Hi all, I have been hitting the garage sales on Friday mornings, now that they are open again. I have had some good luck including this complete lego set I picked up new in the box with seven other used open sets for $25. I found six of these Nissan Titan bed cleats for $10. The owner said his truck had been stolen right out of his garage, so he had no use for the cleats. My sales last week were pretty slow (as was my progress DIYing the bathroom update which is distracting me from hiking and eBay). The only really noteworthy sale was this 1961 Jack Poker Playing card set https://www.ebay.com/itm/193164866399 I bought it for $2.00 and sold for $78.50 (shipping included). This fell under the rule of thumb of buying anything new in the box from that past AND the rule of thumb of buying any kind of adult card games.
On bulky or heavy items, I usually select FedEx Home as a shipping option then at the point of making a label, I check for the most affordable option. I think USPS priority is an upgrade from FedEx home, so I don’t have an issue with switching to that. If the item is super expensive (>$200), I will select USPS priority anyway because of horror stories of others’ experience with FedEx claims. My $0.02.

Steve, thanks for the continued posts about your solds. I chuckled at your Estes Park hat – I pass on so many Colorado themed hats just because I see them all the time in our thrift stores. I’m glad for your reminder that what is common locally is not common in other parts of the country.

@Jay, I do think Facebook Marketplace will make a move on all the p2p selling – Etsy, Mercari, eBay etc. Among them all, Facebook has a HUGE advantage – (1) social network already built-in, (2) platform that people LIVE on that has routine advertising (3) AI that can match buyers to items they want & sellers that are trusted (4) deep pockets & programming prowess to defeat any technical or social barrier to success. I would not be shocked if Facebook Marketplace is the premier online peer-to-peer seller in next 5 – 10 years. Will depend on whether FB leadership decides that this is worth pursuing. I have been spending all my time & money on a DIY bathroom remodel, so I have not been very active in eBay and have been accepting almost any offer that comes my way. One of the big local thrift stores reopened and I half-filled my van with toys and puzzles that happened to have the color price tag for 50% off that day. I saw a fit 40ish yo guy filling a basket with newish looking short sleeve shirts and shorts. I thought perhaps it was @T-Satt, so I asked him if his name was Troy – it wasn’t. Anyway, I am 99% preoccupied with tiling, drywall repair and cabinet building & no light at the end of the tunnel yet. I really need to go to travel soon – was looking through photos of Beijing and Japan yesterday.
@trunkfullofjunk, I am wishing you a speedy recovery from all your health problems. Not knowing what is causing symptoms is maddening. When I am well, I seldom think of my health as an asset in much more than an abstract glancing kind of way. When I am not well, or in other moments of clarity, I would put a very high dollar value on my current level of well being and I am so grateful for it. Of course, second to my health and my family’s health is our safety and peace of mind. Our emergency fund is a strong element in keeping equilibrium in unsettled times. Best wishes to you, Daniel.
I usually lot several puzzles together and figure out what box I will use for shipping. Then I just list the actual shipping dimensions and use calculated cost. I usually select FedEx SmartPost and then on the day I am shipping look for the cheapest route – sometimes its FedEx ground or USPS Priority – I switch between them all without concern if I listed as FedEx SmartPost.
Last week I sold all my non-collectible puzzles on Facebook Marketplace and made the same $s I would make with eBay sales. My buyers are all local and did porch pick up so we all stay safe.
This is the weirdest use of this forum I have yet encountered. I wish I was close to you. I would be all too happy to help you out.

I got a box of these vintage USPS numbered keys at a garage sale for $5. The owner insisted that I take them – she said her husband used to sell them on eBay and made lots of money with them. I tried listing a few of them singly just to see if they got views. They were dead. A few weeks ago, I found a listing where they were sold in a lot with all the numbers printed in the listing. I cannot remember where I learned that vintage catalogs are desirable, but right before Colorado closed down, I grabbed a box full of manuals, hang tags and catalogs collected from the 1980s. This 1983 Marmot catalog (and another Marmot sleeping bag catalog) sold in less than 24 hours. After running low on inventory, I grabbed some stuff around the house including this huge & heavy stoneware bowl. https://www.ebay.com/itm/193385409631 I double boxed it and put it in a double heavy cardboard box. Buyer paid shipping almost as much as the cost of the bowl.
I started selling on FB Marketplace for the first time and unloaded some really heavy bulky stuff – a double sleeping bag, 20 lbs of Lego, a dog crate,a bicycle trainer and a bunch of puzzles. I just listed more puzzles (increase my price a little since there are no more puzzles for sale in my town) and am going to go looking for more stuff to list.

Hey @Jay. Sorry – busy day. I bought all of it to resell on eBay with the exception of the dog crate. I sold it all for eBay prices and gave the shipping savings to the buyers.
As I mentioned before, I have bought lots of puzzles in the past because I enjoy working them. It is also how I confirm that they are complete.
On interview with The Daily (podcast from NYT) yesterday, Dr Fauci (Director of US National Inst. Infectious Disease) indicated that the US will open up after things cool off and we will monitor and isolate new outbreaks without having to close down again. Gave me hope we are weeks to maybe two months away.
Westworld on HBO. I am watching season 3 as it comes out. I am also rewatching Season 1 with my daughter (after rewatching Seasons 1 & 2 with my wife). Season three reminds me of a show that died an untimely death after only one season: Caprica, a BSG spin-off that promised to be as good or better than its parent. I love robots vs humans singularity type SF.
I look forward to trying Dark because I love time travel and weird Germans.
