Nevermind – looks like there are 1000s of Coach purses on eBay and the vintage ones do not appear to have much value. I guess I dodged a buying error.
@Jay – thanks for the encouragement. I have already discovered that I hate china and glassware. It is a pain to store and a pain to ship. I still have about 30 pieces of early american pressed glass that I picked up for $0.50 a piece (estate seller thought it was just normal kitchen/ barware). I sold the most valuable goblet for $120 and the rest has not moved. I am going to find a way to move it – perhaps will look for a local buyer to take the lot.
@Sue – thanks also for the positive words. I am doing mixed bins on racks with letters to specify the rack and numbers to specify the bin. Because the bins are mixed, I think I should be able to find things quickly, but I may get into lots of t-shirts or other small stackables that would promote numbering the items inside the bin.Thanks so much for the support. Hi Nadine. Thanks for the introduction. Your back story is really fascinating. Sorry you had some painful steps on the way to scavenging for eBay. I was lucky enough to discover Jay and Ryanne through an interview with Jim Collins as my first step into this world. I had only a couple sales this past week. This is a corner vise – very useful to woodworkers and probably others as it allows position of a clamped item in horizontal or vertical position. I decided to photograph it clamped to a 2×4 so buyers could quickly understand how it works.

I would call this ‘naive’ or ‘primitive’. I do not think this is informed by any modern design movement. Rather the maker wanted to create a dog (or pig or whatever) and used her knowledge of said animal and knowledge of brass to create this.
The scroll work on the sides suggests to me that there is an antecedent, in perhaps in painted ceramic or wood that the artist could be copying. I guess you could also apply the term ‘folk art’. Best wishes, Daniel.

Past week, I built my light stands, cleaned up my work space, listed 15 items and sold 2. I am glad I took a few minutes to jot down some goals. Thanks for starting this thread.
This week, I invested in my store:
– purchased parts and assembled light stands to improve my photo studio
– bought a godaddy bookkeeping subscription
– started an inventory system for my storage that I hope will serve me well as I increase volume (retiring in July with more time to dedicate)After listening to the interview with Mark, I went ahead and purchased his eBooks and look started reading the finance book. You may consider subscription to GoDaddy Bookkeeping. The software will import your transaction history from eBay and Paypal (though I am not sure it will import from 2017? – anyone know). It will separate out expenses and make an estimate of taxes. You can then start accounting properly for 2018 (including use of the mobile app to capture mileage and on the fly expenses).

I have been a hobby eBay seller for the last 2 years and am taking early retirement starting in July. I have been building up a death pile as I go to estate sales and thrift stores in anticipation of having much more free time.
At the moment, I am working harder than ever at my job and I come home from work without much energy to list. Right now I have 114 items and I want to have 1000 items by the end of 2018. Today, I find that I need goals that address my present limited time/energy for listing. So here goes (don’t laugh):
(1) I want to list 14 items per week between now and end of June.
(2) This weekend, I will get a photographing ‘studio’ set up in my basement so that I have more control over light (natural light changes drastically in my present shooting room).
(3) By end of June, I will adopt accounting and inventory techniques that capture COGS and assure my store can be scaled 10x.Sorry – had a bit of a fail before trying to post a few items that sold, doing bad formatting [url] [/url] and then trying to undo bad formatting. Anyway, I am taking a second shot.
I have been selling on eBay since the start of 2016 and have always had just a little store (70 ish items), but am retiring this summer from my 9-5 and so working to grow my store. At present I have 112 items in my store and I am trying to list more everyday. My goal is to have 1000 items by September and get Top Rated status sooner. I have had a few wobbles along the way – canceled items, late shipping on a few last summer. All this has been opportunities to learn. J+R’s podcast and this forum have been valuable for accelerating the learning.

I found this jacket at a thrift store and was impressed with the embroidery and etc. so paid $5 for it. On return home, I discovered the inspiring Stephon Marbury story behind it and that the jacket would not bring big $$$s. When I first was getting started, I did not have a clear idea of what would sell and what was too much trouble (e.g too heavy to be valuable, too fragile etc.) I picked up this bottle of Pepsi from 1976 and stuck it in my store and there it has sat for the last 2 years.
I was just recently thinking I should take it down because it was never going to be valuable enought to anyone to cover shipping. Then it sold! There was a discussion on the forum about what other podcasts/youtube people follow and there was mention of another ebayer that has youtube videos. I watched one of his videos about what he bought at a flea market and it included one of these web belts. I was at an estate sale the same day and found this in the garage with old ropes and useless garbage.
I picked it up with about 2 pounds of osmocote (for my plants) for $1.50.

This spare windscreen was next to it and I (as well as the estate seller) thought it went with my helmet. Doing my research, I learned it was for a different helmet all together.
Listed it and have it packed up by the door to go out this morning.

I have a few things hindering me from growing my store at this point. First is time it takes to list. This I will overcome on July 1 when I retire, though I am planning a month-long road trip with my daughter. Next is the need to start capturing my eBay cash stream for accounting purposes. Finally, staying small has made it easy to find everything when it sells. I look forward to tackling these issues in the coming months and scaling up for the holiday buying season ahead.
