I do as well, but this one’s a commission. BOLO: Anything “brutalist” style sells for good money.

Carhartt J97 PTL Detroit Trucker Blanket Lined Jacket Stone Gray Large

I talked about this one in the scavenge of the week a few weeks ago. I took a best offer of $325. Definitly a BOLO item.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/234916962315 Vintage Ralph Lauren sheets are a bolo. The checker told me someone had bought the pillowcases 3 minutes earlier so I just missed having a complete set. :/ Don’t you hate that.

Actually disregard this request. It randomly popped into my head…brand is Fabrik. And while I’m here, this is definitely a BOLO. Check prices on vintage Fabrik stoneware.
11/11/2022 at 11:40 am #98337Happy Veterans Day to you, Steven, and all our fellow vets on the board.
This WWII son-in-service pin was a nice example, in sterling and maker marked, and it had two blue stars so it denotes two sons in service. (A gold star denotes KIA.) Yes, there were military women who served but the pins are known as “son-in-service” and many, like this one, specifically state that. It was in a $10 jewelry box full of random items at the flea market and sold for $15 plus shipping on a best offer.

The pins came in many different varieties, cheap metal to 14K gold, but the real BOLO is a six-star pin. Here’s an unmarked 6-star pin that does not say “son in service” that sold for $235 at auction recently. This ‘70’s Gemini disco mixer with cueing for two turntables was a $5 yard sale find. It needed a little cleaning up and though with limited features not among the more desirable of vintage mixers, sold quickly at $50 plus shipping on a best offer. The buyer told me he used to use this model as a DJ years ago. There is a different model Gemini mixer that was used by Grandmaster Flash back in the day that goes for a lot more.

Here’s a neat RPPC from 1930’s Shanghai, China, depicting the famous dragon boat races. It seems a bit unusual to me that I could get this much for a card with tourism subject matter but I’m not complaining. It was part of a large auction lot and sold for $20 plus Pirate Ship Special Export Rate shipping to China on a best offer (listed at $34.79).https://www.ebay.com/itm/275493941762
Jewelry is usually a dead letter for me. I’m not sure why I have so much trouble categorizing, titling, and describing jewelry and it usually sits and sits so I’m quite proud of this sale. It’s an Ann Hand Forget-Me-Not enamel pin that was commissioned for female veterans and given out at an event by a corporate sponsor. It sold for full price at $75 plus shipping.10/26/2022 at 5:45 pm #98174I actually have a few sales to talk about from last week since my numbers have started picking back up. These were all newly listed items.
This is a cool consignment challenge coin from US Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, Africa, in the shape of some kind of African gazelle skull and horns that sold for $45 plus shipping on a best offer. Navy figural challenge coins are BOLOS. The more elaborate, the better. They’re usually Chief Petty Officer coins like this one, which helps.

This complete pinstripe painting tool in its original box was in a bin of mostly junk at a yard sale. The seller wanted a firm $20 to take the whole bin. I suppressed a rude comment about him charging people to take out his trash and bought it. It was exasperating to pay that much but this tool in its original box sold for $70 plus shipping on a best offer after three days up and there are a couple more sellable items in the box.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/275504900636
Here was another great yard sale find last weekend that cost $1 and sold a couple days later. It’s a device that senses electric current in cables, etc., and comes with a small current generator. It was originally manufactured to trace POTS phone lines. Apparently, they sell like hotcakes, so surely they’re being used for other purposes these days. It’s a Progressive Electronics inductive amplifier with tracer and case and sold for $35 but with free shipping (cost me @ $4).

In the Navy, aides to very senior officers wear identifying shoulder cords on their service and dress uniforms that are called aiguillettes. The dress aiguillettes are fancy, with a knotted cord, multiple loops, and metal drops at the ends. The service aiguillettes (for the office uniforms) are simple gold and blue cord loops worn over the left shoulder going under the arm, with the number of cords corresponding to the rank of the aide’s boss. This consigned service aiguillette is for a full Admiral (four star = four cords) and sold for $50 plus shipping on a best offer to a China forwarder.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/275499808938
This is a head-scratcher if you run across it at the flea market unless you know what you’re looking at. It’s a reproduction shoulder stock / carrying case for the iconic Mauser C96 “Broomhandle” pistol originally in production from 1896 into the 1930s. The pistols were manufactured with a slot at the back of the frame to take a stock but few of the original stocks remain. Not all that many of the pistols remain, either, despite about a million being made. The reproduction stocks like this one have been made for years and are popular. I paid $10 for it at the flea market and it sold for $50 plus shipping on a best offer within a week of listing.

I didn’t really shop this week but my mother-in-law gave me a near complete set of value tales books.
I had these books as a kid – they were awesome.
I’ve also sold a set before on ebay I picked up at goodwill.
If you’ve never seen these books, give them a quick search on ebay. They are a BOLO for sure.

My challenge for last month was putting together a BOLO list. I didn’t come up with much. When I’m at auctions or sales, I think about that more often. Right now, I’m really trying to help out my neighbor and get his stuff listed, so my sourcing has been limited.
I did put together a note on the computer specifically for keeping a BOLO list, and it has the few things I thought about. So, I consider that a successful completion of the challenge. From now on, I can add to the list as I think of them.
At the end of last year when we were thinking these through, I was trying to set myself up better for a less time consuming eBay business as my job became a bigger deal. Now my commission with the neighbor has superseded all that, but this work will eventually be worthwhile.
In the meantime, my #8 challenge is to go to a few yard or estate sales. Funny, maybe I’ll add to my BOLO list.

Spreadsheet updated. Well done, Sharyn, a good win this week. JB had an Honorable Mention, being last year’s winner. Link to spreadsheet added, as I haven’t given the link in a while.
Good news on the resolution and good luck on the move, VT.
Sharyn, that’s funny. Himself’s mother seems to have a similar problem, she’s constantly buying him shirts! Fortunately he’s really hard on his clothes, so although she’s still outpacing him, it’s barely! I’m really looking forward to how you fare with your #6 challenge. You’ve set some restrictive parameters there, I think. I shan’t ask you to share your BOLO, but I would love to know how many you come up with!
My #6 is Challenger’s Choice. I choose to continue with any of the months I missed and see if I can catch up.
Wow, VL, that sounds like fantastic fun! Wish I could be there, but I will add it to my bucket list!
We finally have a week where the temps are barely going to hit triple digits. Most of the week is only in the high 90s, so it’s cooler than it has been for weeks! We’re desperate for rain, but the cooler temps mean that more work can be done outdoors. I have some furniture that needs refurb, but I may wait for the thermometer to lower another 10 degrees before I go that far outside! LOL. For now, it means I can spend some time sorting things on my deck.
Wishing you all great listings!

Here’s my challenge #6: 6. Put together BOLO list, items not requiring much testing, easy to pack, decent ROI.
Should be pretty easy. Just put together a list. If I do something with it, who knows?
05/20/2022 at 6:33 am #96363Steven… Thanks (as always) for posting!
Like many here, I haven’t been selling much at all lately but here are some recent sales:Went to an estate sale at a hoarder house that was about to be demolished. It was quite frankly the most disgusting home we had ever gone to! Beyond filthy and smelly with explicit porn mags and videos strewn everywhere. Anyway, by the time we got there it was pretty picked over but i grabbed some good stuff including this Fenton Vase. Sold for $28.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/363791798945This Old Glory ocarina was also from that house. Sold for $20
https://www.ebay.com/itm/363769904122I picked up a large tub of materials from the Paramahansa Yogananda Self Realization organization (cult) for free at a yard sale. A definite BOLO. The magazines are pretty sought after so should sell out fairly quickly. But with $5/gallon gas these days who knows? 😛
Here are some sales from that lot:

Monthly numbers: 04/1 – 04/30
Total listings: 1280
Items sold: 50
Sales: $1,137.70
Highest price sold: $88 and $79- Disneyland Haunted House Model kits
Average price sold: $22.75
Cost of items sold: $155.84 / average cost: 3.11 each
Spent on new inventory: $192.00
Number of items listed: 71
Returns: 1 – Undeliverable to a buyer in India – waiting for the return.Congratulations on one year of Broad Porch Coffee, it is great to hear about your adventures with it each week.
I had several days of no sales in April, but overall I did about the same as last month in total sales. The Haunted House model kits both had boxes in very poor condition, but the models inside had not been assembled. I never knew that such was ever made until I found 2 of them at a flea market for $5 each. These were not models of the house but of scenes inside of the house. I love finding vintage Disney stuff, it always sells for good prices. A good bolo is for Disney View-Master Reel Sets, I’ve sold quite a few of those for good money.
One big note, in June, eBay is changing the promoted listing setup. Apparently, if you have promoted listings, eBay is changing the rules which will let eBay, without your permission, change the ad rates, start new promotions on your listings, and do other things. eBay sent out an email about it which you should have received already and may want to read carefully. The Auction Professor on YouTube released a video on April 30th that covers it at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efkX__Ifc_4.
If you want to change your promoted listings settings, here is a link to do that: https://www.ebay.com/sh/mktg/pl. Scroll down to the box that has “Promoted Listings Standard campaigns” and hover over the “End” column to enter an end date. I added an end date to my settings and in the future, I’ll probably just run campaigns on the whole store for a period of a week or two at only 1%.
01/29/2022 at 5:55 am #94895Here’s a BOLO for you guys:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/265379920843
I could have made more if I pieced it out but when I listed it before Christmas I was just wanting a quick sale for everything. It took a bit longer to sell than I expected, but I got what I wanted for it.

Retro,
I will have to have a BOLO for his live show.

I just got back from my year end trip. Sorry, I did not get this list up earlier.
Many challenges on the list are to help me to focus on items that sell for higher price, but don’t necessarily have as good of an ROI. With my part time job becoming more challenging, I need to change my strategy up a bit. It doesn’t mean I can’t buy real cheap auction lots so that I can find the gems, but I can’t just do that all the time.
1. List as many death pile items as possible
2. Try retail arbitrage, go to a few upscale stores or maybe hang with the SIL
3. Challenger’s choice
4. Try retail arbitrage, try a few online sales (and/or hang with the SIL)
5. Buy 2-4 higher priced items at auction with lower ROI but higher dollars
6. Put together BOLO list, items not requiring much testing, easy to pack, decent ROI
7. Try a new thrift store, maybe go to a few known ones as well
8. Go to a few yard or estate sales
9. Complete eBay store banner & description
10. Challenger’s choice
11. Decide how I should list my old stamp collection, list a few stamps
12. Organize & test electronics -
