup y’all had but I’d love to get together again soon. But maybe if someone knows of a town or good neighborhood rummage sale coming up we could all crash it. I’d love to chat with you guys to grow in this business. I’m usually down in North Indy Geist, Fishers on most Fridays hitting garage sales. Let me know if you want to hook up sometime.

I work and live full time in Greencastle, but am often in Indy on the week-ends. I could possibly come out during the week some time if planned in advance. I’ll try my best to join in. Thanks
